Music Overview

The String Family

This video exploration of the world of music introduces viewers to a range of musical concepts including rhythm, melody, harmony and syncopation. Along the way students will be introduced to Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Gershwin, Ellington, and the Beatles, and will learn about various styles of music from folk to jazz. Across-the-curriculum activities included in the expanded Teacher’s Guide are tied to National Music Standards and are designed to extend the video’s educational value.

The string family comes to life as students learn about the violin, viola, cello, and double bass, and see how they work. (The guitar, harp, and fiddle are also covered.) Students will be introduced to the greatest of all violin makers, Antonio Stradivari, and the brilliant composer and violinist Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, among others.
