The Story This is the story of a world famous chocolatier, Willy Wonka, who decides to have a contest. He hides five Golden Tickets in five of his delicious candy bars, and whoever finds these tickets will win a free tour of the Wonka factory. In addition, these children will also win a lifetime supply of chocolate! Four of the five winning children are beastly, but the fifth winner is a likeable young man by the name of Charlie Bucket. As these children take the tour, they learn that must learn to follow Mr. Wonka's rules of the factory...or suffer the consequences.!

Wonka Trivia There have been two movies, two musicals, one stage play, a Swedish television show, several video games, and an opera based on Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. When Roald Dahl was a boy, there was a chocolate factory near his school. This is where he got the idea for Charlie and the Chocolate

Factory. In the 2005 film, Willy Wonka's cane was filled with actual Wonka candy. The original name of Roald Dahl’s book was Charlie’s Chocolate Boy, and it didn’t have the characters of Grandpa Joe or the OompaLoompas. In Roald Dahl’s original story there were seven children selected to go to Willy Wonka’s factory. The characters that were cut from the original were a conceited boy named Marvin Prune and a tattle-teller named Miranda Piker.

The Children This musical is about five children:

Augustus Gloop-A greedy boy.

Veruca Salt-A girl who is

spoiled by her parents.

Violet Beauregard-A girl who chews gum all day long.

Mike Teavee-A boy who does nothing but watch television.

and Charlie BucketThe hero.

The Adults The Candy Man-A candy vendor who sells Wonka’s candies. Willy Wonka-A candy maker who hasn’t been seen outside of his factory in many years. Mr. Bucket-Charlie Bucket’s father. Mrs. Bucket-Charlie Bucket’s mother. Grandpa Joe-Charlie’s grandfather who used to work for Mr. Wonka.

Grandma Josephine-Grandpa’s Joe’s wife. Grandpa George-Charlie’s hard-of-hearing grandfather. Grandma Georgina-Grandpa George’s wife. Phineous Trout-A news reporter. Mrs. Gloop-Augustus Gloop’s mother. Mr. Salt-Veruca Salt’s father. Mrs. Beauregarde-Violet Beauregarde’ s mother. Mrs. Teavee-Mike Teavee’s mother.

The Chorus As this is a musical, there is more than one chorus to help tell the story. A chorus is an organized group of singers and dancers that perform together at appropriate times during the play. A Chorus of Children-Charlie’s friends who just can’t stop eating sweets. A Chorus of Cooks-Who make sure Augustus Gloop is well-fed. A Chorus of Oompa-Loompas-The mysterious workers in Wonka’s factory. A Chorus of Squirrels-Who help prove that Veruca Salt is a bad nut.

Roald Dahl-The Writer Roald Dahl was born in Llandaff, Wales on September 13, 1916. After graduating from school and serving in the Royal Air Force, Dahl became a published writer in 1941. His first children’s story to be published was James and

the Giant Peach in 1961, and his second, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, was published in 1964. Before his death on November 23, 1990, three movies had been made based on his works: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971),

The BFG (1989), and The Witches (1990). On September 13, 2006 (the day that would have been Dahl’s 90th birthday), the first annual Roald Dahl Day took place across the world, with celebrations in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Holland. These celebrations continue even today.

Quintin Blake-The Illustrator Sir Quentin Saxby Blake was born in Sidcup, Kent on December 16, 1932. As a boy, he was influenced by an English teacher to become interested in literature, and his first drawings were published when he was 16 years old. After graduating from college, he studied at the Chelsea School of Art, and he worked for over twenty years at the Royal College of Art. He met Roald Dahl in the 1970’s, for whom he illustrated 18 books, and the two formed an ex-

traordinary illustrator/writer partnership. As of 2006, Blake had illustrated for over 320 book; 35 of which he wrote himself.
