4. AC H I E VE M E NT S & R E SE AR C H I NT E R E ST S Philippe Lalanne is Directeur de Recherche (DR1) at CNRS and is an international expert in nanoscale electrodynamics. He was first involved in Optical Information Processing in the group of Pierre Chavel at l’Institut d’Optique. In 1995, he spent a sabbatical year in the group of G.M. Morris, at the Institute of Optics in Rochester. Since then, he is involved in computational electrodynamics, subwavelength diffractive optics, photonic crystals, microcavity, plasmonics and metamaterials. He has solved a long-standing problem associated to the convergence of Fourier expansion methods in grating theories [JOSAA 13 (1996)], has launched new and powerful tools in computational electrodynamics [JOSAA 18 (2001)], has first explained the two main physical mechanisms used in light confinement in ultrasmall photoniccrystal cavities [Nature 429 (2004)], has evidenced the importance of quasi-cylindrical waves in the optical properties of subwavelength metallic surface [Nature Phys. 2 (2006)], to further elaborate a microscopic theory of

the extraordinary optical transmission, apparently closing the debate on the role of plasmons in this phenomenon [Nature 452 (2008)]. He has co-authored about 110 publications in peer-reviewed journals (h=36, above 600 citations per year, ISI web of science data), has provided more than 50 invited talks in conferences and workshops. He is a recipient of the Bronze medal of CNRS, the prix Fabry de Gramont of the Société Française d’Optique; he is a fellow of the IOP, OSA and SPIE and was Carl Zeiss visiting Professor at Jena in 2010. He is currently working on all-solid-state sources for non classical emission of light and plasmons, on the design and characterization of new metamaterials at optical frequencies, and on the study of loss compensation techniques for plasmonic and metamaterial devices.
