Press Release “Safar” German-Afghan Concert Tour in the Hindu Kush International live video stream from Afghanistan! (Weimar/Kabul 22 August 2013) As part of the Safar project, three pop and jazz musicians from Germany will join five Afghan master musicians and their students on a concert tour through Afghanistan in August 2013. The concert on 27 August will be broadcast internationally via live audio and video stream by the European Broadcasting Union. Safar is a joint project between the Franz Liszt University of Music Weimar (HfM Weimar) and the Afghanistan National Institute of Music (ANIM) and the Aga Khan Trust for Culture in Afghanistan. The upcoming concert tour in Afghanistan is a follow-up to the tour that the above-mentioned musicians already gave throughout Germany in 2012, including performances in such cities as Berlin and Bonn. Many years ago traditional Afghan music enjoyed international attention. But with the rise to power of the Taliban this music was forbidden; musicians were driven out of the country and their instruments were destroyed. Luckily many of these older musicians have managed to survive, ensuring the survival of their art itself. They now pass down these traditions to the younger generations. This process has proven to be an arduous, but worthwhile, task. “With the Safar project we want to draw international attention to the cultural wealth of Afghanistan, whose image is shaped today unfortunately by terrorism and war,“ explained Philip Küppers, German project leader and assistant to the Chair of the Transcultural Music Studies Department of the HfM Weimar.
