Any Doubt This Is Seth’s Corvette?

November Meeting Has Been Canceled!-Holiday Dinner Dec 6th at Harry’s Hofbrau SFBA Corsa November 2014

Letter From the Editor I hope you were able to attend our second Tech Session of the year. The attendance was good with nine members and guests. The subject this time was brakes. An appropriate topic for a forty to fifty year old auto. Seth conducted the session and brought in a brake drum and axle setup to demonstrate the steps of changing brake pads and the use of the special brake tools. Special tools (spring pliers, cylinder hone, etc.) aren't absolutely necessary but they make the job a lot easier. This started with a general discussion of the drum brake principles, difference between leading and trailing shoes, selfadjusters, etc. He went over how the front brakes differ with the rear brakes (mainly the parking brake setup). The topic of adding dual master cylinders also was covered. The reason why this is so important for early models and what steps are involved in the conversion. A second portion of the session was to go through the steps in taking the brakes apart and replacing the shoes and springs. Replacement springs come as a set and usually include new cylinder pistons and seal components. Clark mentioned that doing one side at a time was helpful so you could refer to the other side when placement of the parts was in question. Seth said that now days with digital cameras you should take many pictures to help (and there some pretty good YouTube videos also). The use of the retaining spring removal tool was demonstrated. You can use a pair of plyers but this tool makes it a lot easier with less chance of parts being sprung all over the garage floor. Next Seth demonstrated the removal of the main springs and the shoes. He then pointed out the wear spots and how to apply brake lube to the critical areas. If the brake drums are not smooth (they have ridges or groves) then they may need to be "turned" or replaced. Old-time brake shops will be very familiar with this. If the drums are too worn to be safely re-surfaced, then they will have to be replaced. The shop will be able to make that determination.

Re-assembling the brakes was then covered as well as some extra items that might come up. As replceing studs if that were necessary. The last step was to bleed the brakes (this is the one step where Seth says he solicits his wife's help). Starting with the far-

After tightening the valve, she lets up on the pedal. This process is repeated until no air bubbles are seen. Then it is on the next farthest wheel (driver’s side rear). There are also some one-man brake bleeding kits as well as automated setups that pressurize the system and allow you to bleed each wheel just by opening the brake valve an watching for bubbles.

moved to other restaurants. In talking with the SFBA Board members, it was decided to cancel the November meeting. We will be looking for a suitable replacement facility. Stay tuned!

Following the demonstrations, there was a question and answer session that was quite helpful. Brakes are a topic that most don't attempt because it looks too complicated. It was good to see this process broken down to easily manageable steps. Certainly something that anyone could do and save a few $$s in the process. What's better than that?

Here is the former Denny’s. Looks pretty empty doesn’t it?

There are a few pictures shown on page 5. I should have taken more but I got too absorbed in the presentations and BBQ. May be next time. We wish to thank Harry & Carol for their hospitality and Seth for setting up and conducting this excellent Tech Session. It was very informative! After the "garage work" was completed, we adjourned for a BBQ. There hotdogs and hamburgers were cooking and Harry provided chips, dips, and sodas. Thanks to every for their help in making this an enjoyable Saturday! I just got word from Marlene Garrity that Denny's in Danville (our usual meeting location) has closed. I assume they are closing for good as the sign on the door said "Lost our lease. Thanks for being our guest for all these years". This caught other groups by surprise as well as there were hand written signs saying meetings had been

Lastly our Annual Holiday Dinner is scheduled for Saturday, December 6th at Harry's Hofbrau. Starting around 7:00 PM. Mark your calendars. If you know of conflicts with this date, please email Tony, Harry, or myself so we can check into this. There will be more info in the next newsletter.

Rob finally drove his ‘64 Spyder he has been working on. This has a 140hp engine.

Here you can see where Rob put the elevated stop lights. Interesting idea.

And for backup lights, Rob used two other strips of white LEDs (hard to see in this photo).

Roger drove his very nice ‘67 Coupe.

Getting setup for the demo in Harry’s garage.
