Book Review

Pediatric Rheumatology Editors: Helen E Foster, Paul A Brogan Edition: Second edition, 2018 Publisher: Oxford University Press, UK ISBN: 9780198738756 Pages: 592 Price: Not mentioned Pediatric rheumatology has seen major advances over the last two decades. Our clinical approach to several common rheumatological disorders in children (e.g., juvenile idiopathic arthritis and lupus) has undergone paradigm shifts and this has impacted patient care in a big way. Further, with the advent of biologics, the pediatric rheumatologist now has access to powerful therapeutic agents that are potentially curative. The second edition of “Pediatric Rheumatology” in the Oxford Specialist Handbooks in Pediatrics series edited by Drs. Helen Foster and Paul A. Brogan covers some of these exciting advances in a concise and clear manner. The contributors are well‑known experts in their field. The contents of the handbook are arranged in 10 sections. It lays adequate emphasis on clinical skills, nuances of musculoskeletal examination, and provides a primer on the pediatric Gait, Arms, Legs, and Spine examination. Newer examination techniques such as thermography and nailfold capillaroscopy have also been covered at length. Similarly, there is a ready reckoner on important issues like vaccination in rheumatology practice. Common procedures like intra‑articular injections have been detailed carefully. The emerging role of biologics in pediatric rheumatology has been given the importance that it deserves. The chapter format is easy on the eye and the flow charts provide clarity and lucidity. The authors have put in efforts to annotate the most recent guidelines on diagnosis and treatment wherever these are available.

This handbook is comprehensive yet concise and would serve as a handy and quick reference point in the clinic. It would be useful not only for pediatric rheumatologists but also for trainee pediatricians, nurses, and multidisciplinary therapists. The authors need to be congratulated for their efforts.
