The No Card, Card Trick by Simon Beckett Presentation and Effect: The performer starts his patter "You have seen or heard of many ways in which a performer can ascertain what cards have been selected by his audience. I have developed a science which gives me 100% accuracy without seeing a card, touching a card, in fact, without using any cards at all. I would like you to participate in this demonstration, and I hope this will entertain and give you something to think about! Now Simply follow my instructions. Ready? I want you to think of any card in the deck, got one? Good now double its value If it's an ace count it as one, two as two, etc., up to ten. If you think of a jack the value is eleven, Queen is twelve, and King is thirteen. Now, after doubling its value, add one and multiply this total by five You done that? Good! Right now do this

a spade, add nine to the total; if it is a club, add six; if a heart, add eight; if a the diamond add seven. As soon as you have your answer tell me the number you have in your mind but of course not the card you are thinking of, Ill do that part hopefully." The Spectator says “74” You say, "Your total is 74; then the card you thought of was the 6 of spades. That is correct, you say? They answer “YES” Another spectator has 131, and he thought of the queen of clubs. Another called out 82 was thinking of a 7 of diamonds. You are correct everytime without failure, in fact if you get two or more thinking of the same card, really milk it for all it’s worth!!! It does happen, a lot more than you would think it does!

The Secret: The final total announced by the spectator will give the performer the clues to both suit and value of the selected cards. If the total ends in 1, remember that it will be a club; if it ends in 2, it will be a diamond; if it ends in 3 will be hearts, and if it ends in 4 will be spades.

The first number, or the first 2 numbers minus 1, determines the value of the card.

For example, the number that the first spectator called was 74, and this proves to be the 6 of Spades (doubling its value made it 12, adding 1 made it 13, and multiplying by 5 gave him 65. Adding 9 for spades gave a final total of 74.) The last number being a 4 indicates that the selected card is a spade. A further example: the value of the second card called was 131. The final 1 indicates a club; The first 2 numbers are 13(minus 1 makes 12, and 12 means the Queen); therefore, the card is the queen of clubs. To be certain, when you start your demonstration, impress upon your audience with the idea of concentrating on the selected card and also to listen to your instructions. It is also important to make it plain that the ace counts as 1, 2 as 2, etc., up to 10, after which the jack counts as 11, queen as 12, and the king as 13. You can vary the presentation in a mixed group by asking the ladies, for example, to think of hearts and diamonds, and the men, spades and clubs. Using this system--if a lady calls out a number, you will know that the selected card will be either hearts or diamonds. This effect can be done with as many people as you like. You can perform it with many people at the same time getting them to call out their numbers and as they do you just tell them their thought of card. It is the speed when doing it for a group of people that is impressive, it is also useful for leading into a mind reading demonstration, you could indeed even state after performing this trick then that maybe if could be solved with maths, then go into another mentalist routine that would make this seem even more impossible , thus shelving the idea that it could have been maths….. The history of this trick is really unknown but a mention of Blackstone would be disrespectful if we did not mention his name as a credit.

I hope you like this and it gives you much fun performing it whether it be in person via the phone or even via a text message or an email If the instructions seem a little complex, simply write or print out the formula and the code for the suits and glue it to the side of a card box. In fact why not glue it if you can’t remember it to the side of a card box that contains an Invisible deck and you can then say you knew that they would have picked the

card they did as there is one card face down in the pack…then take out the invisible deck and BANG! You nail them on 2 levels…..Believe me this kills.

Think outside the box.

The Vision Quest

Listen to this for an effect A deck of cards is shuffled and a card removed the spectator does not look at it at all! After quickly very quickly flicking through the deck the card is revealed and the magician is correct! The Spectator then cuts the deck and selects a card and replaces it in the deck again it is found by the magician within a second or two! Finally the deck is cut and a card taken out it is revealed and the magician now reveals the rest of the cards one by one to the astonished spectators.

Effect 1: Vision Quest The cards are mixed up. A card is removed from the deck. The magician passes through the deck briskly and names the missing card. Effect 2: Theft of Thought The magician glances at the deck and memorizes it. A card is placed by the spectator into the middle of the deck. The deck is then cut several times. The magician finds the one card out of order. Effect 3: Devils Tower The deck is cut several times again. The spectator cuts to the middle and turns over one card. The magician looks at that card and calls out the values of the rest of the deck. How about the fact that you’ll be able to perform a memorized deck routine for your audience without any memorization?

