Wow, the October 2011 Zone Show was held October 7–9, 2011 at the DFW Marriott Hotel & Golf Club located in Fort Worth, TX and what an by Kendall Workman event! More than 50 registered participants and a slew of fine Oldsmobile’s representing several decades of Oldsmobile technology, innovation and muscle! THANK YOU to everyone that attended the Zone Show, including the volunteers and the host hotel staff that worked to make the show a success. Our only challenge was the weather (again) as we experienced a rain-out of the planned Saturday evening event at the NorthStar Dragway. Oh well, there’s always next year. Our next group event is the Veteran’s Day Weekend (November 11, 12 and 13, 2011) cruise to Fredericksburg, TX. Cooler weather, good food and fun are anticipated; and be on the lookout for an e-mail with additional details regarding the cruise. Our November Monthly Meeting will be held (abbreviated) at the Fredericksburg Inn on Sunday, November 13, 2011 (most likely during breakfast).

Car Show - Fundraiser - Charles Haley of Frisco Auto is hosting a car show and fundraiser with the newly formed “Frisco Classic Car Club” for Morgan Watson, an 18 year old Frisco girl with Leukemia. The show will be the same day as the Frisco Community Parade, November 12th. There will be several thousand people attending the parade and the car show will be very near Main Street where the parade will travel so it should be a good time for all of us “Car Nuts”. Her family is in need of personal financial help due to the severe strain of travel and medical bills over the last 22 months Morgan has been fighting this disease. More information about her can be found on Morgan’s website, www.morganwatsonfoundation.com. The show will include motorcycles and cars with a $20 entry fee for each vehicle. All classic, custom, cool cars, or special interest vehicles are invited. There will be no awards or trophies, just a good time with our cars for a good cause. I have a large lot of about 3 acres right here in downtown Frisco on the South East corner of 1st St and Frisco Square Blvd. for the show. You can Mapquest 6699 Main St, Frisco 75034 for the nearest building which is on the north east corner of where the show will be. There will be food and drinks sold also. Participants will need to be parked by 9AM as the city will close some of the downtown streets at that time or you will have to come in from the back streets. The parade starts at 11am and lasts until about 12 or 12:30pm. (continued on bottom of page 9) The Rocket

4500 Miles to Reno and Back…via Las Vegas by Pat Yancey

I love road trips. Our recent trip to the OCA National Meet in Reno presented an opportunity to see some country we hadn’t seen before. And our friends know how Margaret and I like to play tourist on trips to National Meets. This year Margaret’s sister traveled with us. She has “house sat” for us in past years to take care of all the live stock. Now, since the dog and one of the cats has passed on, we don’t need her to house sit while we attend National Meets. Charlie the cat, could care less if we leave him in a kennel. So, to thank her for past help, we invited Christine to come with us. She enjoyed the trip and meeting all our Olds friends, but was honestly more interested in the trip to Las Vegas to see Celine Dion. Our trip started early Friday morning with a 10 hour run from Houston to Childress, Texas for the night. Still in Texas, I was reminded of a post card I saw when I was just a kid traveling with my parents. The card had a picture of a family loaded for travel with the grammatically incorrect wording “The sun has riz’ The sun has set, and here we iz in Texas yet”. How true that was for us. Our trip then took us to Pueblo, Colorado for the night and on to Grand Junction, Colorado. Colorado is a beautiful state with something new at every turn. From Grand Junction we took the 40 mile drive to Gateway, Colorado the home of the Gateway Auto Museum and the Oldsmobile F-88. That’s one of the nicest museums I’ve ever visited. It’s laid out in different sections for each era of cars. The ‘50’s are in one area, the 60’s in one area and so on. And of course, there is the special room for the grand lady of the exhibit, the 1954 F-88 Oldsmobile. It was like seeing a movie star to view that car close up. I’ll never understand why GM wouldn’t let Oldsmobile build that car. I think it would have outsold the Corvette. Oh yeah, that could have something to do with it.

area, you must put it on your “bucket list”. There is a peaceful ambiance about the area that can’t be explained. You just have to be there.

