Poe J. Lincoln Fenn Rights Available: All Languages Rights Sold: Audio 2013 Winner — Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award — Science Fiction, Fantasy, Horror It’s Halloween, and life is grim for twenty-three-year-old Dimitri Petrov. It’s the one-year anniversary of his parents’ deaths, he’s stuck on page one thousand of his Rasputin zombie novel, and he makes his living writing obituaries. But things turn from bleak to terrifying when Dimitri gets a last-minute assignment to cover a séance at the reputedly haunted Aspinwall Mansion. There, Dimitri meets Lisa, a punk-rock drummer he falls hard for. But just as he’s about to ask her out, he unwittingly unleashes malevolent forces, throwing him into a deadly mystery. As town residents begin to turn up gruesomely murdered, Dimitri must play detective in his own story and unravel the connections among his family, the Aspinwall Mansion, the female spirit, and the secrets held in a pair of crumbling antiquarian books. If he doesn’t, it’s quite possible Lisa will be the next victim. “A delightful, bravura piece of gothic pop…fans of Neil Gaiman and the aforementioned Buffy will be immediately taken, but there’s a literate edge to the pyrotechnics that makes for an unlikely and welcome marriage between the spook story and literature of altogether less ectoplasmic substance.” —Publishers Weekly

Terms of Enlistment The year is 2108, and the North American Commonwealth is bursting at the seams. For welfare rats like Andrew Grayson, there are only two ways out of the crime-ridden and filthy welfare tenements, where you’re restricted to 2,000 calories of badly flavored soy every day: You can hope to win the lottery and draw a ticket on a colony ship settling off-world, or you can join the service. With the colony lottery a pipe-dream, Andrew chooses to enlist in the armed forces for a shot at real food, a retirement bonus, and maybe a ticket off Earth. But as he starts a career of supposed privilege, he soon learns that the good food and decent health care come at a steep price . . . and that the settled galaxy holds far greater dangers than military bureaucrats or the gangs that rule the slums. The debut novel from Marko Kloos, Terms of Enlistment is a new addition to the great military sci-fi tradition of Robert Heinlein, Joe Haldeman, and John Scalzi. The next book in the series, Lines of Departure, will also be released in early 2014.

Speaking as an old sci-fi writer myself, I know how hard it is to do what Phillips has done . . . I’ve read Immune to its brilliant and completely satisfying end —so inventive and moving that I don’t want to miss a chapter of it . . . as good as any science fiction being written today.”—Orson Scott Card, on Immune (The Rho Agenda: Book Two) “The three books of the Rho Agenda trilogy (The Second Ship, Immune, and Wormhole) are a story that links a considerable amount of science with a thrilling storyline. . . . I highly recommend readers pack their imagination and go for a ride with The Rho Agenda.” —New York Times best-selling author Bob Mayer

His increased detachment from reality becomes a spiraling descent into rejection and desensitization to the horrors around him. Set among towering buildings, giant rolling planetary processing units, and vast forest terrains on several different worlds, this journey serves as a modern fable of warning and a fascinating exploration of an alternate world perhaps not so different from our own. This comic contains explicit content and is recommended for mature readers.

The Fracking King James Browning Rights Available: All Languages Rights Sold: Audio A novel about boarding school, hardcore Scrabble fanatics, and fracking—a new kind of environmental novel by a spokesman and chief strategist for Common Cause.

“My name is Winston Crwth and most people called me Win. The Crwths came to America from Wales a long time ago and most had the good sense to change their name to Crowther, Crow, or McWhorter. Crwth was ugly, awkward, and most of all boring because people assumed it must be a typo. Teachers who knew how to say things like prix fixe or !tong would stare at Crwth, shake their heads, and ask me to say my name. “’Crwth,’ I’d say, ‘it rhymes with truth.’ “‘Oh, so with a U?’ “‘No, it’s with a W…’” So begins The Fracking King, a playful and profound debut novel about a highschooler’s quest to bring the perils of fracking to the attention of the governor of Pennsylvania and the media. The hilarious peculiarities and personalities of boarding school life intersect with the world of competitive Scrabble in an utterly charming tour de force. It will appeal to environment-conscious readers of literary fiction, those who devour prep school narratives, and those who relish the supremely stylized work of Beckett and Nabokov.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: James Browning has an M.A from The Writing Seminars at Johns Hopkins University. His essays and nonfiction have been published in The Believer, The Village Voice, and in Split: Stories From A Generation Raised On Divorce (McGraw-Hill). As a spokesman and chief strategist for Common Cause, a government watchdog group with more than 400,000 members, he has been extensively quoted in The Washington Post, The Chicago Tribune, The Philadelphia Inquirer, and hundreds of other print and online outlets on the issues of political corruption and reform, in addition to numerous appearances on local TV and NPR. His work has been featured in Mr. Fox’s short film The Sky Is Pink, and he will appear in Renard Cohen’s documentary film Groundswell. On fracking, he is the author of “Deep Drilling, Deep Pockets,” a series of widely-publicized reports about the oil and gas industry’s campaign to get America to frack first, ask questions about the dangers of fracking later. He lives in Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania with his wife Elisabeth and their two sons.

