Prayers to the Holy Spirit

Prayer to the Holy Spirit composed by St Josemaria Escriva in 1934 Come, O Holy Spirit! Enlighten my mind to know your commandments; strengthen my heart against the snares of the enemy; inflame my will. I have heard your voice; I don’t want to harden my heart and resist, saying ‘Later..., tomorrow.’ Nunc coepi! Now I begin, in case there is no tomorrow for me. O Spirit of truth and wisdom, Spirit of understanding and counsel, Spirit of joy and peace! I want whatever you want. I want it because you want it, I want it however you want it, I want it whenever you want it...

Come O Holy Spirit

VENI, Sancte Spiritus

Come O Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful, and enkindle in them the fire of your love.

VENI, Sancte Spiritus, reple tuorum corda fidelium, et tui amoris in eis ignem accende.

V/. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created, R/. And you shall renew the face of the earth.

V. Emitte Spiritum tuum et creabuntur; R. Et renovabis faciem terrae.

Let us pray. O God, you have taught the hearts of the faithful by the light of the Holy Spirit; grant that by the same Spirit we may be always truly wise, and ever rejoice in his consolation. Through Christ our Lord. R/. Amen.

R. Amen

VENI SANCTE SPIRITUS Sequence of the Mass of Pentecost

Come Holy Ghost Creator come from thy bright heavenly throne. Come take possession of our souls and make them all thy own

Veni, Creator Spiritus, mentes tuorum visita. Imple superna gratia quae tu creasti pectora

Come Holy Spirit, Lord of Light, from the clear celestial height, thy pure beaming radiance give

Veni, Sancte Spíritus, et emítte cælitus lucis tuæ rádium.

Thou who art called the Qui diceris Paraclitus, Altissimi Paraclete, best gift of God above; donum Dei, fons vivus, ignis, the living spring, the living fire, caritas, et spiritalis unctio.

Come, thou Father of the poor, come with treasures that endure, come, thou light of all that live!

Veni, pater páuperum, veni, dator múnerum, veni, lumen córdium.

sweet unction and true love. Thou who art sevenfold in thy gifts, finger of God’s right hand; his promise, teaching little ones to speak and understand.

Tu septiformis munere, digitus paternae dexterae, tu rite promissum Patris, sermone ditans guttura.

O guide our minds with thy blest light, with love our hearts enflame, and with thy strength which ne’er decays, confirm our mortal frame.

Accende lumen sensibus, infunde amorem cordibus, infirma nostri corporis, virtute firmans perpeti.

Far from us drive our deadly foe, true peace unto us bring; and through all perils lead us safe beneath thy sacred wing.

Hostem repellas longius, pacemque dones protinus, ductore sic te praevio, vitemus omne noxium.

Through thee may we the Father know, through thee the eternal Son; and thee, the Spirit of them both, thrice blessed Three in One.

Per te sciamus da Patrem, noscamus atque Filium, teque utriusque Spiritum credamus omni tempore.

All glory to the Father be, with his co-equal Son; the same to thee, great Paraclete, while endless ages run. Amen.

Amen

Thou of all consolers best, thou the soul’s delightful guest, dost refreshing peace bestow.

Consolátor óptime, dulcis hospes ánimæ, dulce refrigérium.

Thou in toil art comfort sweet, pleasant coolness in the heat, solace in the midst of woe.

In labóre réquies, in æstu tempéries, in fletu solácium.

Light immortal, light divine, visit now these hearts of thine, and our inmost being fill.

O lux beatíssima, reple cordis íntima tuórum fidélium.

If thou take thy grace away nothing pure in man will stay; all his good is turned to ill.

Sine tuo númine, nihil est in hómine nihil est innóxium.

Heal our wounds, our strength renew, on our dryness pour thy dew, wash the stains of guilt away.

Bend the stubborn heart and will, melt the frozen, warm the chill, guide the steps that go astray.

Thou on us who evermore thee confess and thee adore, with thy sevenfold gifts descend. Give us comfort when we die; give us life with thee on high; give us joys that never end. Amen.

Amen.
