2. Rationale for the module and its links with other modules OUIL505 ILLUSTRATION - APPLIED ILLUSTRATION will encourage students to develop their own specialist creative concerns within the field of Illustration in response to selected/negotiated briefs and an increasingly independent approach to workshop and studio activities. The module will provide the opportunity to explore self-determined areas of focus appropriate specialist professional practices including publishing, editorial, character, product, packaging and promotion across print and screen based delivery. Individuals will be encouraged to identify, establish and explore the professional, social and creative context of their work in relation to broader areas of Graphic Design and the creative industries. The module will run concurrently with OUIL501 Context of Practice and OUIL502 PPP2 Creative Industries. Learners will be encouraged to consider the impact of professional and theoretical concerns in the development and contextualisation of practical skills and technical understanding in preparation for study at Level 6 of the programme.

3. Aims of the module The aims of this module are: To identify, explore and develop areas of practical, technical and conceptual research in order to produce a body of creatively/professionally relevant work. To develop specialist knowledge of individual creative concerns and independent approaches to the investigation of Illustration through self determined solutions to negotiated briefs. To develop a practical, theoretical and conceptual understanding of illustration and its effective application to individually identified design problems. To embed an awareness of the social, cultural, ethical and commercial roles of illustration and their relationship to an increasingly individual creative practice. To develop professional level presentation/communication skills through the selection and use of appropriate content and media.

4. Pre-requisite modules or specified entry requirements As required for entry to Level 5 of the programme.

5. Intended learning outcomes A. Knowledge and understanding At the end of the module, learners will be expected to: 5A7 - Demonstrate an informed understanding of issues relating to media, communication, audience and context through the delivery of solutions to brief led problems or clearly identified creative concerns.

Learning and teaching strategy May include: LECTURES/SEMINARS – to introduce module content, principles/theories and explore their relationship to studio practice. STUDIO WORKSHOPS/BRIEFINGS – to introduce and support the development of practical and conceptual approaches to problem analysis, idea generation and design development.

5A8 - Understand the potential and limitations of technologies and processes used in the production of illustration for 2d, 3d and/or 4d distribution.

PRIVATE RESEARCH & STUDY - to develop individual areas of interest and methods of self-evaluation appropriate to module content and personal development.

B. Cognitive skills At the end of the module, learners will be expected to:

Learning and teaching strategy May include: GROUP CRITIQUES – to develop understanding and skills in the critical analysis and evaluation of individual progress and peer feedback.

5B5 - Analyse and critically evaluate the impact of social, cultural, technological and/or ethical concerns on the development of solutions to problems relevant to individual creative concerns. C. Practical and professional skills At the end of the module, learners will be expected to: 5C6 - Explore and apply a range of appropriate practical and conceptual approaches to self-determined ideas, concepts, solutions/proposals in response to own identified intentions and relevant practices.

PROGRESS SURGERIES (INDIVIDUAL/GROUP) - to support the development of individual /group understanding of core themes, principles and practices in relation to module content and personal development. Learning and teaching strategy May include: PRACTICAL WORKSHOPS – to introduce and support the development of appropriate practical/technical skills appropriate to module content and outcomes. INDEPENDENT STUDIO DEVELOPMENT / DROP IN ACCESS - to develop individual areas of interest, practical skills and studio practices appropriate to module content and personal development.

5C7 – Produce technically competent and conceptually appropriate outcomes to identified problems through the selection and application of visual skills. D. Key transferable skills At the end of the module, learners will be expected to: 5D5 – Demonstrate the ability to plan and carry out a period of increasingly self-directed study through the appropriate use of workshop areas, studio activities and project management skills.

Learning and teaching strategy May include: GROUP CRITIQUES – to develop understanding and skills in the critical analysis and evaluation of individual progress and peer feedback. PRIVATE RESEARCH & STUDY - to develop individual areas of interest and methods of self-evaluation appropriate to module content and personal development.

6. Indicative content A programme of lectures, seminars and workshops will explore the practical, conceptual and technical skills appropriate to an increasingly specialist understanding of the role of the Illustrator as creative problem solver and visualizer. Learners will identify and negotiate briefs that will outline specific problems relating to the development, production and contextualisation of individually appropriate responses to contemporary and innovative applications of Illustration. Learners will be encouraged to develop their own creative voice and visual signature. Content may include: ● ● ● ● ● ●

Practical, technical and conceptual application of illustration for 2d, 3d and 4d media. The application of industry standard production methods, technologies and processes for the development and delivery of appropriate solutions to identified problems. The impact of content, audience, context and function on the investigation and selection of appropriate content, media and formats. Approaches to professional level brief analysis, project planning and resource management. Strategies for developing individual and collaborative responses to negotiated problems of visualisation, translation and communication. Strategic approaches to the proposal and investigation of product, range and distribution in relation to contemporary illustration and creative practice.

Delivery will combine oral briefings, lectures, individual and group work, studio based activities, workshop sessions, group critiques and evaluation. Progress will be supported by individual tutorials at key stages.

7. International dimension This module will introduce students to the global contexts of contemporary Illustration. Students will be exposed to a broad range of international practitioners operating within the creative print and digital design industries. Students will be encouraged to examine, research and develop an appreciation of internationally recognised production processes, methods, and formats as well as their potential audiences and contexts. 8. Assessment strategy, assessment methods and their relative weightings A PORTFOLIO OF WORK (including an Online Critical Journal) - to include evidence of the ability to effectively plan , carry out, document and evaluate the practical and conceptual development of appropriate solutions to set problems. Learners will need to evidence ongoing critical engagement with appropriate theoretical, conceptual and/or contextual source material. There should be written evidence of personal reflection and critical awareness when evaluating individual progress in relation to set briefs. - 100%