It’s four (or more) books in one, a Pynchonesque treat: a bohemian satire, a campus comedy, a stoner’s reverie, a quadruple love story. Long’s wonderfully evoked storylines of young writers—each in a period of formation—collect around the search for one mysterious author—“the Tibetan David Foster Wallace,” who might in fact be a plagiarist. This delightful and complex literary novel is both a comic gem and a penetrating breakdown of the young literati. And Long’s more esoteric fancies come into play with a mysterious and possibly magical tome that someone lifts from a hip Berkeley bookstore… ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Dustin Long is the author of Icelander. He holds a Ph.D. in American Literature and teaches literature at a private institution in Manhattan. He lives in Brooklyn with his girlfriend and son. Praise for Icelander: “A giddy send-up of postmodern fiction . . . endearingly wacky.”—Laura Miller, Salon “A talented wordsmith. . . . Long aspires to the linguistic acrobatics of Nabokov and Pynchon.”—Booklist “A kind of Series of Unfortunate Events for adults. . . . It is writing born out of hysterical laughter and a lingering sense of childhood adventure.”—Los Angeles Times “Long’s first novel glimmers with comic brilliance.”—Montreal Mirror “Unlike any book you’ve read before. . . . good, albeit slightly absurd, fun.” —Calgary Herald

Incendiary Girls Kodi Scheer Rights Available: All Languages Rights Sold: Audio For fans of Karen Russell or Hannah Tinti, a debut collection of stories inspired by science, medicine, and the power of healing with a magical twist.

Incendiary Girls explores our baser instincts with vivid imagination and humor. In these stories, our bodies become a strange and unfamiliar terrain, a medium for transformation. For example, in “Fundamental Laws of Nature,” a doctor considers legacy, both good and bad, when she discovers her mother has been reincarnated as a thoroughbred mare. The infertile couple of “Primal Son” desperately wants a child, but although they finally get their wish, the baby isn’t recognizably human. In “When a Camel Breaks Your Heart,” a figure artist struggles to understand her lover’s culture as he morphs, quite literally, into an exotic animal. Finally, the title story, narrated by an angel, chronicles the remarkable life of a girl just beyond death’s reach. In Scheer’s hands, empathy and attachment are illuminated by the absurdity of life. Each character must struggle to balance emotion and lucidity from within worlds without precedent, where the rules of existence that we take for granted no longer hold true. When our bodies betray us, when we begin to feel our minds slip, when we are surrounded by suffering, how much can we embrace without going insane? From how much can we detach ourselves before losing our humanity? Scheer’s stories grapple with these questions in each throbbing, choking, heartbreaking moment. Praise for When a Camel Breaks Your Heart: “A beautiful, sad, hilarious, moving story about love, commitment, geopolitics, metamorphosis and a dromedary camel by a talented young writer.” —Daniel Wallace, author of Big Fish

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Kodi Scheer teaches writing at the University of Michigan, where she earned her MFA. She was awarded the Dzanc Prize for Excellence in Literary Fiction and Community Service. As a recent fellow of the Sozopol Fiction Seminars, she traveled to Bulgaria to engage with an international community of writers, translators, and readers. Her stories have appeared or are forthcoming in The Chicago Tribune, The Iowa Review, The Florida Review, Quarterly West, and Bellevue Literary Review. She also serves as writer-in-residence for the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Chase Us Sean Ennis Rights Available: All Languages Rights Sold: Audio For fans of Kevin Brockmeier or Justin Taylor, a poignant and inventive collection of coming-of-age stories by Tin House and Best New American Voices contributor Sean Ennis.

