Nelson Azevedo Jobim Minister of Defense of Brazil

Nelson Azevedo Jobim was born on April 12, 1946 in the city of Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul. He is the son of Hélvio Jobim and Namy Azevedo Jobim. Jobim graduated with a degree in Social and Legal Sciences from the Law School of the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, in Porto Alegre city in 1968. Upon graduation, Jobim dedicated himself to the practice of law. Between 1985 and 1986 he was President of the regional section of the Ordem dos Abogados do Brasil (equivalent to The American Bar Association) in Santa Maria. He also served as Vice-President of the Rio Grande do Sul state section of the Ordem dos Abogados do Brasil. He was also a member of the Institute of Lawyers of Rio Grande do Sul and of the Institute of Brazilian Lawyers, hosted in Rio de Janeiro. Jobim practiced law from 1969 until 1994. Jobim was an assistant professor in the Law department of the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria in the subjects of “Civil Procedural Law”, “Introduction to the Law” and “Introduction to the Philosophy of Law”. He was also a professor in the Escola Superior de Magistratura da Associação dos Juízes of Rio Grande do Sul, where he taught “Civil Procedural Law,” “Introduction to Law” and “Philosophy of Law” from 1980 to 1986. In addition, he taught at the Escola Superior do Ministério Público, which is part of the Association of the Public Department of Rio Grande do Sul, until 1986. In the political realm, he served as Federal Representative from Rio Grande do Sul from 1987 to 1991, and was re-elected to serve from 1991 to 1995. He served as spokesman for the Commission of Restructuration on the Chamber of Representatives in 1991 and as spokesman to the Special Commission Related to the denunciation against the President of the Republic, Fernando Collor of Mello, for crimes of irresponsibility in 1992. He also served as spokesman for the revision of the Constitution from 1993 to1994. Nelson Jobim was Minister of the Justice Department during the government of the president Fernando Henrique Cardoso, from January 1st, 1995 to April 7, 1997. He was nominated by decree to serve as Minister of the Supreme Federal Court, after a vacancy resulting from the retirement of the minister Francisco Rezek. He was elected as Vice President of the Supreme Federal Court on April 9, 2003, and took office on June 5th of that year.

In May 19, 2004, he was chosen as President of the Supreme Federal Court. He assumed the presidency of the court in a solemn session carried out on June 3, 2004 and served in that position until 2006. Jobim assumed the position of Defense Minister, formally receiving the charge of his predecessor, Waldir Saucer, in 2007.
