Oakville Quilters Guild September/October 2013 Volume 20 – Issue 1 Next Meetings: Venue:

September 19, 2013 at 7:30 pm October 17, 2013 at 7:30 pm Central Baptist Church, 340 Rebecca Street, Oakville.

From the Guild President Welcome back! I hope you all had a great summer. I’ve been busy chasing Gavin around our backyard with the hose and blowing bubbles at him (usually not at the same time). We did a couple of trips this summer as well. We went to Sauble Beach where there were lots of seagulls to chase, and we also saw a humongous turtle when we were canoeing at Rockwood Conservation Area. I’ve been doing a bit of sewing this summer as well, but I’ve really been working on getting my sewing room organized. I moved into this space two years ago and I’ve finally dealt with all the piles that were just thrown into a corner. Last year, I started folding my stash to store on shelves and now that is finished! I’m really happy with it – I see all my fabric and I think I can now fit more fabric in there too. Now, I’m going to slowly (so slowly) deal with my scraps. They’re already sorted by colour, but I’m going to start pre-cutting them into strips and squares so I might be able to make something with them when an idea hits. This is a really exciting year for us because it’s our Twentieth Anniversary! We have lots of activities planned for the entire year as well as a lot of great speakers at our meetings. We’ll explain everything at the September meeting so you don’t want to miss it! Melissa 1

GuildthAnniversary

For this 20 anniversary year, there will be a number of activities spread over the year. The various activities are all quilting related – SEW we will be doing what we all enjoy! The idea being food for the soul (rather than the belly!) At the September meeting, all the planned activities will be revealed and explained. Samples will also be available at the September meeting. One of the activities is a workshop series. We are giving a little advance notice about these workshops, so you can think about them and be ready to sign up at the September meeting when registration will begin. VERY IMPORTANT: Each member of the Guild will be entitled to sign up for one of the six workshops free of charge. This is one of the Guild’s gifts to you. There are limited spaces available, so it is important to sign up as soon as possible. Should you wish to take any of the other workshops, we will keep a ‘wait list’ and if there is space, and on a first come – first served basis, and at a cost of $40.00 per workshop, you may be able to take two or more of the workshops offered.

Deco Dahlia is based on a technique called Japanese folded patchwork. The look is similar to Cathedral Windows, but there is no handwork involved! Quilters who have never done this before will be surprised at the simplicity of the technique. The finished piece is approximately 24” by 39”, featuring a large, colourful flower and its leaves. The colours can be very controlled, or a variety of scraps. Either style can be very effective. There will be kits available at the Quilters Garden Patch to make one exactly like mine, or you can use your own fabrics. Every quilter seems to love designs made with eight pointed stars but some shy away from making them because of the dreaded inset seams. In this workshop you will cut and make an eight-pointed star block learning a method to construct any sized eightpointed star without sewing an inset seam. The workshop will also cover making strip sets and cutting the same at 45-degree angles. You will have a star block finished by the end of the workshop. This is the method used to make my "Oh My Stars" quilt which won a prize in our last Quilt Show. 3

This will be a hand appliqué method that enables intricate designs to be used in a variety of ways using a top and background fabric. We will do a sample to learn the stitching process and we will also discuss designing and usage in other projects.

Make a sampler of fabric manipulation techniques – fold it, gather it, ruche it, fray it, wrinkle it, layer it!

The technique is raw edge appliqué to make an art project, using heat and bond/stream-a-seam and scissors.

Monet? Renoir? Van Gogh? Learn how to reproduce or interpret your favourite Old Master painting in Quilt, using various techniques and fabric choices. The techniques are also useful for landscapes/pictorial quilts. What to do with your masterpiece when it's done? A wall hanging! Back of a one-of-a-kind quilted jacket! A special pillow! Tote bag! One of several for an "Old Master" quilt! These are only a few suggestions, there are many more.

All workshops will take place on a Saturday and be held in the Fibre Arts Studio at Queen Elizabeth Park Community & Cultural Centre (QEPCCC), 2302 Bridge Road, Oakville. Dawne ☺

Outreach News We're looking forward to seeing the Outreach regulars back at our monthly Tuesday mornings at St. Paul's United Church, Rebecca Street, for more sewing and social activity, and hoping that there will be some new recruits this year. We meet the second Tuesday of the month from 9:30 a.m., usually packing up around noon. You can bring a machine or come prepared to cut, sandwich, hand-sew, organize fabric or projects, etc. Our annual sale last June brought in about $68 from sale of books and fabric, including a carrying case kindly donated by Heather Dryden. We have also been very fortunate to be the recipients of a legacy of approximately $300.00 collected by the friends of Joanne Merksamer; Joan King, Rosemary Rosier and Sara Turner. Joanne belonged to a smaller quilting group locally and these ladies decided that Joanne would have been pleased that her fabrics were going to be put to good use by Outreach. A big Thank You to Joan, Rosemary and Sara for doing all the work and organizing this. It will be interesting to see what we can make with all our new fabric. If you are not able to join us at our monthly get-togethers, you can still contribute to Outreach by sewing at home if you have any free moments. We have some kits available to be made up into tops, and are always needing quilting or binding done.

