FAQs The Arts of Fashion Foundation is the first American organization to bring together emerging fashion designers from around the world to share and celebrate creativity in fashion.

ARTS OF FASHION SYMPOSIUM The Arts of Fashion Symposium is an international gathering of creative minds that come together from different sides of the field, educational and professional, to celebrate fashion, encourage innovation and learn from each other. The Symposium hosts different events, including conferences with fashion professionals and the International Student Competition.

ABOUT THE ARTS OF FASHION The Arts of Fashion Foundation is a 501(c) (3), public, non-profit organization, linking both academics and professionals alike and is dedicated to fostering international cultural exchange through the creation of a variety of educational events meant to facilitate critical thinking among artists, designers, scholars and students.

GOAL OF THE FOUNDATION The primary focus of the Foundation is the continuous support of creativity and design in fashion and the arts linked to it.

A DECADE OF THE ARTS OF FASHION

MAJOR PARTNER: YKK

2011 marks the 10th anniversary of the Arts of Fashion Foundation. With the recent economic and social turmoil, the Foundation has decided to take a step back and return to the breath of fashion and its meaning. This year, the Foundation challenges the traditional format of fashion presentations. The result is an interactive fashion exhibition that provides the public with a chance to not just briefly observe the show from a distance but also the opportunity to have an intimate experience with the pieces. This fashion show/exhibition hybrid will utilize technology, photography and video to create and share a full fashion experience.

In 2007, YKK Corporation of America zipped into a relationship with the Arts of Fashion Foundation recognizing the importance of creativity in fashion. Five years later, the fruitful collaboration has become a true partnership where YKK contributes to the work of the Foundation to build a better future for the fashion world in the true spirit of the YKK slogan: Small Parts, Big Difference. www.ykk-usa.com

EPHEMERAL EXHIBITIONS OF FASHION 2011 International Fashion Student Competition: TENSION Sixty-five fashion design students from around the world have been selected to present their creations and compete for apprenticeship opportunities with prestigious fashion houses and scholarships to study with emerging designers. Their work will be showcased in three studios at SFAI during the Arts of Fashion Symposium from October 29 - 30, 2011. MasterClass: The Flying Tailor and The Modern Dancer During the summer, the Museum of Decorative Arts at the Louvre, in Paris, hosted the 2011 Arts of Fashion Summer MasterClass, a four-week study abroad session. Twelve students from around the world had the opportunity to work with three emerging designers and the prestigious haute couture pleating atelier Mister Lognon. SAN FRANCISCO IS BACK IN FASHION MODE

The Arts of Fashion Foundation will celebrate its 10th anniversary of supporting emerging designers with a truly unique exhibition of fashion and the arts surrounding it Oct 29 - 30, 2011 [SAN FRANCISCO, CA - October 2011] - Join us for a truly inspiring fashion weekend to celebrate 10 years of the Arts of Fashion Foundation’s dedication to support innovative designs and cutting-edge fashion from emerging designers and students who are the true future of the fashion world. On Saturday, October 29th and Sunday, October 30th, the Arts of Fashion Foundation will invade the San Francisco Art Institute (800 Chestnut Street) for the the 10th annual Arts of Fashion Symposium and Premier International Fashion Design Student Competition. The event will feature fashion exhibitions, conferences and a unique runway installation on the campus. During these two days, the public will be able to come and view this rare showcase between 10AM - 6PM each day.

The Arts of Fashion Foundation – a San Francisco-based non-profit organization that supports young fashion design talent on a global scale – will return to San Francisco again this year to celebrate its 10th aniversary and host the annual educational symposium. At the start of a new decade, the Foundation has taken a step back to consider a potential change in the format of its traditional fashion event presentation. Like many at this time, the Foundation has felt the sting of the social and economic turmoil. Although going through a restrictive phase, it is committed to producing an even more creative event than ever before.

The Arts of Fashion Symposium, in the past, has been a five-day series of fashion events, including educational conferences, intensive MasterClasses and the main event: The Premier International Design Student Competition fashion show. The Foundation has again selected 65 students from around the world to create two silhouettes based on this year’s theme: TENSION. These looks will not only be exhibited in multiple spaces on the SFAI campus for attendees to view without time constraints but will also be shown on live models during a continuous 2-day unique runway presentation. Guest designers, industry professionals, fellow students, friends, family and the public will also have the chance to see the selected initial sketches along with the final garments. This new format will give more visibility to the work of the students and their portfolios creating a full fashion experience for visitors.

Always with a mind for the future, the Foundation continues to look forward and think creatively. Along with this revised format, there will be another dimension for new media added to the event. The importance of video and photography to the fashion industry is even more essential today than in the past. During the runway installation of the International Design Student Competition, there will be a space for video and photography creating a live visual extension to this ephemeral experience from other parts of the fashion

industry. The visual works produced from these photographers and videographers will come together at the culmination of the Arts of Fashion Symposium Awards Ceremony on Sunday afternoon along with the awarding of the winners amongst these emerging talents with tremendous potential.

For attendees, it will be an additional opportunity to network with industry professionals coming for the conferences. This year, The Foundation is fortunate enough to be hosting Mr. Steven Kolb, the CEO of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, who will participate in the Symposium and in a lecture during the Symposium’s Tandem-Series.

All exhibitions and lectures (Fashion.edu, CineToile-Series, and Tandem-Series) are free and open to the general public. Seating is very limited, so the Foundation highly recommends that those who plan to attend reserve seats in advance for $20. The Awards Ceremony, Awards Cocktail Reception and Farewell Party require a ticket for admittance. Tickets are available by visiting the Arts of Fashion website: Arts of Fashion Symposium Tickets
