Biogeography of the Genus Sansevieria

I
n issue 36, Webb and Newton (2017) presented the biogeography of the genus Sansevieria with an extensive discussion of what they accepted to be the current species as well as names that are problematical but are occasionally still used in the trade and by collectors. Two important tables were supposed to be part of that article but were inadvertently left out during the production process. Here we present those tables with updates from recent work (including this issue). In Table 1, we list 78 species that we consider to be accepted names for sansevierias (not including subspecies or varieties). These include six new species given in Forrest (2017), McCoy and Lavranos (2017), Webb and Myklebust (this volume), and Webb and Newton (this volume) that add to the 72 species in the original list that was supposed to be included in Webb and Newton (2017). In Table 2, we present 67 names that are not accepted, including some familiar (e.g., Sansevieria guineensis) and some not (e.g., Sansevieria stenophylla), that are not accepted for one of three reasons according to the International Code of Nomenclature for Algae, Fungi, and Plants (http://iapt-taxon.org/nomen/main. php). Readers are referred to Webb and Newton (2017) to more explanation of these two tables as well as maps that depict the biogeography of most of the species of the genus Sansevieria.
