Rector’s Journal There are two inland seas in the Holy Land. One is fresh, and fish live in its waters. Trees spread their branches over it and birds nest in the trees. Along its shores the children play. The River Jordan makes this sea with sparkling water from the hills, and every kind of life is happier because it is there. The River Jordan also flows south to another inland sea. Here, there is no splash of fish, no fluttering leaf, no children’s laughter. No towns are found on its shores, which are rocky and hard. It is a desolate place. What makes the difference in

these neighboring seas? Not the River Jordan. Not the soil or the country around it. The difference is this. The Sea of Galilee receives but does not keep the River Jordan. It gives from what it receives so that life may abound. The other sea is shrewder, hoarding its income jealously. It will not be tempted into any generous impulse. It swallows up and keeps every drop of the Jordan that it receives. The Sea of Galilee gives and lives. The other sea gives nothing. It is named the Dead Sea. It is my prayer that we are becoming “Sea of Galilee People.” Being created in the image of God,

we are created to be generous, as God is generous. Part of our generosity is giving our time, talent and treasure for the work of Christ at St. Paul’s. With your generosity life will thrive, ministry will abound - and you will be fulfilling God’s purposes for you. Please prayerfully consider your pledge to this ministry this month by filling out the pledge request that you will be receiving in the coming days. It is our hope that you will place your pledge in the offering plate on Sunday, November 12. Father Glenn +

Blessing of the Animals

Thanks to Susan Stephen for the pictures!

Despite the rain, about 15 people and their animals—or in some cases representations of their animals—showed up for the Blessing of the Animals service Oct. 7. During the brief service, Father Glenn blessed the pets and the people rededicated themselves to being good pet owners. The service was held in honor of St. Francis of Assisi, who became known as the patron saint of animals and the natural environment.

Glenn as the 21st Rector of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. This should be a lively service with special music from our wonderful choir. The Right Rev. Matt Gunter will preside. A festive luncheon will also be provided immediately after the service.

All Saints Sunday November 5 It has long been the practice of the church to observe a special time for those saints who have gone before us. This is a time of remembrance as we remember their lives - and celebration as we celebrate their entrance into new and larger life. If there are people who you would like added to our prayers for that Sunday, please call the office by 10 a.m. Thursday.

November Baby supplies are welcome as are cash donations. Fill the Basket Sunday is the third Sunday of the month. Thank you Scent Sensitivity We all enjoy coming to church on Sundays presenting our best selves. This includes dressing neatly and, for some of us, wearing perfumes or body sprays. Unfortunately, some of our brothers and sisters have allergies and even strong medical reactions to such scents. So please be sensitive to others’ physical conditions when you come to church.

Financial update on loan In 2002, a large, handicapped accessible building addition containing a narthex, classrooms and a garth was constructed at St. Paul’s. We have been paying off the business loan of this wonderful addition since then. The original loan was for $718,000. Currently, we are paying $1,100 a

month, and we have a remaining balance of $87,250.72. We will be refinancing this loan in the coming weeks. Interestingly, the trustees of the diocese have offered to refinance our loan from an existing diocesan revolving fund. Our Vestry will decide the best course of action.

Joint Service with Grace

Ring the bells for the Salvation Army Dec. 9 Most people are familiar with the red kettles and hear those bells ringing at locations throughout Marinette and Menominee. The funds raised during November and December stay in our community to assist families with: * Utility disconnects * Rent with eviction notices * Food pantry * Hot nutritious meals * Warm clothing give-a-way * Christmas gifts, toys, and food

* School supplies and clothing * Camps for all ages * Visits and Gifts to Nursing Home Residents * Neighborhood Youth Center * And more St. Paul’s will be taking Saturday, Dec. 9 to ring bells at Jack’s in Menominee between 9 am and 6 pm. Look for the sign up sheet in the Parish Hall.

Call to serve Per the ECW by-laws, Gail Wright and Bonnie Chartier will be completing their terms as ECW treasurer and ECW president on Dec. 31, 2017. This is the perfect opportunity for any woman in the congregation to become involved in the fundraisers and activities of the ECW. These positions are essential in keeping the ECW functioning as it has in the past. Job descriptions are in the ECW by-laws which are posted on the bulletin board at the church or talk to Gail or Bonnie about

Buildings & Grounds Thanks to all who came to help with our Fall Clean-up – the grounds and the interior of the church are looking great and ready for winter! You will also notice that the floors of the Parish Hall and hallways have been cleaned and buffed. It looks like Greg will no longer be able to be our Sexton because of health concerns. We are in the process of hiring a new Sexton.

We are very excited to join Grace Episcopal Church for a Eucharistic service at Great Lakes Memorial Marina Park in Menominee on Sunday, Nov. 19 at 10 a.m. We will come together in a HEATED tent (by the band shell on the waterfront) provided by the city of Menominee and the Old World Christmas Market. The community is invited. There will be a joint choir as well as some alternative guitar music with a generous amount of time after the service to have coffee and goodies together. This promises to be a wonderful time do something a little different, get out in the community and to see old friends and make new ones. After we are done with the tent, the Spies Public Library will be holding a story-time session and handing out free books for kids. Later a children’s movie will be shown. This is all part of Menominee’s Holiday Open House weekend which kicks off Friday with a parade and the official lighting of the city’s Christmas tree.