“Hearing about adults acting this way always amazed me. It was both frightening and reassuring. I always assumed at some point I would know all the answers. A switch would be flipped and I’d be grown up. But every once in a while there was proof that no one had it figured out, that the bungling of childhood could persist and get further out of hand as the years went by.” A father’s strange Christmas gifts threaten to tear a family apart. In the neverending war between skateboarders and guidos, a blow is struck. Through a game disguised as wall-ball, a final showdown between mothers, camp counselors, and campers comes to a stand-off. And what appears to be Indians locked in a cage might just make for the best summer ever. In this beautifully imaginative collection, young people attempt to negotiate the often surreal terrain of childhood and adolescence where family, friends, clergy, and teachers often pose more of a threat than they prevent. At the heart of the story is the relationship between the meek narrator, his best friend alpha-male Clip, and the near-feral Roger—but there are also agoraphobic mothers, gorgeous babysitters from New Zealand, paranoid stoned veterans, and deeply sad older sisters. These are modern day captivity narratives, set not at some remote fort, but in the neighborhoods of Philadelphia. The cages are not always literal, but each story explores how we confine each other and for what purtpose.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Sean Ennis has been published in Tin House, The Mississippi Review, Pindeldyboz, Fifty-Two Stories, The Good Men Project, The Greensboro Review, and Best New American Voices. He teaches creative writing at the University of Mississippi. He lives with his wife and son in Water Valley, MS.

You’re Not Much Use to Anyone David Shapiro Rights Available: English Rights Sold: Audio A funny, pitch-perfect autobiographical novel with a freshness of language and outlook that brings to mind The Catcher in the Rye, by the creator of the popular Tumblr “Pitchfork Review Reviews.” You’re Not Much Use to Anyone is David Shapiro’s winning account of the life, loves, and online habits of a twentysomething New Yorker who’s working a not-even-entry-level job, finding secret fame as a blogger, and telling his parents he’s studying for the LSATs. It’s The Graduate for the Girls generation. “If Tao Lin had been born to Gary Shteyngart’s parents and spent his early twenties slaving for pageviews at NewYorker.com, he would have written something like this, the Bright Lights, Big City of the click-here-now generation.”—Gideon Lewis-Kraus, author of A Sense of Wonder “I read David Shapiro’s very funny and deeply moving first novel beginning to end without stopping, delighted and stimulated by its interesting range of endearing characters and the unpretentious, sophisticated, compassionate, insightful voice of the narrator, who I found irresistibly and singularly real: at once playful and vulnerable and charming and harsh, yearning and impulsive, mysterious and relatable.” —Tao Lin, author of Shoplifting From American Apparel and Taipei

White Tiger on Snow Mountain David Gordon Rights Available: English Rights Sold: Audio

A brilliant, funny collection of stories that are pure—or impure—pleasure, with subjects ranging from summer loving and hit men who take up painting to sinister chat rooms and vampires in Queens.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: David Gordon was born in New York City. He attended Sarah Lawrence College and holds an MA in English and Comparative Literature and an MFA in Writing, both from Columbia University, and has worked in film, fashion, publishing and pornography. His first novel, The Serialist, won the VCU/Cabell First Novel Award and was a finalist for an Edgar Award; it also swept the three major Japanese mystery awards, and a major film adaptation is being released there this week. His second novel, Mystery Girl, was released by Thomas & Mercer in July 2013. Karen Russell writes, “David Gordon has written a passionate love story disguised as a mystery, a brainy tragicomedy. . . . His prose is by turns salacious, uproarious, and happily unhinged. A total delight.” His stories have appeared in The Paris Review, Purple, and Fence, among other publications.

Actors Anonymous James Franco Rights Available: All Languages, Audio Rights Sold: Audio, UK, Italian, German

A dark, genre-bending work that mixes memoir and pure invention—an audacious, obsessive examination of the addictions of celebrity, acting, and the making of Fictions. Actors Anonymous is unsettling, funny, personal, and dark, a story told in many forms, from testimonials (in the style of Alcoholics Anonymous) and scripts to letters, diaries, and more. Franco turns his “James Franco” persona inside out—sometimes humorously, often mercilessly. The book contains profound insights into the nature and purpose of acting, bawdy satires of the high life, as well as deeply moving portraits of aspiring actors who never quite made it. Franco’s seemingly inexhaustible celebrity currency makes this that rare work in which the writer’s fame matches his considerable literary ambition. Modeled loosely on Alcoholics Anonymous’s 12 Steps and 12 Traditions, Actors Anonymous is an intense, wild ride that’s pure Franco. “The book’s everywoman appeal aims to seduce devotees of literary giant William Faulkner and of celebrity scribe Snooki—writers whose reputations intersect exclusively in their legendary talent for alcoholic excess. The ever-clever Franco hangs his narrative framework on the sober-living tenets of the 12 steps and 12 traditions of Alcoholics Anonymous—each chapter a riff on one of these progressive steps—with results that are hilarious, shameless, and effective. Franco’s democratic marvel of feel-good prose employs a stable of likable narrators. . . Their meditations on existence as performance art are funny, subversive, enlightening, and philosophical.” —Elle Magazine “Subversively funny and provocatively honest, is ostensibly about acting but it’s really about a society where everyone’s reduced to Actors Anonymous the roles they play. The novel’s many narrators fight back against these roles in truly original, often hilarious, and deeply affecting ways. So should we all.”—Gary Shteyngart, author of Super Sad True Love Story “Electrifying to see a writer hold nothing back! This shape-shifting narrative extends a reader’s sense of what a novel can be, can do. . . . Franco’s novel lures you in with indelible images, provocative mind games, and characters laid bare, then successfully strands you in a frightening place.” —Amy Hempel

