COURSE DESCRIPTION This course is an introduction to construction of buildings. It is designed primarily for students in Quantity Surveying and Estate Management. It focuses on the study of the following aspects of building construction; site preparation, construction of simple foundations, floor construction, walls, and general concrete works. As a practical oriented course, the focus is to impart understanding of the construction methods in the students in order to prepare them for other specialised applications to be encountered at higher levels. Topics to be covered include functional requirements and their design and construction requirements; types and methods of classification; component members and methods of construction of the selected elements and trade works in the building.

COURSE OBJECTIVES The objectives of this course are to:  introduce students to the substructure part, selected element and tradeworks in a building; and  provide students with the understanding of the methods and technologies involved in the construction of the selected aspects of building construction.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES / COMPETENCIES Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:  understand the various site preparation activities involved in building construction;  understand the use and explain the construction of various types of foundation in different site conditions;  understand the performance standards/functional requirements of floors, and the various methods of floor construction vis-a-vis the location and material used in construction;  understand the performance standards/functional requirements of walls and partitions in various locations in a building, methods involved on construction of brickwork and blockwork;  understand the material composition, operation, workability and use of concrete in building construction.

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS Attendance: It is expected that every student will be in class for lectures and also participate in all practical exercises. Attendance records will be kept and used to determine each person’s qualification to sit for the final examination. In case of illness or other unavoidable cause of absence, the student must communicate as soon as possible with any of the instructors, indicating the reason for the absence. Academic Integrity: Violations of academic integrity, including dishonesty in assignments, examinations, or other academic performances are prohibited. Students are not allowed to make copies of another person’s work and submit it as their own; that is plagiarism. All cases of academic dishonesty will be reported to the University Management for appropriate sanctions in accordance with the guidelines for handling students’ misconduct as spelt out in the Students’ Handbook. Assignments and Group Work: Students are expected to submit assignments as scheduled. Failure to submit an assignment as at when due will earn you zero for that assignment. Only under extenuating circumstances, for which a student has notified any of the instructors in advance, will late submission of assignments be permitted. Code of Conduct in Lecture Rooms and Laboratories: Students should turn off their cell phones during lectures. Students are prohibited from engaging in other activities (such as texting, watching videos, etc.) during lectures. Food and drinks are not permitted in the class and practical workshops.

Introduction and Course Overview

During this first class, the expectation of the students from the course will also be documented. Class meeting will also include introduction the site preparation in building construction, it's importance and varying types depending on the site conditions.

Introduction to site preparation

Class discussions will include site clearance, setting out practice and procedure, various types of excavation and the use and application of mechanical plants and equipment in the site preparation activities. Lectures will include elaborate discussions on construction methods and components of;  Strip foundation  Raft foundation  Pad foundation  Pile foundation

Building foundation

MID-SEMESTER TEST 7&8

Floor construction

Students will be introduced to the functional requirements and various types of materials used in floor construction, respective methods of constructions. These will include:  solid ground floors  raised timber floors

Walls and partitions in building

Lectures will include discussions on performance standards/functional requirements and component materials for wall construction. Further explanations will be on brickwork and blockwork, 4

bonding and pointing, e.t.c.

Concrete work in building

Students will be introduced to trade of concrete and it's relative importance and application in building construction process. Types of concrete will be explained to students - plain and reinforced (of different strength requirements).

Further discussions will include concrete material compositions and their respective characteristics, concreting operations and production process, workability, also reinforcement and bar bending schedule will be discussed with students. These weeks precede the final examination. At this time, evaluation will be done to assess how far the students’ expectations for the course have been met and further questions will be entertained.
