For grade 10 and 11 courses provincial exams are worth 20% of your final grade. For grade 12 courses provincial exams are worth 40% of your final grade. Many courses have the option of writing a provincial exam. You may choose to opt out of these exams, however it is important to remember that some postsecondary institutions require exam scores for entrance. Writing exams also means you could qualify to win provincial scholarships.

Understanding Your Provincial Exams In order to complete requirements for your Dogwood Diploma you are required to write 5 mandatory exams. On your transcript your final grade will reflect a blended mark. .



School Completion Certificate The British Columbia School Completion Certificate is awarded to students who meet the goals of their educational program other than graduation. . Using the Stikine Planning Protocol, the school based team will determine the goals of the student for achievement of a School Completion Certificate. All students will have a minimum of three goals addressing academic and or social areas which have been determined significant for the students success by the school based team. The student planning protocol must be completed by September 30,of the year the student intends on school completion and submitted to the Director of Instruction by the Principal for School Board approval.

PASSPORT TO SUCCESS Welcome to your passport to success. It is important that you understand your graduation requirements and that you don’t miss graduation because of a technicality. Over the next few years there are certain courses you are required to take as well as provincial exams that must be written to satisfy dogwood graduation requirements. You are required to obtain 80 credits over three years the equivalent to 20 four credit courses. In BC most required courses earn 4 credits per course. Some elective courses may run for shorter time periods and will only earn 2 credits. It is important to examine your total credits often to ensure that you are on the correct path to graduation. In earning your graduation credits, there are certain ministry requirements that all graduates must follow. Of your 80 required credits, 48 must be obtained from required courses, and 28 may be obtained from elective courses. Of your 80 credits you must also obtain 16 of those credits at a grade 12 level mandatory or elective courses. You are also required to write 5 mandatory provincial exams, with the possibility of others some required some optional. Courses that have required provincial exams will appear on your transcript with a blended mark. This represents the combined total of your school grade and your exam result, the exam counting for 20-40% of your total score. Provincial exams may be written a maximum of two times before you are required to take the course over again. It is important to talk with school staff in these cases as extra support may be offered. Don’t forget that post-secondary institutions often require you to complete specific courses when entering into certain programs. Careful planning will ensure that you have all