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: James Franco is the talented, ubiquitous, popular, and provocative actor, director, author, and visual artist. His first book, the story collection Palo Alto, was published in 2010.

Remember How I Told You I Loved You? Gillian Linden STOR IES

G I L L I AN

L I ND E N

Rights Available: All Languages Rights Sold: Audio

From a brilliant new literary voice, a collection of stories that follow a young woman from college into her early thirties—from delayed adolescence to (delayed) adulthood. Through college, careers, love affairs, and marriages, Linden’s characters try to sort out what separates the passing from the permanent, the actual from the possible, and exactly how involved you really have to be in the basic questions of your life. From familiar patterns like ambiguous friendships, uncertain love affairs, and unfulfilling jobs, Linden has created something new: a sharp and intimate take on romance and infidelity, trust and betrayal. A deadpan narrative, cool and precise, about hesitation and doubt and how to rid your apartment of mice, Remember How I Told You I Loved You? is by turns witty, moving, and darkly humorous. “With deadpan restraint, Linden captures the drifting disenfranchisement of post-collegiate life—its pretensions and joys, its cubicles and cats, and all those vegan boyfriends demanding their share of the rent.” —Caitlin Macy, author of Spoiled “Gillian Linden is a master of the understatement and a magician of the unsaid. . . This is a memorable collection of stories.” —Binnie Kirshenbaum, author of The Scenic Route “Rarely have I read a debut collection of stories as engaging and perceptive as Remember How I Told You I Loved You. Gillian Linden writes with deceptive ease. With her wry, freshly observed details, every page is so thoroughly entertaining that you might not realize at first how profound her grasp is of the elusive intimacy her characters seek and fear at the same time. . . With brisk, delightful clarity, Gillian Linden leaves us amazed at her talent for illuminating the most mundane of domestic enigmas.”—James Wilcox, author of Modern Baptists “Written with graceful purpose that makes these seven wonderful stories cohere as a single larger and truer story, Gillian Linden’s charming and surprising fiction is rendered with an elegant literary thrift that makes Remember How I Told You I Loved You? an exciting debut.” —Katharine Weber, author of True Confections

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Gillian Linden received her MFA from Columbia University. She is a 2011 winner of the Henfield Prize for fiction. She lives in Brooklyn with her husband.

American Spirit Dan Kennedy Rights Available: All Languages Rights Sold: Audio

When Matthew, a forty-something media executive, finds his job, health, and marriage crumbling, he goes native: Lives in his car. Dips his toe in drug-running. Contemplates song lyrics. Takes a really good pottery class. Before long he’s on a stumbling, agonizingly funny vision quest that takes him from a strip-mall parking lot to Yellowstone National Park to a Bali medical clinic, from an unlikely romance with a Hollywood agent specializing in hot young vampire roles to extreme RVing with a disgraced Wall Street trader. In this heroic and hilarious debut novel, Dan Kennedy gives us an everyman who takes us to the neon-lit edges of contemporary American life. “Dan Kennedy not only manages to craft bitter, effective comedy out of life’s darker corners—egregious substance abuse, financial collapse, depression and death but he makes it look easy.”—Washington Independent Review of Books “Kennedy (Rock On), host of The Moth storytelling series, has far surpassed the creation of character and conjured an entity so alive in its knowledge of impending death that we’re captured in a new idea of what it’s like to live.”—Publishers Weekly, Starred Review “Matthew’s stoned, stream-of-consciousness ramblings are laugh-out-loud funny, yet interspersed with passages of startling and poignant beauty. Highly recommended, especially for fans of other sharp, iconoclastic authors like Jay McInerney, Douglas Coupland, and Eric Bogosian.”—Library Journal

Godforsaken Idaho Shawn Vestal Rights Available: All Languages Rights Sold: Audio