Library News Inventory was taken in August and currently we have 20 books missing so could you please look around your home or the cottage or your sewing room and see if there are books to be returned. After three years of being the Librarian, Pat has decided to resign due to personal (not health) reasons. Thank you to Pat for being the Librarian these past three years. A warm welcome to Louise Gravel, our new Librarian!

Books borrowed from the library are due back at the next Quilt Guild meeting. Only members of the Oakville Quilters Guild may borrow books.

Getting to Know You Rosemary Rosier Rosemary is a lady with challenges - after demonstrating the 'Ticker Tape quilts' at the last walkabout, she issued a challenge for the fall - two little quilts! She has done this before, for example, the crazy nine patch - I have two baby quilts to show for it. A lady with many ideas! Rosemary joined the Guild a few years after it was established. Her good friend Joan King invited her to a trunk show and she immediately signed up for a beginner class at the local quilt shop. The sampler quilt she made at the class was a success and she proudly hung it up. The next project, however, was a disaster. Lesson learned: be accurate - don't rush! Over the years, Rosemary has volunteered at our Guild, on the phone and membership committees, doing demos and at the quilt shows. Most of her projects have been donated but she is keeping a few favourite ones! Her present long-term goal is to make six twin size bed quilts and a couple of picnic quilts for her cabin in the Blue Mountains. These will be the quilts that stay in the family and get loved and used - and will keep Rosemary busy for a while... However, Rosemary has a number of other artistic hobbies. "Quilting is just one of the many things I love to do. I'm always inspired by the wonderfully talented people I meet in music, painting and quilting world. The best part about joining any group is the laughter and friendships you make along the way." Rosemary's mantra: Keep It Simple and Enjoy! We're looking forward to your next challenge, Rosemary! Sara Turner In 1979, when some of Sara's friends were having babies, Sara thought it would be nice to make baby quilts for presents. When she moved to Toronto, she took quilting classes at the Beehive Quilt store - and made one quilt! Sara would often go to her aunt's house and quilt with her on her big frame, and she continued to collect patterns and do handwork - but no quilts - until Rosemary Rosier talked her into joining the Guild. Time is a rare commodity for Sara, with her family and elderly parents, but she enjoys the Guild for the friends she has made and the inspiration from Bring and Brag each month. Like many of us, she has lots of plans in her head! At our last quilt show, Sara was determined to put in a quilt and it has become her favourite. She is making another one like it but with a different colour palette. She loves the Moda bakeshop website for all their ideas. Outreach has also benefitted from her talents, especially the applique, which she finds very portable. Besides quilting, Sara enjoys rug hooking and one day will make a rug and quilt to match. And yes, she loves to cook - food always goes with quilting! "Quilting is a very calming pastime and the friends you meet along the way are priceless". Compiled by Ursula Thomson

Fabric Exchange We have decided to try something different this year for the Block of the Month. We are going to do a Fabric Exchange! This would be done in three-month segments – i.e. Sept-Oct-Nov. We ask you to sign up for this so we will know how many people are involved. You will need to bring 15 strips x 2-1/2 inch x WOF of quilting quality fabric of a specific colour each month. Each time you sign up will involve a three-month period – i.e. Sept, Oct, Nov and three different colours. This would be returned to you at the third month meeting as a jellyroll. You can use a metre of fabric, 2 half metres, or 15 different strips ... it's up to you. And you can sign up for as many of the exchanges as you would like. The only stipulation is the colour must read as the stated colour (can include bits of another colour). The first exchange: September : the colour will be CREAM October : the colour will be GOLD November : the colour will be BROWN The second exchange: January : the colour will be PINK February : the colour will be PURPLE March : the colour will be GREEN The third exchange: April : the colour will be BLUE May : the colour will be YELLOW June : the colour will be WHITE Please bring your fabrics in a large zip lock bag, so they can be returned the same way.

Vacant Positions All of the things that you enjoy about guild are due to your fellow members volunteering their efforts. Every year we need people to replace those that have completed their two-year terms as executive members. For the 2013-2014 year we are looking for a: • Vice President This will be Melissa’s last year as President. It would be really good to have someone take on the Vice President this year, and then become the President next year. This will also be Mary’s last year as Treasurer (she actually took on another year to help us out) so we are looking for a Treasurer for the 201415 year. During this year Mary is happy to show the ropes to whoever takes over, like “job-shadowing”. If you have any questions about these positions, please talk to Melissa or Mary respectively.

Cards Please contact Aurea Bielby at [email protected] if you know of anyone in our guild who is in the hospital recuperating at home or of anyone needing to know we are thinking of them during a difficult time. Aurea

Name Badges Please remember to wear your name badge at meetings. You may know who you are, but there area others in the room that would like to put a name to a face.

Workshop Registration Workshops are open to all members of the Guild. If members do not fill the spots available, then non-members may participate at a higher rate. All workshops MUST be paid for at time of registration either by cash or cheque. The Oakville Quilters Guild does not issue refunds for cancellations. If you are unable to attend an OQG workshop, it is your responsibility to find a replacement. 9

Notices Guild members, who for example, have a quilt frame to sell, can write up the information and at the beginning of the meeting, give it to Melissa. Then, during the meeting, Melissa will call upon you to make the announcement. If you don’t wish to speak, Melissa will make the announcement for you. Notices may still be placed on the notice board next to the Block of the Month.
