USDA 14 JANUARY WASDE (World Agriculture Supply & Demand), GRAIN STOCKS & WHEAT SEEDING REPORTS SLIGHTLY BULLISH CORN, NEUTRAL SOYBEANS AND BEARISH WHEAT! On January 10th, 2014 the USDA released the final production, disappearance, supply and demand numbers for the 13/14 marketing year and pre-report estimates were looking for higher ending stocks on corn, unchanged on soys and lower on wheat. Please see chart below for a quick highlight and summary. The latest USDA 2014 January WASDE report will be seen as bullish corn, neutral

US cargoes of corn and DDG’s on GMO issues and this has weighed on the markets. However, for the year, export sales are running about 218 million bushels ahead of the seasonal pace to meet the current USDA projections. Global ending stocks were lowered compared to expectations on a smaller than expected 13/14 US corn crop. The initial knee jerk reaction by nearby futures was to close up $0.206/bushel on the day after hitting a new intraday low at $4.062/bushel. We have since fallen $0.052/bushel trying to find a bottom. On the charts support comes in at

soybeans and bearish wheat. The surprise was not in the Grain Stocks report (which usually causes markets to move limit up or down), but it was in the final 2014 January WASDE report corn estimates that surprised the markets with lower average yields and ending stocks number.

$4.25/bushel with resistance at $4.40 $4.50/bushel. Hot, dry weather in Argentina will need to be monitored as a majority of the corn crop is in the pollination stage and yields could see an adverse effect but rains did fall and was expected to continue for the week ending January 20th, 2014.

CORN USDA forecast 13/14 corn ending stocks down 159 million bushels less than last month, and 229 million bushels less than expectations. The USDA increased feed by 100 million bushels on higher record hog and cattle weights. Ethanol usage was also increased by 50 million bushels to 5 billion bushels on increased production, caused by very healthy margins. Exports were left unchanged and China has since canceled

SOYBEANS USDA forecast 13/14 soybean ending stocks at 150 million bushels unchanged vs. last month and slightly lower than expectations at 152 million bushels. US 13/14 soybean production is estimated at 3.289 billion bushels, up 31 million bushels based on increased yields at 43.3 bpa vs. last month at 43 bpa and harvested area. Soybean exports are increased 20 million bushels to 1.495 billion reflecting

record shipments during the first quarter of the marketing year and strong sales through December. The Brazil soybean crop projection is raised 1.0 million tons to a record 89.0 million and some analyst are forecasting 95 mmt as weather has been ideal. Global oilseed ending stocks are projected at 85.1 million tons, up 2.3 million from last month on increased soybean stocks in Argentina and Brazil and increased canola stocks in Canada. On the charts, resistance comes in at $13.50/bushel for nearby futures with support at $12.50 - $12.60/bushel. Soybean futures have been supported by robust domestic and international demand fundamentals (China literally buying a cargo of US soybeans since the beginning of the year) but will this trend continue and when will the cancellations come? A weather premium has been built in for new crop soybean futures over the last week as forecasts for Argentina have become hotter and drier but as of this writing rain has fallen and futures have fallen $0.20/bushel after testing the $11.29/ bushel level. NOPA reported the highest ever crush total for any month during December at 165.384 million bushels, which was higher than expectations by about 1.5 million bushels.

WHEAT USDA forecast 13/14 US all wheat carryout at 608 million bushels which was a surprise and much higher than expectations at 540 million bushels. The USDA lowered feed usage by 60 million

,while increasing exports by 25 million bushels. The wheat market was also surprised when the USDA reported that the US farmer had planted 2 million less acres into SRW in the US. Global 2013/14 wheat supplies were raised 1.5 million tons to 888.8 million and the combination of higher domestic and global wheat supplies were enough to send futures to new contract lows with nearby Chicago futures trading at $5.604/bushel. Export demand has since picked up as prices have fallen ,but it has not been enough to cause the managed money crowd who are record short some 56,482 contracts to cover and start a “short covering” rally. We need more consecutive higher closes for this to happen. The 2014/15 winter wheat that is in the ground around the world has had its best start in 8 years, but the recent “Polar Vortex” in the month of January 2014 may have done some winter kill damage in the Northern US Plains such as Nebraska, with very limited snow cover. We will not know for weeks how much damage was done. Look for a potential rally in the coming months for any weather or production issues in the Ukraine, Russia or China as this is when they are experiencing the summer weather effects as we do here in the months of July and August.