Stories of the afterlife, the rugged Northwest, and the early days of Mormonism—by a ferociously imaginative new writer. This stunning debut story collection by an acclaimed McSweeney’s and Tin House contributor will satisfy fans of such short-fiction masters as Denis Johnson and George Saunders, as well as those readers fascinated by the Mormon faith—and those who enjoyed the show Big Love and the musical The Book of Mormon. “The First Several Hundred Years Following My Death” is a comic vision of the afterlife in which everyone in heaven is the age they were when they died—a fantasy both profound and absurd. In the tough, tender “About as Fast as This Car Can Go,” a teenager gets introduced to crime after his father is released from jail, and in “Winter Elders,” Mormon missionaries pursue a man who has left the fold—with gruesome results. In the concluding triptych, Vestal takes on the legends and legacy of Mormonism. “Diviner,” the final piece, is an indelible portrait of the young Joseph Smith, in the days when he was not yet the founder of the Mormon faith but a man hired to find buried treasure. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Shawn Vestal is a columnist for the Spokesman-Review and was raised in the Mormon faith. His stories have appeared in McSweeney’s, Tin House, and other publications.

“A provocative and revelatory debut.”—Kirkus Reviews, Starred Review “Shutter your windows—Godforsaken Idaho is an awesome storm of history, grit, and revelatory imagination. These stories take huge risks and simply do not falter. Shawn Vestal has set out to reimagine the American West, and he’s done so with the soulful, single-minded purpose of a half-mad pioneer.” —Patrick Somerville, author of This Bright River and The Cradle “Shawn Vestal’s Godforsaken Idaho is a wickedly funny, surprisingly profound collection.”Jess Walter, author of Beautiful Ruins “Godforsaken Idaho mixes the hardpan realism of Richard Ford’s Rock Springs with the dreadful wonder of Dan Chaon’s best stories.” —Kim Barnes, author of In the Kingdom of Men

“Kent is a favorite for steamy erotica, but she also writes beautiful contemporaries, and in Second Chance Café, her voice is reminiscent of an early Nora Roberts. The attraction between Kaylie and Ten is immediate, but the relationship builds slowly. A diverse secondary cast gives hope that the series will continue, perhaps with Kaylie’s friend, Luna. The sporadic inclusion of brownie recipes is a total bonus that I imagine many readers will eagerly test for themselves.”—RT Book Reviews

Elimination Night Anonymous Fiction Rights Available: English Rights Sold: Audio

Meet Sasha King, a down-to-earth young writer who finds herself working inside a world that both repels and fascinates her: Project Icon, the oncemighty TV talent show that’s taken a hit in the ratings. In an attempt to get back on top, the show has recently hired two new celebrity judges, entrepreneur-actress-singer Bibi Vasquez and rock legend Joey Lovecraft, a priapic wild man who doesn’t even own a TV (it goes against the teachings of his guru, Tibetan high lama Yutog Gonpo). In addition to the demands of the new judges, Sasha has the task of handling frighteningly robotic host Wayne Shoreline (who may or may not eat puppies as part of his pre-show prep), young would-be idols (including the foul-mouthed Mia Pelosi and the chaps-wearing Jimmy Nuggett), muckraking gossip columnists, and the powerful executive of a competing reality TV talent show. The combination of characters will leave readers swimming in a cocktail of pure crazy: Project Icon. In Elimination Night, we get a peek at the deliciously outrageous machinations—the ego clashes, meltdowns, and cover-ups—that take place behind the scenes of the talent shows we’ve become addicted to. The details of their inner workings are so accurate that the book had to be written anonymously. “Scandal!” —AOL Music “Rings deliciously true.”—People “More withering than Simon Cowell, crazier than Paula Abdul — it’s the novel that will have Hollywood on a witch hunt.” —New York Post “Sex, drugs and scandal are part of the story, as is a savage portrait of someone who could be mistaken for Ryan Seacrest...[A] fun read.” —New York Daily News “Anyone who has ever watched American Idol, and that will be almost everyone, will have the immense satisfaction of the ‘inside scoop,’ real or not.” —Kirkus Reviews “Like a reality-show version of The Devil Wears Prada… with tantalizingly plausible nuggets.”—USA Today

I Only Read It For the Cartoons The New Yorker’s Most Brilliantly Twisted Arttists

Richard Gehr Non-Fiction Rights Available: All Languages Rights Sold: Audio The New Yorker’s cartoons may reflect an institutional aesthetic, but its artists’ best work is also deeply personal. Though The New Yorker is seen as the Parthenon of single-panel cartooning, its contributors’ styles are richly varied, and their lives are surprising. For example: Did you know that Arnie Levin is a 73-year-old former Beatnik painter with a handlebar mustache and a back decorated by Japan’s foremost tattoo artists? For a Minute There it All Suddenly Made Sense! features fascinating biographical profiles of such classic artists as Gahan Wilson, Sam Gross, Roz Chast, George Booth, Lee Lorenz, Edward Koren, and Bruce Eric Kaplan. Along with a dozen such profiles, Gehr provides a brief history of The New Yorker cartoon itself, touching on the lives and work of earlier illustrating wits such as Charles Addams, James Thurber, and William Steig. The book will feature 40–60 illustrations, including not only the cartoons themselves, but terrific unpublished sketches, roughs, juvenilia, and other rare ephemera, which the artists have shared with Gehr.

