NNS Floods Dry Dock and Floats Gerald R. Ford

On Oct. 11, Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) began flooding the dry dock where the aircraft carrier Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) has been under construction since November 2009. With the push of a dozen buttons, Ship’s Sponsor Susan Ford Bales initiated the flow of more than 100 million gallons of water into the dry dock. The flooding of the dry dock takes place in phases during which various tests are conducted. Initially, the dock is flooded about 4 feet high to its keel blocks, wood-capped concrete pads on which the ship has been supported during construction. Once the dock is fully flooded and initial afloat testing is complete, water will be partially pumped out and the ship returned to her keel blocks in anticipation of Ford’s christening on Nov. 9. The ship will float again about a week later when it is moved to a pier for outfitting. Ford is scheduled for delivery to the U.S. Navy in 2016. “Flooding of the dry dock, floating of the ship, and transfer to the outfitting pier all represent the successful completion of a tremendous amount of hard work by our talented shipbuilders,” said Rolf Bartschi, vice president of CVN 78 Carrier Construction. “The shipbuilding team has taken great pride in building this first-of-class ship, and we all look forward to the next phase of ship construction and testing that will occur at the pier.” WiSE Invites Shipbuilders to Wear PINK on Friday in Support of Breast Cancer Awareness p. 2 Oct. 14-18, 2013

NNS Hosts First-Ever Manufacturing Day Newport News Shipbuilding’s (NNS) Career Pathways Program held its firstever Manufacturing Day event on Oct. 4 with one goal in mind: dispel stereotypes about manufacturing careers. The program invited a group of career coaches and guidance counselors from area high schools and community colleges to NNS to learn about manufacturing behind the shipyard gates and the career opportunities it can provide to graduates. “Manufacturing Day was a great opportunity for high school personnel to see that this is not your father’s shipyard,” said Susan Generazio, career coach at Thomas Nelson Community College’s New Horizons Regional Technical Education Center. “I was impressed to see 21st century technology being used in all of the shops in this 127-year-old business. Newport News Shipbuilding is a wonderful place for any young person, no matter what their

interest or ability, to enter and advance in STEM careers.” The group’s tour of the shipyard included a visit to the Machine Shop and a panel discussion with leaders in NNS’ Manufacturing Division. “Manufacturing Day provided us a tremendous opportunity to communicate our needs to an audience of people who influence young people’s future career choices,” said Becky Stewart, vice president of Manufacturing. “We recognize that many people don’t know how complex the work is that we do at the shipyard, and we welcomed the opportunity to educate our community’s educators so that students will make more informed decisions about a future career here.”

WiSE Invites All Shipbuilders to Wear PINK on Friday In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Women in Shipbuilding Enterprise (WiSE) invite all shipbuilders to wear pink on Friday, Oct. 18 to help spread awareness about breast cancer and the fight against it.

Shipbuilders Walk in the Peninsula Heart Walk Despite the clouds and rain, more than 150 shipbuilders from Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS), Huntington Ingalls Industries’ (HII) Corporate Office and AMSEC attended this year’s Peninsula Heart Walk on Saturday, Oct. 12. This was the second Hampton Roads Heart Walk this year, the first event was held at Mt. Trashmore on Sept. 21. The annual walk is one of the more than 450 events held by the American Heart Association each year to promote physical activity and to raise awareness of the country’s no. 1 and no. 4 killers, heart disease and stroke. Combined between the walks on Sept. 21 and Oct. 12 walks, shipbuilders were able to raise more than $29,000 in support of heart research. Prior to the start of the walk, the American Heart Association recognized Brandon Booker, E86 nuclear engineer, and Bob Harrington, AMSEC curriculum director, with the 2013 Peninsula Lifestyle Change Award. The award is presented to individuals who have made positive changes to improve their quality of life and health. Pamela DeLar, team lead of NNS’ “Heart Stuff Done Right” team, participated in this year’s walk in honor of her father who passed away after his battle with heart disease and in support of her brother who is currently... In honor of Quality Month, the Quality and Process Excellence Division is asking employees to take a few minutes to think about what first-time quality means. Throughout the month of October, employees will be featured in Currents with their response to the question:

“What does first-time quality mean to me?” Larry Deaver X10 General Foreman When I think about first-time quality I think about meeting the customer’s requirements with no rework. Therefore, it is critical to have a clear understanding of the requirements before starting the work to ensure that the customer is receiving the best value possible.

Hunter is the first USCAA golfer to win two individual championships and is the first four-time USCAA All-American golfer in Apprentice School history. Following his win last Tuesday, Hunter said, “I am truly honored and blessed to win today. I give God all the glory. I get the trophies, but he gets the glory. I’m just so grateful and fortunate to have the ability to perform and represent The Apprentice School.”

Quality, like safety, is everyone’s responsibility. Being accountable for quality means quality expectations are met cradle to grave each and every day. A Quality Management System (QMS) plus the people that drive it equals a Quality Operating System (QOS), further ensuring the job is done right the first time and every time. While challenges may exist, viewing work this way allows me to make certain that the expectations from both my internal and external customers are understood and met with 100 percent certainty. To me, success means our product quality is never second guessed. Photos by Ricky Thompson and John Whalen