Does it use marked or special cards? No. You can use any deck to perform the routine. Does it use a stacked deck? Yes, but not one you’ll have to remember. WHAT!?*!

Theft of Thought the effect! I have always been interested in the way spectators perceive mind readers, cold readers, psychics and magicians and their abilities. How much do they attribute to mind power or sheer skill and how much to devious devices up the sleeves of the magicians or the psychics? In my opinion, people tend to think that some of us possess abilities that border on the super-normal. Some magicians may argue that this is a failure. If people attribute natural causes to our magic, then we’ve failed to convince them that we’re supernatural. I strongly disagree with these views. After all, our goals should be to entertain and not to start a religious cult. Some magicians forget that magic is still entertaining when audiences know it’s not real. To be honest, that’s what makes it more entertaining. I mean do you really think that the lady that was cut in half by the magician was really cut in half or the elephant really disappeared or even that certain mind readers really can read your mind and tell you what to do? The Theft of Thought routine should not presented as a “magic” trick. One should offer it as a demonstration of your incredible mental abilities and sexual prowess! Ok I lied about the latter but if it works for you then so be it, and tell me HOW!!!!

Everything you show your audience could conceivably be done by someone with extreme powers of memorization and calculation. Like any skill, the goal is to entertain them by demonstrating some amazing ability you’ve trained yourself in over many years of practice. The effects in the routine are laid out in a particular order. They’re set up in a way that builds to an extremely strong climax. They’re laid out in an order in which you really would demonstrate your amazing skills and power of memory.

First you show them that you can detect which card is missing from a deck by taking one look through the cards. Second, you explain that you have managed to memorize the cards and can now spot which card is out of sequence. Finally, you have a spectator cut the cards and turn over one card. You look at that card and then name the rest of the cards in the deck. By the third effect you’ll have created the illusion that you must be a person with an incredible memory and indeed do know the entire deck. The real work is that they will never know how you did it as you did not use anything apart from your incredible mind power. So if you can force a card this routine will be worth its weight in gold!

The Method The method behind performing this effect is a stacked deck that you have memorized. Now before you go and delete this and think what have I done. Let me examine that you need not remember anything you do not already know! Sounds too good to be true ? Of course not! You already have the stack memorized. The stacked deck will be your phone number. You already know this number. To your spectator your phone number is a random sequence of digits. To you, it’s a ten or eleven digit number you can recall at any time without having to think about it. If you can call out the ten or eleven digits in your phone number, you’re all set to perform a few miracles. Using a phone, credit, bank account number as a way to “memorize” a series of numbers has been used in other stacked deck effects for years. The hope of this routine is to make the process as idiot proof as possible and to be honest if I can remember it and use it then it is as close to idiot proof as it can get!

What about suits?

What suits? Forget about the suits. The first effect of this routine sets up the idea that you can name the value and suit of any missing card in a deck of cards. After that, when you name cards you will just name the values. The audience will remember that you named the card and suit of the first card, so they will forget that after the first effect you just named values. Every time I perform this effect my spectators are left with the impression that I named the value and suit of every card. So relax and just enjoy the glory you will soon be basking in! The number We will use an example of 10 card for this stack if the number you are using is less or greater than 10 just adjust accordingly. Remember this stack is nothing that you don’t already know and it is not rocket science in anyway, it is simplicity itself.

The stack of ten cards is repeated so that you have a total of 20 cards. If your phone number repeats a digit more than twice you’ll want to use your mobile phone number or credit/bank account number instead or your home phone If your phone number is 01384-25796 the stack would be (use any suit you like – you don’t have to remember it) 0C 1H 3D 8S 4C 2H 5D 7C 9S 6H 0S 1D 3S 8D 4H 2C 5H 7S 9C 6C

Just remember that 1 = Ace 0 = Queens

You can use the Jacks and Kings instead of Aces and the Queens it is up to you I have tried to keep it as simple as possible in my explanation example. Making the stack Take your deck of cards and place the ten cards into the same order as the number you are using. Now deal your number face up onto the table. When you are finished you should have a face up stack of cards. Now go through the deck again and deal your number on top of that.