The Raven

The Story of Le Corbusier, Maker of the Modern Anthony Flint Non-Fiction Rights Available: All Languages The Raven is a riveting, general-interest biography of the groundbreaking architect Le Corbusier—a man who invented new ways of building and thinking. Le Corbusier is not simply the grandfather of modern architecture but someone who sought to remake the world according to his vision, dispelling the Victorian style and replacing it with something never seen before. The Raven (a translation of his invented name) is a penetrating psychological portrait of a true genius and constant self-inventor, as well as a sweeping tale filled with exotic locales, sex and celebrity (Josephine Baker was his lover), and high-stakes projects. Through archival research, interviews, and visits to Corbusier’s most important structures (including his masterpiece in Chandrigah, India), Flint constructs a rich and fascinating story about this towering figure. The Raven is for readers fascinated by the complex personal lives and outsized visions of both groundbreaking architects and dazzling, charismatic innovators like Steve Jobs.

Running Away: A Memoir Robert Andrew Powell Non-Fiction (Memoir) Rights Available: All Languages Rights Sold: Audio

When journalist Robert Andrew Powell finished his first marathon, he wept, entirely unexpectedly, as his father embraced him. Millions of people who’ve run a marathon understand where those tears come from, even if there are millions more who will never understand what drives someone to run 26.2 consecutive miles in a grueling test of mind over matter. But Powell’s emotional reaction to completing the race wasn’t just about the run. It was about the joy and relief of coming back up after hitting rock bottom. Running Away is the story of how one man changed the course of Powell’s life. Inspired by his own father, Powell decided to make a change in his mindset and circumstances that were headed nowhere good after a painful divorce. He moved to Boulder and began training for a marathon. Over the next 26.2 episodes that follow, Powell grapples with coming to terms with his past relationships and begins to have hope for a better life, filled with new experiences and hard-won discipline. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Robert Andrew Powell is the author of We Own This Game: A Season in the Adult World of Youth Football (Grove, 2003), and This Love Is Not For Cowards: Salvation and Soccer and Ciudad Juarez (Bloomsbury, 2012). Amazon published his Kindle Single, The Dead Women of Juarez, in 2011. His journalism has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Harper’s, Play, Inc., Slate, Mother Jones, Runner’s World, on “This American Life,” and has been anthologized in The Best American Sports Writing. He lives in Miami.

Praise For This Love Is Not For Cowards: Salvation and Soccer in Ciudad Juárez by Robert Andrew Powell: “[I]n this clear-eyed and humane book Powell has succeeded in introducing his readers to a truth behind the grim and monotonous headlines.” —Boston Globe “[A]n edgy, anecdotal view of a place where ‘Murder is effectively legal’… Powell captures surreal feelings of beauty and desolation, exuberance and danger. Though the Indios fail and fail big, Powell succeeds brilliantly . . . An eye-opening and unforgettable account of a part of the world that, for all its notoriety, is effectively invisible.”—Booklist (starred review) “Candid . . . The Rise of Superman Decoding the Science of Ultimate Human Performance

Steven Kotler Non-Fiction Rights Available: All Languages Rights Sold: Japanese, UK (English), Russian, Audio, German

An exploration of how extreme athletes are able to break the limits of ultimate human performance and what we can learn from their mastery of the state of consciousness known as “flow.” In this groundbreaking book, New York Times-bestselling author Steven Kotler decodes the mystery of ultimate human performance. Drawing on over a decade of research and first-hand reporting with dozens of top action and adventure sports athletes like big wave legend Laird Hamilton, big mountain snowboarder Jeremy Jones, and skateboarding pioneer Danny Way, Kotler explores the frontier science of “flow,” an optimal state of consciousness where we perform and feel our best. Building a bridge between the extreme and the mainstream, The Rise of Superman explains how these athletes are using flow to do the impossible and how we can use this information to radically accelerate performance in our own lives. At its core, this is a book about profound possibility; about what is actually possible for our species and about where—if anywhere—our limits lie. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Steven Kotler is a bestselling author and an award-winning journalist. His books include the non-fiction works: Abundance, A Small, Furry Prayer, and West of Jesus, and the novel The Angle Quickest for Flight. His articles have appeared in over 60 publications, and he writes “The Playing Field,” a blog about the science of sport and culture for PsychologyToday.com. Kotler is also the co-founder and director of research at the Flow Genome Project, an international organization devoted to putting flow state research on a hard science footing, and the co-founder of the New Mexico-based Rancho de Chihuahua dog sanctuary. Steven Kotler’s next book, Far Frontiers, an exploration of cutting-edge technologies that are looming on the horizon, is forthcoming from New Harvest in Fall 2014. Kotler will walk us through asteroid mining, stem cells, steroids, fourth-generation nuclear power, super soldiers, and more.

