New records of ptyctimous mites (Acari: Oribatida) from the Nearctic Region Wojciech Niedba»a Department of Animal Taxonomy and Ecology, Adam Mickiewicz University, Umultowska 89, 61-614 Pozna½, Poland (e-mail: [email protected])

Abstract—New records of the ptyctimous mites from the Nearctic Region are given. The new material includes 27 species of ptyctimous mites. The geographical distributions of seven species are more extensive than previously known. Niedba»a 590

Introduction Knowledge of species in the oribatid taxa Protoplophoridae, Mesoplophoridae, Phthiracaroidea, and Euphthiracaroidea, i.e., ptyctimous mites of the Nearctic Region, has been summarized in my monograph (Niedba»a 2002). This paper is a further contribution to the knowledge of these mites. It includes new locality records for 27 species in the Nearctic Region.

Methods and material One specimen is in the collection of the Department of Invertebrates, Institute of Systematics and Evolution of Animals, Polish Academy of Sciences, Kraków, Poland (designated DI below); all others are registered in the Canadian National Collection of Insects, Arachnids and Nematodes, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

species are expanded. Oribotritia megale was previously known only from California but is now reported from Oregon; its updated distribution shows it to be restricted to two western states of the Nearctic Region. For Prototritia canadaris the new locality from Oregon is the most westerly; this species occurs mainly in the northern and eastern Nearctic Region with southern and western disjunctions. For Euphthiracarus cernuus the new locality from Nova Scotia is the most easterly; the species’ updated distribution is mainly western Nearctic with a disjunct distribution in the East. For Euphthiracarus depressculus the new localities from British Columbia, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia represent the most northerly records. Acrotritia parareticulata has been hitherto known only from Ontario; the locality from Nova Scotia is the most easterly record. For Microtritia minima the four new localities from British Columbia and two from Oregon are the most westerly records; its updated distribution is disjunct, as it is known from the northeastern and northwestern Nearctic. Phthiracarus pygmaeus was formerly thought to be pantropical, but the new locality in Oregon is a northern disjunction.

Acknowledgements Discussion The material was collected from 65 localities in different areas of the Nearctic Region. Twenty-seven species were found (Table 1). For the majority of the species the new localities fall within the previously known ranges (Niedba»a 2002). However, on the basis of these new data, the zoogeographical limits of seven
