Numbered Heads Together Strategy Students should be in teams of 4 students if possible. Each student is assigned a number within the team. (e.g. 1, 2, 3, and 4) The teacher will pose a question and then give students “think time” to formulate their own answer. When the teacher says, “Heads together!” students must stand up, put their heads near each other, and discuss the question using “team voices”. “Team voices” (which are quiet and speak one person at a time) may need to be practiced before beginning the activity. Everyone on the team must add at least one thought to the discussion, and when everyone has had a turn to share, the entire team sits down. It is important that each member of the team can verbalize an answer. Once all the teams are seated the teacher repeats the question and spins a spinner to choose a number one through four. When the spinner stops on a number, the person on each team that is assigned that same number must stand up. (Approximately five or six students should be standing.) The teacher will choose one of the standing students to answer the question. o Emphasize that everyone needs to contribute to the answer and everyone is accountable for knowing the answer that the team has discussed.
