24–18 months before starting business school

18-12 months before starting your MBA program:

5 Research career paths and determine short and long-term goals.

5 Gather school information and develop a target MBA list. Consider factors such as location, reputation in particular subject areas, length and size of program, learning style, area of interest, and demographics.

5 Gain experience in the industry and function that will best further your long-term career goals. Develop your people & project management skills. 5 Consider getting involved in activities outside of work, including professional organizations and volunteering activities that are closely related to your future career work. 5 Refine your career goals, and talk to colleagues and supervisors who have gone to different business schools.

5 Brainstorm for your essays: strengths and weaknesses, accomplishments and failures,motivations for business school, short and long-term career goals. 5 Provide recommenders with all information needed to write great letters. 5 Request transcripts from schools.
