The answer was simple, “If you build it, they will come.” What they built was the Woodstock Opera House, to house the library, council room, justice court, fire department, and second floor auditorium for the City of Woodstock. At least 1,000 of these often-elaborate opera houses dotted the state in 1900. Today only seven remain, outside of Chicago. Woodstock’s own opera house was in danger of being torn down at one point to make room for a parking structure. Fortunately, fate intervened and this magnificent building provided a venue for some of the most famous names in show business to hone their skills, Paul Newman, Tom Bosley, Betsy Palmer, Geraldine Page, Shelley Berman, and Lois Nettleton. We’ll take a close look at these folks, both on and off screen, and the importance that The Woodstock Opera House played in shaping them and their lives. Journeys of the Plankton Andy Kough Countless tiny living things float and drift in the world’s oceans and other bodies of water. These living things, or organisms, are known as plankton. They include plants, animals, and other kinds of organisms. They provide a crucial source of food to many large aquatic organisms, such as fish and whales. You’ll hear about breakthroughs and technologies during the past decade that have enabled marine biologists to better study the small and often transparent larvae as they disperse through the waters. Modern approaches often involve bringing the laboratory directly into the ocean to observe behavior in the wild while removing the veil that has long obscured our views of this critical, but cryptic life stage. The Gangster and the Goddess Glynnis Walker Mob enforcer Johnny Stompanato was born in Woodstock, Illinois on October 10, 1925. Thirty-three years later he was back, buried in a cheap coffin purchased by his employer, Los Angeles mob boss, Mickey Cohen. He had been murdered, but by whom and why? The official inquest ruled that fourteen-year old Cheryl Crane, the daughter of movie star Lana Turner, had stabbed Johnny in an effort to protect her mother because he threatened to cut up the star’s face. That was the official story. But what was the real story? Why were there no fingerprints on the knife? Why was the kitchen knife, purchased by Lana Turner the day before, in the bedside table? Why was there no blood at the scene in the Beverly Hills house? Why was Cheryl never allowed to testify? All of these questions lead to the biggest question of all, What really happened on that April night in 1958? Join us to investigate the possible answers to these questions and more, about a murder that was covered up but never solved. Famous Women Suffragists in Illinois Jean Schultz-Angel Prior to 1920, American women were not enfranchised to vote in the majority of elections in the United States. There were various assumptions made by society about women’s voting rights including: they were not educated enough to vote, they would only vote as their husbands did, or that they were uninterested in politics. Near the end of the nineteenth century, reversing the flow of the Chicago River became a matter of survival for the city and its residents. Connected to the Great Lakes system, the Chicago River had easy waterway access to the expanding American West, but it also had a flat topography and poor drainage. Lake Michigan served as both water supply and sewage repository. The Chicago River became overwhelmed with the commerce of a port city and its residents’ sewage. Deadly, waterborne diseases were spreading, the river stank, and flooding from the interior tore through the city to get to the lake. What to do? The decision was made to breach a subcontinental divide, send the sewage away, and save the lake. In 1900,the largest municipal earthmoving project of its time, the flow of the Chicago River was turned away from Lake Michigan. Despite many obstacles, sheer determination made it work. The presenter, Richard Lanyon, is the former executive director of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago. The beginnings of America included a great struggle between those who supported and those who opposed slavery. From the 1820’s through the beginning of the Civil War in 1861, 2,600 to 4,500 freedom seekers, also known as fugitive or runaway slaves, passed through Northern Illinois. The networks of assistance that developed came to be called the Underground Railroad. Some of this happened in connection with communities and farms in McHenry and Lake Counties. We’ll look at what happened at national, state, and regional levels to understand the context for these local experiences. George Rogers Clark and the West: Establishing the Mississippi River as the Western Boundary for the United States Steve Schneider The importance of the territorial provisions contained in the Paris Peace Treaty of 1783, which ended the American Revolutionary War, and specifically, the treaty’s demarcation of a western border at the Mississippi River, should not be understated. These treaty provisions provided the United States with a claim to land that now comprises roughly one-half of its current continental domain. This land mass and the flow of settlers provided the basis for further expansion and the extraordinary development of the country. From military exploits to diplomatic relations, we’ll explore who and/or what was responsible for the treaty’s western border, plus the stories to justify those decision. MCHENRY COUNTY COLLEGE CONFERENCE CENTER PRESENTS: BARRY BRADFORD, NATIONAL AWARD WINNING STORYTELLER, HISTORIAN AND TEACHER

HAMILTON: THE MAN, MIRANDA, AND THE MUSICAL Wednesday, October 4, 2017 12:30–2 p.m. and 7–8:30 p.m. McHenry County College Luecht Conference Center Free of Charge No Registration Necessary

Who could have predicted that an 818 page biography of America’s first secretary of the treasury, Alexander Hamilton, would become one of the biggest Broadway smashes of all time? Yet this fascinating blend of history and hip-hop, political debate and show tunes has not only swept the Tony awards, but played to standing room only audiences for over a year! Naturally, as a historian who lives for Broadway, I couldn’t wait to be in the audience. And I can tell you that the show more than lives up to its hype. This is an amazing work of genius—a combination of history, music, performance and thought-provoking content that will long be considered a hallmark in the history of Broadway. In this brand-new, fast-paced and fascinating multimedia presentation, I will offer audiences a mini biography of the real Alexander Hamilton and his place in American history. Then we will look at the life and work of Lin-Manuel Miranda, the genius who created and starred in Hamilton. Finally, we will look at the musical itself. I’ll play excerpts from the songs, explain the narrative structure and help you have a greater appreciation for the show, whether you’ve seen it a dozen times already or are seeing it for the first time!
