Mika - The Origin Of Love

P

op singer Mika released the third single from his third album The Origin Of Love on the 3rd December 2012 and the song of the same name looks set to equal the success of his past releases. Having achieved the rare feat of debuting in every top ten list on iTunes around the world with his previous album, The Boy Who Knew Too Much, The Origin Of Love was produced not just by Mika himself, but also Benny Benassi, Greg Wells (who has worked with Adele and Katy Perry), Dan Wilson, and Klas Åhlund. Other people who have contributed to the creation of this album include William Orbit, Pharrell Williams and Nick Littlemore (who worked together on the record’s lead single ‘Celebrate’) and Fryars, just one of the unsigned musicians Mika discovered on the internet and then tracked down. The album took around two years to create from start to finish, having been recorded in various places around the world including London, Sweden, Montreal, and Miami. The album has also tasted success in a variety of places; not only did a song from the writing sessions, ‘Gang Bang’, become a track for Madonna’s latest album MDNA, with the Queen Of Pop herself hailing it as her favourite song on the album, but also the bonus track ‘Elle Me Dit’, was released as a single and reached number one in the French Singles Chart (the

English version of ‘Elle Me Dit’ appears on the album as the track ‘Emily’). The song ‘The Origin Of Love’ is not a departure from the dancey, summery, and quirky tracks we’ve come to expect from Mika. In several places it sounds tremendously reminiscent of a song that Queen could have made. It’s cheery and happy, a celebration of love with lyrics that start off deceptively clichéd, but then surprise you halfway through with a unique insight and interpretation on the story of Adam and Eve (go and listen to the song to hear it; one won’t spoil the surprise here!) However, what is even more unexpected is the rather explicit nature of the accompanying music video; perhaps not the best visual treat to go with a song that otherwise could have been no different from Mika’s first-impression of a bubbly and “family-friendly” sound and style. Mika has sold over a huge eight million records achieving gold and platinum awards in 32 countries. His first two albums, Life In Cartoon Motion and The Boy Who Knew Too Much were awarded Brit Awards and MTV Awards. It’s safe to say that Mika’s own success story will continue for a long time yet, not least because the happy sound of his new song could have been suited to both the status of a sunny summer anthem, or, as it is, a cheery precipitation to the joy and euphoria of the recent Christmas period.

RACHEL JONES KEEPS US UP TO DATE WITH NEW SINGLE RELEASES.

N

abiha is a singer-songwriter from Denmark, who has been enjoying success in her home country for some time. She has already achieved gold status, and it is there that she has had five consecutive top ten singles so far, one of which, ‘Raise The Roof’, was a collaboration with Pitbull and Fatman Scoop. And as we begin the first chapter of 2013, Nabiha will be starting her own new chapter as she brings her music to the United Kingdom. Her first UK single, ‘Never Played The Bass’, uses the lyrics from the song ‘Teardrops’ by Womack & Womack - “The music don’t feel it like it did / When I felt it with you…”, however, the rest of the track is very much a personal effort as Nabiha co-wrote the song as well as countless others already in her back catalogue. ‘Never Played The Bass’ has already reached number two on the UK Urban Chart, and number three on the UK Club Chart. In a feat only achieved twice before by Madonna and Usher, the song has also reached number one on the Domestic Airplay Chart in Denmark and number three on the Overall Airplay Chart. With two hit albums in Denmark already under her belt - Cracks in 2010 and More Cracks in 2011, Nabiha is already working on a new album. ‘Never Played The Bass’ is a catchy, friendly tune, a real floor filler if there ever was one. Its brassy, warm, and energetic call to party is a welcome antidote to the cold winter months and will surely take Nabiha, whose name means “noble” to heights that match those she’s already conquered back home in Denmark.
