THE MARK OF ATHENA BY LEANNA BAI Action, creativity, fantasy, and a tint of laughs are all in the new book by Rick Riordan: The Mark of Athena. It was released last year on October 2, 2012. This is the third novel of The Heroes of Olympus series, following the second book The Son of Neptune. If you read the second book, this book will proceed directly from when they are on the Argo II, the ship they built to meet the Romans at their Camp Jupiter. The passengers are the seven demigods: Jason, Piper, Leo, Percy, Hazel, Frank, and Annabeth. Their mission is to find the Athena Parthenos, prevent evil Gaea from ruling the world by closing the Doors of Death in the underworld, and to fulfill this prophecy: Wisdom's daughter walks alone, The Mark of Athena burns through Rome, Twins snuff out the angel's breath, Who holds the key to endless death. Giants' bane stands gold and pale, Won through pain from a woven jail.

Their only supplies are the ship and their minds, but now they only have their minds. At the end of the book, Percy and Annabeth fall into Tartarus and have to close the Doors of Death from there. The rest of the crew will have to go to the underground temple of Epirus, Greece to meet them. I recommend this book for 3-5th graders. It is outstanding with exciting events! The fourth book in the series: The House of Hades is coming out October 8, 2013.

! WEST UNIVERSITY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL VOL. XIII ISSUE VI ! BULLYING BY SAVANNAH FARMER Bullying is a huge problem because every day, thousands of kids wake up afraid to go to school. Even if we may not see it, bullying happens all the time in schools, on playgrounds, and in our own backyard. Bullying occurs when a person is picked on over and over again by an individual or group with more power, either in terms of physical strength or social standing. It may be as obvious as tripping or shoving a person who is perceived as weak, or as subtle as spreading rumors or making jokes at the expense of another. Bullying can also be by text message

or online. The end result is the same: making another person feel isolated and alone. Bullies can be boys or girls, but they often have the same characteristics. For instance, they like to dominate others and think that they are somehow better than their victims. Bullies like to pick on people who are smaller or shy so they can overpower them. Some bullies may feel the need to dominate because they are bullied at home. Others may simply be copying their friends and trying to fit in themselves. Whatever the reason, there is no justification for bullying. There are things that you should do if you feel like you are being bullied. You should not let the bully know that your feelings are hurt.

MARCH 2013

Never get physical. Remain calm and tell the bully to stop. If you are able to laugh it off, this will often throw the bully off. You should ignore the bully and walk away. Talk to an adult you can trust to try to figure out the best way to deal with the bully. No one has the right to be mean to another person. You can't control other people's actions, but you can stay true to yourself. If you see a person being bullied by another, even by a friend, do not remain quiet and allow it to go on. Speak up. Tell the bully to stop. Tell a teacher or parent. Bullying is never okay.

Explain to your friends that you don’t like being teased, and ask them how they would feel in your shoes. If the teasing continues, consider doing your knitting at home when they aren’t around, or seek support from friends or teachers who share your hobby. --NPFH

Make sure you come back to your friend cool. Remember don’t be the bully! Try to fix problems and if you see someone getting bullied, report to a adult. At recess I see tag problems like who to be it or tagging people too hard. Remember a nice thing to do is volunteer to be it. ST. PATRICK CONT’D FROM P1

His parents named him Patrick. Adrienne’s family shared with me that Irish immigrants brought St. Patrick’s Day to the United States. New York and Chicago and celebrate it with parades. Restaurants around Houston have parties. The Grimes family has a party with Irish dishes such as soda bread and corned beef as well as lots of other food. They make green decorations and their guests dress in green flowers, and wear beads and pretend shamrock tattoos. Her father thinks it is cool that people all over the world have a party for his birthday! Ireland is called the Emerald Isle, and some people think that that may be why the color green is associated with St. Patrick’s Day. Another explanation is that the holiday occurs in springtime when everything is green. As for the other symbols, shamrocks came to be associated with St. Patrick because he used the three-sectioned leaves to explain the Holy Trinity. Leprechauns and pots of gold came from regular Irish fairy tales. St. Patrick’s Day is a widely celebrated holiday with a very interesting history. Just remember to wear green on March 17, or you’ll get pinched! SOURCE: http://www.theholidayspot.com/patrick/historyofpatrick.htm