The Surprising Influence of the Real World on How We Search, Shop, and Sell in the Virtual One

David Bell Non-Fiction Rights Available: All Languages Rights Sold: Audio The Internet is a transformative technology. The impact of the Internet, on commerce and on the daily lives of individuals all over the world, exceeds almost everything that preceded it, including momentous inventions like the internal combustion engine and the printing press. And conventional wisdom goes that the Internet makes the world flat and reduces friction, erasing the impact of the physical world on our buying habits. But Wharton Professor and marketing expert David R. Bell argues that that the way we use the virtual world of the Internet—for commerce and for information—is shaped to a significant degree by the physical world that each of us lives in. It is certainly true that anyone in the U.S. (or even the world) could go to Bonobos.com and buy a pair of fashion-forward and comfortable pants. But the likelihood that a specific individual will actually do this depends a lot on where he lives. The presence of local stores, trendy and friendly neighbors, and sales taxes assessed on pants purchased in his local neighborhood play a large role in all parts of the decision-making process relating to buying online. Location is (Still) Everything is for anyone who wants to understand the patterns underlying how and why we use the Internet and related technologies to shop, sell, and search.

The Leap

The Science of Trust and Why It Matters

Ulrich Boser Non-Fiction (Business) Rights Available: All Languages Rights Sold: Audio The issue of damaged trust is in the headlines daily. The Occupy Wall Street movement, the ongoing Eurozone crisis, and the investigations surrounding cell phone hacking at News Corp are but just a few of the many recent stories in which trust—or lack thereof—is a crucial factor. Trust isn’t just critical to the functioning of the global economy but also to our own personal finances; studies show that trusting people earn more money (and are happier). Boser examines the crucial role that trust plays in making institutions and personal relationships work, and argues that rebuilding trust is a vital necessity for our own sense of fulfillment, as well as for the health of society at large. The research is hopeful: Broken trust can be restored, and this book points us toward how it’s possible to achieve. The Leap offers the same surprising revelations and potential for self-improvement offered by bestselling books like Willpower, Predictably Irrational, Nudge, and Outliers— with a topic that is at once timely and evergreen. 94

Introducing ICONS: Biographies for the Digital Age Series edited by James Atlas We are living in what the English biographer Michael Holroyd has called “a golden age of biography,” a moment when the genre occupies a dominant place in our literary culture. In a time when our fascination with the private aspects of public lives is so intense, it’s not surprising that biography has become one of the most prominent forms of narrative nonfiction. Yet reading habits have changed dramatically in the digital age: readers accustomed to taking on books of daunting length have been adapting themselves to the ebook in all its forms, while the information overload that is now a ubiquitous feature of daily life has made it harder to reach a new generation of readers. Icons, a new series of brief biographies launching in December 2013, is designed to take advantage of these transformations. In the tradition of the Penguin Lives, which sold 700,000 copies and was published in translation all over the world, it provides a reading experience perfectly suited to a moment of unprecedented change. Written by established and emerging writers, the books in the series will be 25,000 to 40,000 words, and will focus on canonical figures in the culture, both historical and contemporary. The series is edited by the biographer James Atlas (Delmore Schwartz: The Biography of an American Poet, Bellow: A Biography), founding editor of the Penguin Lives and of two other highly acclaimed series, Great Discoveries (W.W. Norton) and Eminent Lives (HarperCollins). Forthcoming titles:

The Art of Youth

Crane, Carrington, Gershwin, and the Nature of First Acts

Nicholas Delbanco Non-Fiction Rights Available: English Rights Sold: Audio The Art of Youth is a moving inquiry into the nature of artistic prodigies who did their major work at an early age. Renowned novelist Nicholas Delbanco gives us a triptych of indelible portraits: the American writer Stephen Crane (immortalized by The Red Badge of Courage); British artist Dora Carrington (called “the most neglected serious painter of her time”); and the legendary composer George Gershwin (Rhapsody in Blue, Porgy and Bess). All three lived colorful, productive lives before dying early, at an average age of thirty-five. In this learned and elegant book, Delbanco discovers what it is we mourn in authors who pass away so young, and muses on his own life—one marked by both early success and longevity. “The Art of Youth is a brilliant book about the power of youth to make great art, itself suffused with youthfulness, with wisdom and diligence and hope…Dazzling in detail and amazingly well-informed.” –Paul Theroux, author of The Lower River

