A scenic place where man's architecture and nature's artistry are in perfect symphony, Orchha was founded by Maharaja Rudra Pratap Singh in 1501. The Orchha fort was constructed at the same time. The Rama Raja Temple and Jahangir Mahal here are of major tourist interest, with delicately sculpted balconies and cenotaphs(chhatris). The majestic fort provides panoramic views of the green environs of Madhya Pradesh, leaving one spell bound. The beauty of this place is made even more exquisite when the seasonal Betwa river flows through here, and the fort area disintegrates into beautiful islands.

Betwa River

Orchha Travel Guide - http://www.ixigo.com/travel-guide/orchha

Betwa River, Orchha, Madhya Pradesh, India One of the famous attractions in town, Betwa River is an ideal spot for a fun-filled picnic outing with your family and friends. Just across the Betwa and Jamuni rivers, a half hour’s drive east of Orchha, is a stretch of reserve forest with a monoculture of khadai trees. The former royal hunting lodge also lies in the reserve forest, beside a lake. It has been abandoned, but makes for a nice picnic spot — though it is not advisable to visit the area after dark. You can also picnic on the rocky banks of the pretty Jamuni River.

Jahangir Mahal

and  was named after the Mughal Emperor Jahangir. There are several other structures around the mahal, including a fort, a palace, cenotaphs in the town, and another palace referred to as the Collector’s Office, which has been turned into a state museum. The palace is an impressive structure.  Heavy yet light, climbing three storeys high with apartments topped with domes and hanging balconies, it’s a fetching mix of Indo-Islamic architecture. Note the two elephants gracing its eastern entrance and the crouching male sculptures on the canopied kiosks gracing the roof. The last, according to some, represent images of the architects or their patron gods.

Orchha Fort Complex

Paryatan Bhawan, Bhadbhada Road,Orchha Orchha, Madhya Pradesh, India Jahangir Mahal was built in the 17th century by Raja Bir Singh Deo

Orchha Fort Complex is located on an island on River Betwa, with a number of palaces to tour within it. This palace possesses the glorious past and mythological attachments and is the only place where Lord Rama is worshipped as a king and not as a god. The statue of Rama inside the Rama Raja Temple was brought from Ayodhya by Madhukar Shah, one of the Bundela rulers. The way to Orchha Fort Complex is through a multi-arched bridge and it has three palaces set in an open quadrangle. The most noteworthy of the palaces within Orchha fort complex are Raj Mahal, Jahangir Mahal and Rai Parveen Mahal.

structure. The palace has been designed to match the height of the trees in the surroundings, complete with beautifully landscaped gardens of Anand Mahal, featuring octagonal flower beds and elaborate water supply system.

Ram Raja Temple

Orchha, Madhya Pradesh, India The Raj Mahal was built in the 17th century by Madhukar Shah, who was the religious predecessor of Bir Singh Ju Deo. The palace is situated to the right of the quadrangle, and features plain exteriors, crowned by chhatris, which give way to interiors adorned with exquisite murals, that are boldly coloured and depict a variety of religious themes. The Jahangir Mahal was built by Raja Bir Singh Ju Deo in the 17th century. The palace was built to commemorate the visit of Emperor Jehangir to Orchha. The strong lines of the palace are counterbalanced by delicate chhatris and trellis work, which on the whole convey an effect of extraordinary richness. The Rai Parveen Mahal is a low, two-storeyed brick

Ram Raja Temple , commonly known as Orchha Temple, receives devotees all round the year. It is the only temple in the entire country where Lord Rama is worshipped as a king inside a palace. The idol of Lord Rama inside the temple has a sword in his right hand and a sword in the other, which is seen very rarely.
