Resetting Maya’s Preference Files Maya 2013

Concept

Maya saves all the user-interface settings and preferences

• •

in a file on your hard drive The files are MEL (Maya Embedded Language) files,

• • • •

a specific programmable language used by Maya File extension is .mel

Some settings and preferences can be reset from within Maya For others, you must delete the preference files on your hard drive

Inside Maya • >Window >Settings/Preferences >Preferences

to set individual settings according to your preferences

• (More details on these settings in other tutorials) or still inside the Preferences window, •

>Edit >Restore Default Settings

This resets many of the settings,

but not all

Outside Maya • To completely reset all settings and preferences,

• •

You must delete the settings files on the hard drive The next time Maya starts up,

• •

it creates new settings files with default settings/preferences

The exact location of the files on your hard drive may vary

Check the autodesk.com site for the exact location

• • •

for your operating system

For example: Windows Vista:

\Users\\Documents\maya\2011\en_US\prefs

Mac OS X:

• •

Go into that folder

• • •

/Users//Library/Preferences/Autodesk/maya/en_US/2011/prefs

Delete all of the .mel files.

Exit Maya Restart Maya

It should restart with its default factory settings
