MOTOWN: THE MUSICAL A BALCONY BENEFIT Welcome to the BALCONY on Broadway Benefit, a reception and special preview performance of Motown: The Musical. After having staged successful theatrical BALCONY events at Nixon’s Nixon in Greenwich Village and the God of Carnage performance in Albany, we decided to try our luck with a Broadway production. Now, with the assistance of Susan Lee and The Nederlander Organization, we are proud to present the Berry Gordy Story, Motown: The Musical. A special thanks to Kevin McCollum, producer of Motown: The Musical, the cast of the play and the creative team.

Diane Masters of BALCONY has organized this benefit and deserves special recognition as we have sold out of our allotted 130 tickets. At the same time, BALCONY gives special thanks to M3 Technology, sponsor of tonight’s reception at the Apsen Social Club. We are grateful to our business partner The Greater New York Chamber of Commerce, its Chair Cynthia DiBartolo and its President Mark Jaffe. Other prominent sponsors of BALCONY’s Motown Benefit include: General Contractors Association of New York, HSA Bank, NYSUT and the National Labor and Management Conference. We hope you enjoy the music, dancing and story of Motown: The Musical. Please keep dancing in the aisles to a minimum! But boogie down if you just can’t help it!! Hopefully BALCONY can return to Broadway in the future & make this an annual event. BALCONY CO-DIRECTORS

BALCONY: Finds Common Ground Between Business and Labor in New York BALCONY’s mission is to find common ground between business and labor, throughout New York State. BALCONY was founded in 2006 by Alan Lubin, former Executive Vice President of New York State United Teachers, and Bruce Ventimiglia, CEO of Saratoga Capital Management, to counter arguments by the New York State Business Council and similar groups, all of which routinely fight public spending and works to take revenue away from the state. BALCONY is co-chaired by Lubin, former New York State Senator Catherine Abate, currently CEO of the Community HealthCare Network, and Robert Hayes, Executive Vice President of Universal American Corp. Lou Gordon has served as BALCONY Director since its inception. BALCONY represents over 1,000 members, many of whom are labororiented business leaders, and has been a key player in major public policy debates. BALCONY’s relationship with its business members and elected officials makes it a strategic weapon for unions who need an ally in New York’s public policy discussions. “BALCONY was created to provide a voice of reason. It has successfully fought attempts to cut public spending in New York State, has pushed for funding of public projects, and has put pressure on state legislators to support tax hikes for the wealthy,” said Alan Lubin, BALCONY co-founder and co-chair and former Executive Vice President of New York State United Teachers.

WHAT PEOPLE SAY ABOUT BALCONY BALCONY is “breaking through the barriers and gridlock that sometimes separates business and labor in our state. In these especially challenging times, we urgently need a group like BALCONY that can bring key stakeholders together to share ideas and come up with solutions.”   New York State Comptroller Thomas Di Napoli.

“BALCONY has tirelessly advocated finding common ground between business and labor in a way that makes sense.” Arthur Cheliotes, President of CWA Local 1180.

“BALCONY has grown to have real influence, and create real focus to bring business and labor together in dialogue to try and find common goals and common solutions to those goals and problems.” William C. Thompson, Jr., former New York City Comptroller.

“BALCONY is a key partner of the General Contractors Association of New York in our efforts to advocate for the infrastructure funding for New York’s roads, bridges and transportation.” Denise Richardson, Managing Director, General Contractors Association of New York.

“BALCONY provides a solution to the challenges faced as we seek to build a consensus on critical issues of health care, infrastructure financing and education.” David Pollak, New York Director, Pegasus Capital Advisors.

“Business and Labor need to work together in order for New York to have a sound economy. BALCONY provides the framework for small business and labor to cooperate on issues such as health care, economic development, and the minimum wage. It’s good to know that our 20,000 plus business and civic leaders are well represented when it comes to discussing the   important issues of the day with NY Labor leaders!” Mark S. Jaffe, BALCONY Treasurer and CEO, Greater New York Chamber of Commerce. “BALCONY was a leading voice in the fight for a minimum wage   hike, and I’m confident that it will continue to advocate for a better minimum wage than what Albany recently included in its budget,” said Stuart Appelbaum, President of RWDSU.
