Remembering our founder John Wesley

M

ay 24th will be the 275 Anniversary of John Wesley’s conversion. The young pastor who founded the Methodist movement that spawned our beloved church. Wesley was a man of Christ, a visionary who saw personal piety and social holiness as the simple answers to living a life according to Jesus’ teachings. The famous "Aldersgate experience" of May 24th 1738, at a Moravian meeting in Aldersgate Street, London, in which he heard a reading of Martin Luther's preface to the Epistle to the Romans, and penned the now famous lines "I felt my heart strangely warmed". This transforming moment revolutionized the character and method of his ministry and so began the long, fruitful, amazingly productive ministry of John Wesley (1703–91). From his earliest days, Wesley had made up his mind to never be what he called “half a Christian”. During the next 52 years, he rode over 250.000 miles by horseback (averaging 4 hours per day, 7 days per week in a saddle). He preached an average of two sermons per day, answered immense correspondence, wrote a complete commentary on the bible, edited and published a Christian library in 50 volumes, wrote books on alternative medicine, book reviews on contemporary literature, read omnivorously, trained hundreds of men for the ministry, and gave pastoral oversight to an exploding movement. The doctrines which Wesley emphasized in his sermons and writings are prevenient grace, (Continued on page 2)

justifying grace, and sanctifying grace. It is important to clarify that these are not 3 different types of grace but rather 3 different ways we experience God’s grace, and the impact it has on our lives. Prevenient grace, or preceding grace is the grace that comes before our response of faith to God. God is active in our lives, wooing us as with His love with the hope that we will respond in faith to Him. When we turn to God and accept His love and forgiveness, we experience God’s justifying grace and we are made right with God. While the struggle with sin remains, it no longer reigns over our lives. Through God’s justifying grace, we are freed from the consequences of sin, that is separation from God and guilt over our actions. Therefore, we are able to move forward into the future in a right relationship with God. In that moment, God’s grace begins to sanctify us and He begins to transform us into a new person. The invitation we receive through God’s grace to Christian discipleship is to begin working on removing the sins that still control your life. We are all a work in progress. The Good News that our founder John Wesley taught thousands and thousands of people and he is telling you today, is that God is not done with you yet. You may not be today what you might be, ought to be, or even hope to be. But by the GRACE of God, you can become what He wants you to be!