MATH NIGHT CONT’D FROM PAGE 1 pegs that were hidden from the second player. The second player then had to crack the code by guessing which colored pegs went where. Some of you may have a game like this at home called Mastermind. Other games there were Silver and Gold, Jack Sparrow’s Magic Wheel and Fish Market. The highlight of the night, though, was the Walk the Plank game. It took place on the stage in front of a giant pirate ship created by art students from Pershing Middle School. To play this game, two players are required. One player stands at the top of the stage while the other player shows math flashcards to player one. For each incorrect answer you have to move down the plank one space. The object of the game is to answer enough questions correctly without walking off the end of the plank. In addition to the games there was a π recitation station where kids showed off their memorization skills. There was also a fun photo booth where you could pose for silly photos with your friends. Kirk Waller, a 4th grade student, attended the event and said, “The prizes and games were really fun and exciting.” Carson Nicodemus, another 4th grade student, said, “My favorite game of the night was the estimation game, Guess the Treasure.” If you worked up a pirate sized appetite you could purchase a Jack Sparrow Meal that included a choice of pizza or Chickfil-a nuggets, chips, dessert and water. All for the bargain price of $5! Another option was Chilango’s Gourmet Taco Truck parked right outside the MPR. Food trucks are very popular in Houston and it was fun to have one at this event. Math Night was a swash-buckling success. As it turns out, the third graders won the contest for the grade level with the most in attendance. All had a great time. Everyone left with his or her math skills in ship shape order and no one ended up going off the end of the plank!

MARCH 2013

Before announcing the ranking of the books, Mrs. Russell, our school librarian, gave special recognition to students who had read all 20 Bluebonnet books and passed all the AR tests. From WUES, 532 ballots were submitted to the Texas Library Association by Mrs. Russell. Out of the total votes, 191 were from 3rd graders, 194 were from 4th graders, and 147 were from 5th graders. Did you vote? If so, what book did you vote for? Did you vote for the winner? The book with the most votes at our school was Escape Under the Forever Sky by Eve Yohalem with 154 votes or 28.9%. The 1st runner up was Hero by Mike Lupica with 83 votes or 15.6%, and the 2nd runner up was Zita the Spacegirl by Ben Hatke with 50 votes or 9.4%. Misty Gordon and the Ghost Pirates and Wonderstruck were both also close to becoming the 2nd runner up. Many of my friends and I voted for Escape Under the Forever Sky because the book was suspenseful, fun, exciting, and it was set in Africa. It’s about a girl, whose mom is the American ambassador in Ethiopia. When the girl gets kidnapped, she has to rely on her instincts and knowledge to survive. If you haven’t read it,I also recommendWUES’s top Bluebonnet pick, Escape Under the Forever Sky. The official winner of the 2012-2013 Texas Bluebonnet Award was announced on February 8, after all the votes were counted. Can you guess how many students voted? According to the Texas Library Association, 173,836 students voted from 1,623 schools in Texas this year. Unlike at our school, the statewide voting was very close. None of the books even received 10% of the votes. The top three books were: •1st place: Postcards from Camp by Simms Taback with 15,189 votes (8.74% of the votes were for this book) •2nd place: Zita the Spacegirl by Ben Hatke with 14,612 votes (8.41% of the votes were for this book) •3rd place: Just Being Audrey by Margaret Cardillo with 12,568 votes (7.23% of the votes were for this book).

Sadly, the author of the winning book, Simms Taback, died on Christmas Day 2011. His book Postcards from Camp is about a boy named Michael who goes to camp for the first time and does not like it so he writes a series of postcards and letters pleading to be rescued. This book is unique and interesting because it has handmade postcards and letters that the reader can take out of their envelopes to read. THE HOBBIT BY MERIDIAN MONTHY

Do you like action and adventure? Fun and fantasy? Then The Hobbit is the movie for you. This movie is also connected to the book The Hobbit. This amazing fairy tale is about a hobbit, a hairy, short creature, who is not the type of person that goes on wild journeys to find gold and treasure. He had planned to stay home in The Shire and live his life like a normal hobbit when Gandalf, a wizard, comes. He asks the hobbit named Bilbo Baggins to join him on an adventure.

Do you think he will go? And if he does, survive? They are making it into three movies, so don’t wait to go see the first one! If you want to be courageous like Bilbo and Gandalf, you can read the book for more detail and fun and you won’t have to wait! The actors and special effects are amazing and you really feel like you’re in the movie. The movie is good and covers everything in the book plus they added a little in to make it longer. I give it a five star rating.*****
