Fine Fund: Dan Nole advised that next week would be double up Tuesday as we were not able to conduct the fine program today. Something about IU sticks in my mind also. Do you wonder what this will lead to? See us on the 20th to “fine” out. Ms. Watkins thanked the Exchange Club for our continued and continuous contributions to the area schools in LaPorte County through our gifts in time, resources and talents. Ms. Watkins advised that we have a great deal to be proud of as our area students are doing great and doing a great many things. Ms. Watkins provided an update on the LaPorte County Career Center advising that new facilities have been added and significant improvements made. These improvements include curricula changes that have been aligned with the business needs within our community in an effort to provide opportunities to our community’s youth. Apprenticeship fairs, “Made in LaPorte County” fairs and Career Expos all provide an opportunity for the people, and our youth, of LaPorte County to learn about the opportunities available here is our communities. Further, these programs identify the training and educational requirements needed to assure an opportunity for success. Wherever possible the center provides the opportunity for a “hands on” experience so that students learn what will be required of them as they move from school into careers. Ms. Watkins reiterated the continuing efforts to work within the business community, especially within manufacturing, to be certain that courses are developed, or modified, to support their needs going forward noting, however, that collegiate level education is becoming increasingly important to area employers. To that end Ms. Watkins continues to work with PNC and Ivy Tech to develop credit courses in the high school curricula that will enable our students to secure that education in a less costly manner. Hats off to you Ms. Watkins! Thank you for your commitment to our community.
