Pharmaceutical Chemistry – The focus is on the chemical synthesis, physical properties, manufacture, and formulation of medicines. Medicinal Chemistry – A narrower field than pharmaceutical chemistry because its focal point is the chemistry of drugs, from new medicines to illicit substances. Pharmaceutical chemistry, on the other hand, studies drugs and drug discovery, and also covers the process of taking drugs to market. According to the American Chemical Society, medicinal chemistry blends synthetic organic chemistry, biochemistry, and pharmacology. Pharmacology – Medicinal drugs, and effects on the body. The study of drugs. It involves examining the interactions of chemical substances with living systems, with a view to understanding the properties of drugs and their actions, including the interactions between drug molecules and drug receptors and how these interactions elicit an effect. Pharmacy – Management and dispensing of medicines. A place where a licensed pharmacist legally dispenses drugs. Analytical chemistry in a compounding pharmacy is used for quality control, exact strength and dosage forms, flavors, for ingredients excluded from medications due to allergies, etc. The type, extent, and depth of analytical techniques varies somewhat between the fields of pharmaceutical science. They may include titrimetric methods; spectroscopic methods (UV, IR, NMR, atomic, MS, HRMS); chromatographic; thin-layer chromatographic; HPLC; GC; capillary electrophoresis; x-ray structure determinations; gravimetric; as well as various chemical analytical techniques.
