NEW RECORD OF A XANTHID, PILUMNOPEUS CONVEXUS (MACCAGNO 1936) WITH A NOTE ON ITS ECOLOGY Naseem Ghani & P. J. F. Davie 1 Marine Reference Collection & Resource Centre, University of Karachi, Karachi-75270, Pakistan 1 Queensland Museum, P. 0 Box 300, South Brisbane, Queensland 4101 , Australia Abstract The species l)ilumnnpeus convexus (Maccagno 1936) is a new record !rom northem Arabian occUJTence has been extended eastwards. Earlier tile species was recorded Sea, and ils ran ge from man groves and sand y beach, thi s record is from ti1e rocky shores of Manora and Bulleji (Kara chi , Pakistan).

Introduction The spL:cies under stud y was considered to be Heteropanope glabra (Stimpson 1858), but a close examination revealed that it is a different one and could be Jli/umnopeus convexus (Maccagno 1936). Cooper (1997) has recorded this species from mangroves and a sandy beach of northeastern coastal islands of Abu-Dhabi (Persian Gulf) . The present material is from the rocky shores of Manora and Bulleji (northern Arabian Sea) and to date this species is not recorded from the sandy as well as from the mangrove areas of this region . The crabs of mangroves in this area arc with two xanthids only, one is Heteropanope glabra (Stimpson 1858) and the other Eurycarcinus orienta/is (Milnc-Edwards 1867), the present record has extended the distribution of this species further eastward s. Description: The species is of small size, covered with fine granules and tufts of thick plumose setae. The carapace (Fig. IA) is little broader than long being 3:4 mm, the regions arc ill defined, the lateral bord~.:rs (Fig. 1B) of carapace arc finely denticulated. The anterio-lateral border is cut into four prominent tcetll , the first one forms the outer angle of the orbit, it is concave in the middle, the second one is larger, the third one is subequal to the second, while fourth is smaller. Second, third and fourth teeth are pointing anteriorly, the granules on the dorsal surface of the carapace are evenly distributed. The front is broad, divided into two by a median notch, the ventral inner orbital angle is a weak tooth-like structure. The front is with a tooth on inner orbital angle, the orbital margin is findy denticulate on the dorsal margin whik the inner · orbital margi n is with prominent denticles (Fig. I C). The ventral surrace of crab, specially th e pterygostomian region is granular and provided with sparce thickly plumose setae. The
