Not one photographer in New York—City and State-entered the winners' circle. Of the top prizes, Californians won twr and an Oregonian the other. Of 20 honor award winners in that group, 13 were from west of the Mississippi There must be some moral there for eastern amateurs. And perhaps the hint on your own work is- contained In two observations from the judges' report. Of the non-professional entries
E ARE writing as few words as possible today to leave as much space as possible for some of the 73 prize-winners in the annual Graflex contest. The Craflex contest is a photographic event in any year. It invariably draws entries from all over the U. S. A. The entries usually are a good sampling oi the best in American photography. This year the competitor: in black - and - white photography were divided among three groups -professionals, non-professionals and amateurs. There also was a color group. The managers of the contest lost count of the. number of prints entered. But, they said, stacked one on top of the othei they would be taller than a four story building. What impressed me m the pro fessional class was how news papermen dominated that com petition. All three of the top

the judges said: "A great many mediocre pictures were submitted. . . . Technically, they showed little thought or imagina ban, . . . Too many were bad imitations of 'copybook* subjects. The titles were often better than the photographs, indicating that the photographer's idea was a good one though he did not sue ceed in conveying it effec tively. . . ." Of the color entries: ". . . An acute shortage of good materia) . . . looked as though the photog raphers were unfamiliar with, and in many cases afraid, of the medium in which they were working. Many pictures showed no feeling for the use of color.*
