Primary Function: defines the psychological type. Develops early in life and is always the strongest function. Auxiliary Function: works in tandem with the primary function; complements its operations. Generally opposite attitude (extravert - introvert) of primary function. Third Function: opposite of auxiliary; often equally developed as auxiliary after mid-life. Inferior Function: sometimes called fourth function, or shadow function. Opposite of primary function; least developed, and often lowest score on psychological type tests.

Philip St. Romain Inner Marriage and Individuation A. Typological Development: General Principles 1. Primary and auxiliary functions developed by the age of 12 and are primary characteristics of the conscious personality, or Ego. 2. We all use 3rd and 4th functions, but they are less characteristic of Ego. 3. Attachment to any of the functions--especially primary and auxiliary--impedes development of the rest. 4. If we are uncomfortable with our 3rd and 4th functions, we are generally uncomfortable with others who consciously embody these functions. 5. Other people who embody 3rd and 4th functions can be teachers or mentors of how they work. B. Contra sexual Energies and Psychological Types 1. Every man has an unconscious feminine side Jung called the Anima. She appears as the feminine characters in his dreams, and carries feminine energies (yin) in males. 2. Every woman has an unconscious male side Jung called the Animus. He appears as the men in her dreams and carries masculine (yang) energies. 3. The third and fourth functions in men are closely bound up with the Anima; in women, they are communicated with the Animus. 4. A woman models how she develops and expresses her third and fourth functions on her father; a man models on his mother. Individuation: Life-long process of becoming psychologically whole. Involves the assimilation of unconscious energies by the conscious Ego--of the unconscious becoming conscious. In doing so, the unconscious Self-center and the Ego come to work together in harmony. The Ego must learn to assimilate and integrate the powers of the third and fourth functions, and the contra-sexual energies. C. Stages in the relationship between the Ego and the contra-sexual energies. (these developments and relationships show up in dreams) Men
