Taking a Risk… Do you remember the Costa Concordia cruise liner which ran aground in January of 2012 off the coast of Italy? The horrific accident killed 12 people. The disaster left the three football fields-long ship resting in the water on its side. At the same time, the wreckage also created a monstrous eye sore off the otherwise picturesque Italian coast. In recent days, the Costa Concordia has been in world news headlines again as a major effort has been underway to raise the ship from the ocean depths. The plan was to try to turn the vessel upright so that it could be sailed away with the aid of another ship. The hope was also to at least salvage as much of the ship as possible and to return the coastline to a more pristine state. One reason that the salvage work garnered so much attention is that the engineering method used for raising the ship had never been tried before. It involved new thinking, risky maneuvers and at least some speculation that since such ideas had not been tried before, they would never work. In the end, though, the plan worked almost to perfection and now the Costa Concordia is sitting upright in the Italian water for the first time in 20 months while waiting to be sailed away never to be seen or heard from again. What strikes me in the story of the Costa Concordia is the reminder of how quick we are to write off new ideas, visions or ways of doing things simply because they have never been done or tried before. Most of us are creatures of habit and routine, which leads us to doubt new ideas and become pessimistic toward different ways of doing things. At the same time, as people of faith, we also know that the New Testament reminds us that the Spirit of God is as mysterious as the wind. We do not know where it comes from or where it is going. It blows this way one moment and the other way the next. Our job, in light of this mysterious Spirit, is to be attentive to God’s voice and be prepared to follow wherever it is that we are led. Sometimes, this means continuing to do things the way that we have always done them. At other times, though, it means heading off in new direction or utilizing different methods and means than we ever have before. When this happens, risk certainly also enters the vocabulary of our everyday lives. At the same time, this is exactly what it means to be people of faith. That is to say we are people who are willing to follow God and God’s direction upon our lives-even into uncharted territory. …Rickey

CHILDREN FBC’s Children’s Ministry is making the most out of the student holiday this month by holding a hotdog roast the night before at the home of Carroll and Nancy Thompson. After dinner we’re going to have a game of glow-in-the-dark capture the flag. Bring a flashlight, a big appetite, and a friend to this free event. The event will begin at 5:30pm and we will wrap up around 9:00pm. Call the church or email [email protected] to sign-up! Our annual Trunk or Treat will be held on Thursday evening, October 31st. Supper is at 5:00pm (signup required), with trick or treating from 6-7pm. Join us for a safe and fun place to take the kids for candy, costumes, and fun walk or ride to the First Baptist parking lot this Halloween! Guests are welcome, so help us spread the word about this event!

YOUTH Upcoming Youth Events for the Fall include two retreats for Middle and High School Students, as well as our “First” Fifth Quarter on November 1st. The “First” Fifth Quarter, which is open to all Youth, will begin after the conclusion of the Laurens/JL Mann game and will take place in the FLC. The event will conclude at midnight. SAMARITANS PURSE CHRISTMAS SHOEBOXES: One of the best ways to help our children learn about missions is to let them prepare a shoebox for a child at Christmas! This year the boxes have been provided for us, so you will not need a shoebox or a plastic storage container. Just stop by the church and pick up a box, fill it with goodies, and return it to the church. You may also give a cash donation to Samaritans Purse and we will do the shopping for you. The boxes are due Sunday, November 10 so start your Christmas shopping now!

SC BAPTIST DISASTER RELIEF TRAINING: OCTOBER 11 & 12: This fall’s training for anyone interested in helping with SC Baptist Disaster Relief work will be October 11 -12 at White Oak Conference Center. The cost is $35 for returning volunteers and $40 for first time volunteers. One of the most outstanding ministries of Baptists is our response to people all over the world in the midst of largescale disasters. Anyone interested in attending or with questions may contact Rickey or email him at [email protected].

OUR FALL DAY OF SERVICE will be Saturday, November 9. Mark your calendars now to join us as we go out and serve in the community. More specific details will soon follow!

Our Sunday and Wednesday night schedule is now in full swing, and it is never too late to get involved! There is something for everyone-children, youth, and adults. For the schedule of events, check the website at www.fbclaurens.org. Sunday School is an important part of our spiritual growth, and provides an important connection point for everyone in our congregation. FBC Laurens offers a wide variety of Sunday School classes for people of all ages. If you would like more information on one of our classes, pick a Sunday School information sheet located on the table in the Rotunda. If you need help deciding which class to attend, contact Tommy by calling the church office or by email at [email protected]. SOMETHING NEW! We will be starting a Men’s Bible Study on Sunday, October 6 at 6pm in the Conference Room. The 6-week study, A Man and His Design, introduces God’s clear design for authentic manhood. Each man will discover a biblical definition of manhood, learn its four “faces,” and how to anticipate and transition through the specific seasons of life. The cost is $10, which covers the cost of the training guide. The study will be led by Tommy Cox. To register, simply sign up on the pew pad or contact the church office. Attention Adult Sunday School Leaders! Our next leadership meeting will be Sunday, October 27 at 8:45am in Bobo Hall. Please make plans to attend!

PAIRS & SPARES (a lively and welcoming Sunday school class for married and singles in their 20’s and 30’s) will start a new series in October: FATAL DISTRACTIONS by Ed Young. This study takes an in-depth look at some of life’s most deadly sins  pride anger • envy • lust • slothfulness • greed • gluttony  and will show us that, ‘through the power of God as we apply His Word to our lives, we can avoid the destructive, downward spiral of sins and live above the level of life’s FATAL DISTRACTIONS’. Please call Beth Holmes at 864-5530950 if you are interested in joining our class for this study so we can make sure we have enough books (only $4)! Hope to see you October 6th at 9:30am!
