Valley Forge Signal Seekers Radio Control Model Airplane Club An AMA Gold Leader Club !

October 2012

The President’s Corner Hi, fellow fliers and fans of VFSS Radio Control flying club. We are an Academy of Model Aeronautics Gold Leader Club, existing in Valley Forge Historic Park since 1959. Autumn is upon us, and cooler, drier days are here (a big relief after July being too hot to fly!) and more members and new club members are coming out to fly. Get your flying in while you can, because soon it will be too frosty and/or windy and chilly to fly outdoors. Time to dust off those simulator transmitters if you haven't already been using them all season (recommended). Building season will soon be upon us, so time to dust off those projects you've had on hand or been planning to purchase all year.

Building Service Speaking of building season, as I mentioned at September membership meeting, this past summer, I inaugurated an R/C plane and helicopter building service (even fighting robots!) for those of you that need projects built and don't have time and/or are too busy with other projects or life in general. or email to inquire about rates. When you love what you do, it’s not work! I have loved building RC models since 1972, so talk to me about projects you would like built. Turnaround times and rates are dependent on the degree of ARF of the model, and its complexity. Just give me a shout.

Last General Meeting At the September meeting we were treated to a great lecture and demo of the latest in state-of-the-art R/C Pattern aircraft by an American R/C champion. When I first got in to the hobby in 1972, Pattern was the penultimate R/C event at meets and competitions. Names like Hanno Prettner were well known worldwide. Over the last 12 years or so, 3D competitions for fixed wing and helis have become the rage, but Pattern never really went away. Of particular interest was the state in the art of T-shaped, behind-thecanopy airfoils, which improve performance by breaking up fuselage vortices and channeling them into laminar flow, same as wingtip rightangle fins. Jeff Burns showed a beautiful yellow glider, 90% completed except for radio installation and linkages, complete with air brakes and spoilers, and it was, I must say, really impressive. I showed off some R/C planes I was finishing for clients that are all

finished now: a beautiful and scale Cessna 182 with an electric motor and ESC set up ($130 ARF kit from China Model Productions), and a 62" wingspan scale Piper Cub that I am now putting an O.S. .65 two-stroke engine in.

Roll out the Barrel and We'll have a Barrel of Fun I made it a point to read former VicePresident Michael Lebrun's letter about proposed actions to be taken if Saturday evening fliers keep leaving the equipment barrel open all night. 'Nuff said. Be vigilant, people!

More Books Here are a few more tomes you may find intriguing sitting by the fireplace relaxing with a cup of hot chocolate: Continued on page 2