Place this stack of 20 cards on top of the deck. The top card should be the first digit of your number. In our example it is the Queen of Clubs (0C) = 0 in our number. Time to try it out Pick up the deck and call out the first number of your phone, credit, bank etc number you are using. Turn over the top card and lay it face up on the table. Recite the rest of your phone number as you turn over cards. Repeat once again. Impressed? You should be! What a great memory man/woman you are !!!! You just memorized a 20-card stack. Do you feel like Derren Brown or David Blaine? Well however you feel, I hope it’s good! Now do this, put the stack back on top of the deck. You’re ready to amaze and entertain the masses with your super memory power!

Part one The Vision Quest Take the deck of cards with the stack on top. Tell your audience that you would like to demonstrate a little bit of intellectual and mental dexterity. Do a few false shuffles and cuts if you want to. Then cut the deck and hand a spectator the bottom half of the deck DO NOT GIVE THEM THE STACK! Ask them to mix their half of the deck. Cut your cards several times but don’t shuffle them. Let them shuffle their cards to their heart’s content. Tell them to look at their cards and make sure that they’re mixed up and they are happy with the state of play up to now. As they do this, look at your cards. Cut your cards so that

your cards are back in the 20 number stack ( if you are worried about losing the stack order while cutting or finding where you started use a crimp or a double thickness card, though I doubt you will need anything like this as it is so simple) The one exception is put one card on top of your stack a card that is not in your stack. i.e a jack or a king in our examples Remember this card. You’re going to force this card on the spectator. For demonstration purposes we’ll say it’s the King of clubs Take the spectator’s stack and place it on top or under your stack depending on what kind of force you want to use. I place their stack on top of my stack so I can do a Classic force. If I wanted to use a slip cut force I’d place their stack under mine.

Force the card you looked at on the spectator. Tell them not to look at it. Have them put it into their pocket, bag, a card box or even sit on it but DO NOT LOOK AT IT. Cut the cards a couple times do a false shuffle if you want to. Now explain that you are going to find their card by going through the cards one-by-one and looking for whichever card is missing. Ask them to try this with you. This is important VERY IMPORTANT. It will show your spectator just how difficult it is. Sometime you may get a spectator tell you what the missing card is! If this happens best thing to do is head for the hills ☺Only joking! End the trick if you like there, as that is a miracle that will just not happen! Or turn congratulate your spectator and move onto the second effect.

Anyway this is how you show the cards Holding the deck face down, turn over the top card and place it face up on the table. Repeat with the next card. Start slow with the first couple cards. Then go really quickly. You’ll actually watch the spectator’s face go completely blank as they try to keep track of the cards.

They will give up and look up at you. Smile and keep dealing cards down. While you do this, keep track of where your stack starts. That is all you have to worry about. You already know the name of their card. The rest is just acting and good old magicians charm! Once you’ve dealt all the cards on to the table you’re going to reveal their card like this (assume for the moment you forced the King of clubs)

Revealing the card “There are only 51 cards here. Which means you did pick a card. But I guess we already knew that. Anyway I counted 25 black cards and 26 red cards. That means the missing card is Black. There were only 12 Clubs so that means it was a Club. I’m pretty sure I only saw three Kings. So that would make your card the King of Clubs. Take a look.” WOW you are correct! Just look at their faces! While they take out the missing card, pick up the deck and cut the 20-card stack to the top, the fact they are taking the card creates the perfect misdirection to do this. Also no one knows what is going to happen next and they will be pretty much amazed at the fact you got the card correct! Smile sweetly and get ready to go onwards with effect two

The Theft of Thought

Part two

Theft of Thought You’ve laid out the bones for your routine and now you’ve offered the first miracle on your way to build your reputation of a miracle worker. The next step is to take it up a gear or two. The 20-card stack should be on top of the deck. Explain to your audience that while you were looking for the missing card you managed to get a pretty good idea of the order of the whole deck. You’d like to try to demonstrate this by seeing if you can find one card that’s been moved WITHIN the deck itself. Spread the cards and have the spectator take a card from the bottom half (not from your stack). Tell them to look at the card. Ask them to return the card. Start spreading the top 20 cards so they put their card into the stack. Ask them to cut the cards. Cut the deck a couple times yourself (this rules out that you counted the position of the card). Turn the cards face up and towards yourself and look for your stack. You’re going to look for the one card that is out of place in your stack. Once you find it, put it face down on the table. If you have two identical values in a row and one of them is their card, ask them to name the suit. Place that card face down on the table. This will look like a “hit” because it only looked like you were confirming what you already knew. Cut the stack to the top. Ask the spectator to turn over the face down card. As they do this, cut the cards in half so the stack now starts at approximately 26th or 27th from the top.