The Pipe Organ at the Mormon Tabernacle

The grounds around the Tabernacle are beautifully landscaped. When we travel, I like to visit American Legion Posts. While in Salt Lake, I visited an American Legion Post and spent some time visiting with fellow veterans there. American Legion Posts trade license plates with their post information on them so I traded here and added another to our post’s collection. The next day we left Salt Lake City and drove to the Bonneville Salt Flats. That is a very impressive site. Of course we had to souvenir shop. And Margaret made me bag her up a little jar of salt for a “free” souvenir. Roger Peroutka at the Salt Flats

1954 Olds F-88 After a half day in Gateway, it was on to Salt Lake City. We had never been to Salt Lake City or even Utah for that matter. Since Margaret and I both enjoy the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, we just had to visit the area. We spent an entire day at the Temple Square and were present for two organ concerts. We came away with a handful of choir CD’s and wonderful memories. I must say the Mormon folks we met at the Temple Square were some of the nicest people we met on our trip. If you’ve never been to this

The Rocket

Then on to Carlin, NV where we met up with friends from the North Texas Olds Club and Roger and Toni Peroutka from Wisconsin. We met some new friends Gene and Jane, from Ohio in their red 4-4-2. The next day took all of us on a road trip into Reno. The Reno National Meet was good but the best part was our evening sessions with our friends from all around the country. That is the best reason to go to a National Meet. The cars are nice. The swap meet is a good source of parts. But, it’s the people that make it worth the trip. We did gamble a little in Reno and Margaret won a little over $400. Page 6

North Texas Oldsmobile Club

We left Reno at noon on Saturday right after the membership meeting. Christine had us all packed and ready when we got back to the room. She was eager to get to Las Vegas. We spent the next 5 days in Las Vegas. I visited American Legion “Elvis Presley” Post #8 in Las Vegas and met some more fellow veterans. And I collected another American Legion Post license plate for our post’s collection. While in Las Vegas we saw some shows including Celine Dion, Terry Fator, Legends and of course you can’t go to Las Vegas without seeing Jubilee. During the day, Margaret and her sister shopped. Margaret spent her Reno winnings on souvenirs in Las Vegas. While they shopped, I did my own thing. I visited Rick Dale of Rick’s Restorations. You’ve probably seen his show on the History Channel. Then I spent a half day at Count’s Kustoms. I met some super nice folks at both places. I’m talking to Rick about restoring a couple of my pedal cars.

November 2011

I just had to sign Carroll Shelby’s wall. The other highlight of the tour was seeing the Shelby Series I on display. That’s the Olds Aurora powered Shelby and quite honestly my dream car.

Series 1 in the showroom at the Carroll Shelby museum

While in Las Vegas, I took time to visit American Legion Post #8 and visit with more veterans. And of course another legion license plate was added to our collection. The Las Vegas Post #8 is nicknamed the Elvis Presley Post.

Series 1 on the track at the Las Vegas Raceway.

Rick’s Restorations Scott, at Count’s Kustoms gave me some good leads on restoration parts and supplies sources and I gave him some information on Oldsmobiles. I thought that was a good trade. A good friend and fellow Texas Gulf Coast Olds Club member, Albert Ball, was in Las Vegas for a convention so we met up and Me and Rick Dale went to the Shelby Cobra museum at the race track. In addition to his love of Oldsmobiles, Albert is a Mustang nut. We got to see how they build the Cobra and do the new Mustang Cobra modification. While on the tour, someone asked if Carroll Shelby was there. The tour guide said Carroll only comes around a couple of times a year and they never know when he’ll come by. And just about then guess who rode up on his golf cart. Yep, there was Carroll Shelby himself just like he owned the place. Oh wait, he does. Carroll Shelby has signed a lot of autographs in his time and now asks visitors to his museum to sign the wall in the plant. There are thousands of signatures on that wall and Albert and I added Albert Ball signing ours to the numbers. Carroll Shelby’s Wall The Rocket

Before Albert had to get back to his convention, we just had to visit the “Gold and Silver Pawn Shop”. You’ll recognize it from the History channel show Pawn Stars. Unfortunately, Chumlee wasn’t there. Our trip home began early Friday morning with another of those 10 hour drives into Eastern New Mexico. Another great scenery day. The next day took us to Wichita Falls, Texas for the night and then on home arriving mid afternoon Sunday. Our trip took us through Colorado, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico and of course Texas. We saw most of the Truck Stops along the way and met some really nice people. Mornings at motels found us socializing in the motel breakfast areas with fellow travelers. It was fun seeing where folks were from and comparing travel notes. We met one couple from Canada that were headed to Las Vegas for the first time. Margaret gave them a lot of information about Las Vegas and our experiences there. I hope their visit to Las Vegas was more pleasurable with that information. They’re probably still talking about that little lady from Texas that knew so much about Las Vegas. Next time you travel to an OCA National Meet, try playing tourist along the way. You just might be pleased at all the nice people you meet in your Oldsmobile. A check of my trip records showed that we logged 4,491 miles and spent a few dollars over $600 for gas. We’ll start planning our next road trip now. Maybe a trip to Arizona or Oldsmar in the Spring if there aren’t any other schedule conflicts. Anybody up for a caravan? Happy Oldsmobiling. We’ll see you down the road. Page 7
