S U M M A R Y

P a r a s i t o l o g i c a l e x a m i n a t i o n s were c a r r i e d o u t d u r i n g A p r i l to A u g u s t , 1987, w i t h 187 o u t - p a t i e n t s of t h e I M I P h o s p i t a l , l o c a t e d i n t h e c e n t e r of R e c i f e C i t y , and 464 i n h a b i t a n t s of s e v e r a l v i l l a g e s a r o u n d C a b o C i t y , 50 K m s o u t h e a s t of R e c i f e , P e r n a m b u c o , B r a z i l . A p p r o x i m a t e l y 7 1 % of t h e I M I P p a t i e n t s a n d 92% of the C a b o i n h a b i t a n t s were i n f e c t e d w i t h at l e a s t o n e s p e c i e s of i n t e s t i n a l p a r a s i t e . T h e r e w a s m i n i m u m d i f f e r e n c e i n t h e p r e v a l e n c e r a t e of T r i c h u r i s t r i c h i u r a b e t w e e n two a r e a s , w h e r e a s the p r e v a l e n c e r a t e s of A s c a r i s l u m b r i c o i d e s , h o o k w o r m s , S t r o n g y l o i d e s s t e r c o r a l i s , S c h i s t o s o m a m a n s o n i and E n t a m o e b a h i s t o l y t i c a w e r e h i g h e r i n t h e i n h a b i t a n t s of t h e C a b o C i t y area. O n l y G i a r d i a l a m b l i a w a s m o r e p r e v a l e n t i n t h e o u t - p a t i e n t s of I M I P h o s p i t a l . INTRODUCTION A n a n a l y s i s of t h e a n n u a l s t a t i s t i c s o n the population in northeast Brazil demonstrated

I n t h e p r i m a r y e x p e r i m e n t , as s h o w n i n F i g . 2, the s p e c i f i c i t y and s e n s i t i v i t y of our E L I S A was evaluated. S e r u m s a m p l e s from 17 c a s e s w i t h c o n f i r m e d a m o e b i a s i s and 30 healt h y J a p a n e s e s t u d e n t s w e r e d i l u t e d 200 t i m e s and e x a m i n e d b y our E L I S A m e t h o d . S i n c e m e a n a b s o r b a n c e v a l u e of the n e g a t i v e c o n t r o l s was 0.033 ± 0.012, the u p p e r l i m i t (cut-off v a l u e ) of the a b s o r b a n c e of n e g a t i v e c o n t r o l s was c a l c u lated to b e 0.1 b y m u l t i p l y i n g the m e a n absorb a n c e v a l u e b y 3. T h e a b s o r b a n c e of p o s i t i v e c o n t r o l s e r a i s o l a t e d f r o m 17 J a p a n e s e p a t i e n t s w i t h a m o e b i c l i v e r a b s c e s s and c o l i t i s w a s far a b o v e t h i s v a l u e (0.280 to 1.500).
