Welcome to Lomax! A special welcome to our guests! 20, 19, 18, 17...3, 2, 1. That’s all it takes--20 seconds of courage. When we look at monumental moments in life, could they not all be boiled down to 20 seconds? The greatest baseball play you have ever seen is shorter than 20 seconds. The most spectacular dunk of the basketball season could be replayed five times in 20 seconds. A job could be won or lost within the first 20 seconds of the interview. What really made me think of 20 seconds of courage is the movie “We Bought a Zoo.” In this movie Matt Damon, as Benjamin Mee, notices that his 13-year-old son has a crush on a girl he has gotten to know. However, his son is too scared to make a move and say something to the girl. While sitting down and talking to his son, Damon makes a statement I will never forget, “...it only takes 20 seconds of courage.” His point was if his son could muster the courage to talk to his “crush” for 20 seconds, it could potentially change his life. Could 20 seconds really change a life? I think about the time it took Jesus to tell his apostles, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Matthew 28:18-20). I know this took less than 20 seconds and in this time Jesus started something that would change the history of the world! So, here is my challenge for the day; give God 20 seconds of outrageous courage! Whether you will fight off that nagging temptation that Satan continually throws at you or finally talk to that one friend about salvation, give God 20 seconds of courage. God has already changed the history of the world once in 20 seconds. What will you let Him do through you in 20 seconds today? Also, thanks to The Herald for coming our way….Be sure and check the calendar on page two and note planned activities such as our annual Ladies Day on Nov. 2 and Friends & Family Day on Nov. 10...We are studying the Sermon on the Mount (Matt. 5-7) in our Wed. night auditorium class. The emphasis is on attitudes and keeping the heart right with God. Note the following: The Golden Rule (Mt. 7:12) reminds us that wherever we go we are to let folks see the spirit of meekness and gentleness in our daily lives (cf. Gal. 6:1-5). Our Lord talks about the heart and how hardness is to be avoided. (Matt. 5:8ff). Jesus declares the He hates sin but loves the sinner. The beatitudes of the sermon emphasize the proper attitude of the follower of Christ. One of the major problems of the Scribes and Pharisees was hardness of heart. We often sing “Is The Heart Right With God?” Elders are to practice patience and gentleness (l Tim. 3:3). Aren’t you glad that we have a fine group of elders at Lomax that know these principles! Preachers are to speak the truth in love (Eph. 4:15) and avoid hardness of heart but always have an open mind and a spirit of understanding. Yes, and all Christians should melt the hard heart and bring the robe to others. (See Lk. 15). Let us never forget to practice the “The Golden Rule.” “Mr. Little”...A man by the name of Little lived in a little house in a little town, and worked for a little salary. The neighbors wondered how Mr. Little and the whole Little family could get along on so little. He was asked, Mr. Little, how do you and Mrs. Little and the seven little Littles get along on such little? He replied, “Every Little Helps.” —Submitted & from The Messenger… On The Lighter Side: The religious cowboy lost his favorite Bible while he was mending fences on the range. Three weeks later a cow walked up to him carrying the Bible in its mouth. The cowboy couldn’t believe his eyes. He took the precious book out of the cow’s mouth and raised his eyes heavenward and said, “It’s a miracle!” Not really said the cow. “Your name is inside the cover.” —Submitted… Sentence Sermon: Evil is a stream that flows back to its source.

Obeying the Gospel and living a saved life is like making a reservation, a reservation for Heaven. While the reservation is not needed because there is limited space (contrary to the assertions of our Jehovah’s Witness friends), it is needed so that proper preparation can be made for our presence there. After all, Jesus told His disciples (and us by extension) that He has gone to do that very thing (John 14:2-3). Don’t you think it would be wise to let Him know we are coming? In fact, such a gesture is demanded by Him. Heaven is not a place that people will simply stroll into, unaware of what or where they are. Heaven is a prepared place for prepared people. So how do we accept His invitation and make Him aware of our plans to be there? Simple: obey the Gospel and live a saved life, namely, hear (Rom. 10:4), believe (John 8:24), repent (Luke 13:3), confess (Rom 10:9-10), be immersed (Acts 2:38), and then live a faithful life (Rev 2:10). That is it! What an amazing opportunity! How easy and glorious it is! Jesse Wagner South Green St. Church of Christ Glasgow, KY bulletin digest

An elderly Christian lady, dreadfully crippled with rheumatism, used to hobble to the services of the church on two sticks. It was a great ordeal and required of her considerable toil and pain. A friend of hers observed her regularly and asked: “How do you manage to be at every service?” Her answer was classic: “My heart gets there first and my old legs just follow after.” There is the key to faithfulness, not only in attendance at the worship assemblies, but in living a life worthy of the name “Christian.”

Jesus had taught men to seek first His Kingdom and His righteousness (Matt 6:33). All acceptable service to God and His Son begins in the heart -- a heart filled with love. A heart filled with the love of God and His Son will show itself in external actions. Jesus said, “If you love me, keep my commandments” (John 15:14). The Lomax Messenger Published weekly by the If Jesus truly is Lord in our hearts, our lives will be lived so Lomax Church of Christ that others will see Christ living in us and the hope we have 320 Darbytown Road in our heart (l Peter 3: 15-16). Hohenwald, TN 38462 We have heard the expression, “their heart is not in it.” I'm afraid that the Lord, who knows the hearts of all men, must be saying that about many people who profess to follow Christ. Is your heart in the service to Christ? If so, you’ll be like the lady above: your heart gets there first and your legs naturally will follow.