Part Three The Devils Tower

This is the closer. This is the bit that hits them like a steam train and leaves them breathless at your mental abilities and general sexiness! This is where you become kind of scary but not in a Brian Gill way! ( Those in the know will know what I am on about those that don’t prepare yourselves for him!) Set the deck on the table (the stack now starts at the middle). Ask a spectator to cut the deck exactly in half and set the top aside. They’ll either cut a couple cards above or a couple cards below where the stack starts (or exactly there). Either way is fine. Pay close attention to how deep they cut. If it looks like a little below where the stack starts you’re fine. If they cut a little bit above, tell them to move a couple cards to make the stacks even. Have them turn over the top card. Chances are this will be either the first or second card of your stack. Tell them the next value in your stack. Have them turn over the next card. If it matches, skip the next paragraph. If you get it wrong, say “I think we maybe one or two cards off. I believe the next card is (name the first card in your stack). Turn over the next card.” This should be the first card in your stack (provided the deck was cut evenly). If you miss again, have them turn over another card. If you misjudged their cut you might have to go a couple more cards. (Put the blame on the cards not being cut exactly). Remember this is memory work not magic so the spectator will not be any the wiser if you get it wrong to start with tell them you are getting the feel for the cards!

PROVIDING YOU DID GET IT RIGHT CARRY ON FROM HERE! Call out the remaining numbers of the number you are using (in our example my phone number),and let the spectator turn over the cards. Stop after a few and in one hand pick up the cards the spectator was dealing from. In the other hand gather the face up cards on the table. Place them face down under the packet that has the rest of your stack (after the next step this will make it look like you named every card in that pile). Look straight at the spectator and call out the next

value. Turn that card over and throw it face up on the table. Race through the rest of the stack. When you reach the end of your stack reach for the other face down packet, but don’t actually pick it up. Say, “I could go through these, but I think we have done enough”. It also can get a little boring for the spectator for you to keep going through the entire deck, I personally find that after 15 cards I will stop as the spectators cannot believe it and then maybe ill do a few more laughing and joking just to prove I do know the order of the deck. Note: You can reset the stack as you gather up the cards.

Final Thoughts This effect is all about theatre. There’s only one genuine sleight and that’s a simple force. The entertainment comes from the presentation. You need to act like someone who really possesses this ability that you have honed your skills over the years, Younger people take note, tell them you learnt this from a Derren Brown, David Blaine, Uri Geller TV special!

Also avoid looking at the cards when you’re doing the revelations This is what will make it look like a feat of memory. Try not to go too quickly, but a brisk pace really hammers this effect home! Finally, I should warn you that if you do this effect a few times you’ll create a reputation that will follow you around for years to come….

Mentalists Translucent Clipboard The trend of having a see-through clipboard has introduced all kinds of clever products of late, many of which use old principles that range from waxed paper and graphite powder to a wide range of other interesting and exciting ideas. So with this in mind I thought about it and came up with this idea for creating this simple, effective, practical and inexpensive clipboard. Requirements 1) A clear plastic clipboard The clipboard must have absolutely no coloring and can be purchased from your local office supply store, such as Staples/ Office World 2) A box of white chalk 3) Some white paper

Method

Lie the chalk on its side and thoroughly saturate at lest two-thirds of one surface of the white paper and ensure that you work the chalk in deep into the paper. You'll end up with a lot of chalk powder so I recommended that you get a container and collect it as you can use it later whilst treating other sheets. The next step is to carefully dust off the back of the paper (this will take some experimenting) so that when you rub your hand across the chalked surface, you aren't getting it on your hands. This way, the spectator can fold the slip and place it into an envelope without noticing its condition. With the chalk side of the paper place against the clipboard's surface, anything written on the front side of the sheet will be transferred to the plastic surface but will essentially go unseen until you lay the board on top of or move it to some kind of dark/black background or a manila folder etc.

Handling Advice In my handling of it I leave a manila folder under the folder which is where I remove the paper from and as I replace the clipboard onto the folder after the paper has been removed from the clipboard I glimpse the info, and just casually set both the clipboard and folder aside.

Notes Clearing the board is super easy, just hold it against your leg or chest and give it a little rub and it's automatically ready for the next sheet of paper. Also don’t wear black or real dark colors if you use this cleaning method as it will show! Believe me this is just one of the best kept secrets there is!!! Use the knowledge well.
