Program code: SAAKP10 On June 21, 1967, at the age of 17, Lucy Winer was committed to Kings Park State Hospital following a series of failed suicide attempts. Now a veteran filmmaker, Lucy has returned to Kings Park for the first time in over thirty years to document her experiences. She has also sought out the intimate stories of other former patients, families, and staff. Kings Park broke audience attendance records at the Stony Brook Film Festival, and has received glowing reviews around the nation. This free screening, a Sachem exclusive, will be followed by a discussion led by co-producer and director Lucy Winer and other members of the production team.

Each month a guest poet presents a reading after which the audience is encouraged to share original works at an open mic. This month’s reader is Gladys Henderson, whose first chapbook of poetry, Eclipse of Heaven, was published by Finishing Line Press in 2008. She was a finalist for the Paumanok Poetry Award in 2006, was named the Walt Whitman Birthplace Poet of the Year in 2010, and has been awarded first place in eight competitions on Long Island. Leaving Little Italy: Last Words on a Locale Tuesday, October 8 • 7:00pm • Program code: SAALLI10 As long as there were Little Italys occupied by Americans of Italian descent, the histories and stories never died. Now that the great majority of Italian-Americans no longer live in Little Italys, it is the job of culture, and not geographic space, to maintain and transmit a cultural identity we can call Italian-American. Using storytelling and non-fictional techniques, Dr. Fred Gardaphe, Professor of Italian-American Studies at Queens College, will dramatize the life and death of America’s Little Italys, and present a case for the impact these changes have had on Italian-American culture. This program, which is free and open to the public, is made possible through the support of the New York Council for the Humanities’ Speakers in the Humanities program.
