NNS Converts to Natural Gas As of Oct. 5, Newport News Shipbuilding has converted its steam-generation plant from heavy fuel oil, also known as Bunker C, to natural gas to improve safety and lower operating costs and emissions to the environment. The plant generates low-pressure steam to heat many of the shipyard’s facilities, to provide process heat and to support hotel services – including hot water, food preparation and galley services – to the ships undergoing construction and overhaul. “We started researching and evaluating alternative options about four years ago with the goal of implementation by 2016,” said Bill Cash-Robertson, environmental engineer. “Not only does the conversion to natural gas make good business sense, it’s more efficient, it’s cleaner, and it’s safer to operate.” The old system, which included three 70-year-old boilers, burned about 6 million gallons of heavy fuel oil last year, costing the shipyard about $15 million. Plant Engineering Supervisor Ken Allmon, a member of the shipyard’s energy management team, said the new system will reduce greenhouse gases by 30 percent and save the shipyard several million dollars per year in lower utility costs. “The team is proud of our work to overcome technical challenges and implement a solution that... Cohort 2 Completes E&D’s Rotational Program On Oct. 2, 13 employees completed Engineering and Design’s (E&D) Rotational Program. The participants are the second rotational group to complete the two-year E&D program. Tony Woodrum, a member of Cohort 2, said, “The rotation program sheds light on how important it is for each of us to approach our jobs with absolute dedication and commitment every day.” The program, started by Jennifer Boykin, vice president of E&D, began two-and-a-half years ago to increase awareness of various shipbuilding value streams and to develop high achievers and future leaders for Newport News Shipbuilding. The rotational program continues to grow with four cohorts rotating every six months though different areas of the company including: Augmented Reality, Common Integrated Work Package, Test Engineering and Kesselring Site Operations in New York. Currently, the program has 59 participants with the addition of the most recent group – Cohort 6. “This has been and will probably be the most fortunate and beneficial opportunity of my career,” said Brent Woodhouse (E08). Designer Candice McDougald, added, “I’m now a well-rounded shipbuilder who stepped outside of her comfort zone to help build good ships. I learned a ton along the way.”

A-School and E&D Host Professional Development Program Breakfast for Apprentices On Sept. 18, the Professional Development Program (PDP) apprentices gathered for breakfast and to talk with Apprentice Facility and engineering leadership about their experience in combining Apprentice education with the pursuit of an engineering degree. The event was hosted by The Apprentice School and Newport News Shipbuilding’s Engineering and Design Division. The program allows apprentices to gain on-the-job engineering experience in the manufacturing, construction, maintenance and overhaul of some the most complex ships in the world while earning a bachelor of science in electrical or mechanical engineering. The program currently hosts 40 students, with the first three graduating in spring 2016. “This rotation gives the apprentice experience working with a variety of people, also allows the apprentice to work with a variety of current shipyard leaders who do their work well, and to learn from their example,” Chief Engineer

Charles Southall said, “Everyone here has a responsibility in this program. Whether that be the management team helping guide these students and focus on building our future leaders or whether it’s the students themselves who have to work hard and apply themselves 100 percent to this program.” The goal of PDP is to strengthen the bridge between NNS’ industrial and technical leadership. The seminars will continue to occur quarterly to allow the students and management team to remain connected.

NNS Converts to Natural Gas

REMINDER: Pedestrian and Vehicle Safety

CONTINUED FROM PG 1

Newport News Shipbuilding has received several complaints of employees darting into traffic when crossing Huntington Ave. and Washington Ave. as well as cars speeding up when employees are crossing the street. NNS would like to remind all employees to be cautious when walking to the gates or to other forms of transportation and to be vigilant and mindful of your surroundings. All employees are reminded of the following:

... is a win for everybody,” he said. Will Koeck, the project’s construction engineer, said one challenge was to safely remove and install large boilers in a plant that had to continue operating during the conversion. “We met the challenge with careful coordination and planning, and we had the first new boiler in place making steam in December 2014,” he said. Visit newsroom.huntingtoningalls.com to read the complete news release. Cover photo: NNS has converted its steam-generation plant from heavy fuel oil to natural gas. • Cross the street only at designated crosswalks. • Do not dart out into traffic. • Stop before crossing the street; look left and right and left again then cross when clear. • Make eye contact with the driver before you cross in front of a vehicle. • It is safest to walk on the sidewalk.

• Continue to look for traffic at all times. • Be careful at the intersections, where drivers might have a tendency to not yield the right-of-way. • Look across all lanes of traffic before crossing and visually clear each lane before proceeding. Even if one motorist stops, do not assume drivers in other lanes can see you and will stop. • Don’t wear headphones or talk on a cell phone while crossing.
