The above data emphasizes a need for The School District of Palm Beach County to continue providing positive literacy opportunities for students in middle schools. The proposed program will assist with meeting the District’s literacy goals. PROGRAM The Middle School Book Club proposal, funded by author James Patterson, supports building a positive attitude towards reading, developing habits of reading for pleasure, and will instill a love of books in students. This proposal would support implementation of a book club in grades 6-8 at three middle schools. This proposal will provide monies to hire instructional staff to facilitate the Book Club. The Book Club will include an area that will house books specifically purchased or donated for this program, a consistent time during the week when the area will be available for students to visit, choose books, sit and read quietly, and receive assistance from the leader to support the reading needs and goals of the students. The instructional staff member chosen to lead the book club would have knowledge of successful reading strategies, know how to encourage and support students in reading, and experience with struggling readers.

The instructional staff member would support the project by: 1. Creating an organized, nurturing and comfortable environment for students to visit 2. Maintaining a record of students who attend the book club 3. Collecting student logs 4. Administering a pre and post survey 5. Providing assistance to students as needed 6. Conferring with students to monitor their success at reaching their reading goals 7. Creating activities that gets students excited and engages them in reading

Students will be provided with a book selection appropriate to their age level, interests, and reading ability. Books will be purchased to ensure that there is a selection at various reading levels and titles that interest middle school students, especially minority males. Schools will receive an additional 200 books for the Book Club room.

OBJECTIVES 1. 2. 3. 4.

To develop a love for literacy in students, especially minority males in middle school To instill positive habits in reading such as reading for pleasure To increase and/or maintain students’ reading proficiency throughout the school year To provide support to students with reading deficiencies and/or needs

EVALUATION AND MEASURABLE OUTCOMES The project will be evaluated by the following outcome measures: 1. Each school will administer a pre and post survey to measure students’ attitudes about reading. 2. Each school will keep attendance records to determine number of students utilizing the “Book Club” room and activities. 3. Each school will utilize student logs to record the number of books read throughout the school year.