Women Who Don’t Wait in Line Reshma Saujani Non-Fiction Rights Available: All Languages Rights Sold: Audio Women Who Don’t Wait in Line is an urgent wake-up call from politico and activist Reshma Saujani. The former New York City Deputy Public Advocate and founder of the national nonprofit Girls Who Code argues that aversion to risk and failure is the final hurdle holding women back in the workplace. Saujani advocates a new model of female leadership based on sponsorship—where women encourage each other to compete, take risks, embrace failure, and lift each other up personally and professionally. Woven throughout the book are lessons and stories from accomplished women like Susan Lyne, Randi Zuckerberg, Mika Brzezinski, and Anne-Marie Slaughter, who have faced roadblocks and overcome them by forging new paths, being unapologetically ambitious, and never taking no for an answer. Readers are also offered a glimpse into Saujani’s personal story, including her immigrant upbringing and the insights she gleaned from running a spirited campaign for U.S. Congress in 2010.

In this moving coming-of-age story, Kim brings to life her rat-infested home, her childhood consumed by concealing her father’s shameful secret from friends, and the emotional burden that ultimately led to an attempt to take her own life. Leadership Transformed

How Ordinary Managers Become Extraordinary Leaders

Peter Fuda Non-Fiction Rights Sold: UK (English), Audio How does a good manager become a great leader? Ask around in business circles and you’ll get a thousand different answers. But now, internationally renowned leadership expert Dr. Peter Fuda has created a single, coherent roadmap for leadership effectiveness in Leadership Transformed. After more than a decade’s research and practice, Dr. Fuda shares the seven common themes that have enabled hundreds of CEOs around the world to transform themselves into highly effective leaders, and transform the performance of their organizations as well. Through his work, Dr. Fuda discovered that the best way to elicit deep and broad discussion of the seven leadership themes—and to describe the CEOs’ mastery of what they had learned—was through metaphor. “Leadership Transformed will help anyone recognize great leaders, and even more importantly, accelerate your own entrepreneur leadership transformation.” —Forbes.com

Walden on Wheels The Open Road from Debt to Freedom

Ken Ilgunas Non-Fiction Rights Available: All Languages Rights Sold: Audio

In this frank and witty memoir, Ken Ilgunas lays bare the existential terror of graduating from the University of Buffalo with $32,000 of student debt. Ilgunas set himself an ambitious mission: get out of debt as quickly as possible. Inspired by the frugality and philosophy of Henry David Thoreau, Ilgunas undertook a 3-year transcontinental journey, working in Alaska as a tour guide, garbage picker, and night cook to pay off his student loans before hitchhiking home to New York. Debt-free, Ilgunas then enrolled in a master’s program at Duke University, determined not to borrow against his future again. He used the last of his savings to buy himself a used Econoline van and outfitted it as his new dorm. The van, stationed in a campus parking lot, would be more than an adventure—it would be his very own “Walden on Wheels.” Freezing winters, near-discovery by campus police, and the constant challenge of living in a confined space would test Ilgunas’s limits and resolve in the two years that followed. What had begun as a simple mission would become an enlightening and life-changing social experiment. Walden on Wheels offers a spirited and pointed perspective on the dilemma faced by those who seek an education but who also want to, as Thoreau wrote, “live deep and suck out all the marrow of life.” “[Walden on Wheels is] searching and ambitious—one of the best books I’ve read this year.”—LA Review of Books “Walden on Wheels [is] a remarkable memoir that manages to stay light on its feet while saying a great deal about the state of modern American society. Ilgunas is a rare and wonderful travel companion. Along the way, he describes natural phenomena so skillfully that you might be compelled to flee your desk and head for the hills, walking stick in hand.”—Washington Post “A thoroughly endearing account.”—The Wall Street Journal ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Ken Ilgunas was born in Hamilton, Ontario, and raised in Wheatfield–a small rural-suburban town in Western New York where his family lives. At the moment, he’s either tending a friend’s garden in Stokes County, North Carolina, or traveling cross-country in his van.

College (Un)bound

The Future of Higher Education and What it Means for Students

Jeffrey Selingo Non-Fiction Rights Available: All Languages Rights Sold: Audio What is the value of a college degree? With student-loan debt surpassing the $1 trillion mark and unemployment on the rise, people are beginning to question that value. In College (Un)bound, Jeffrey J. Selingo, editor at large for The Chronicle for Higher Education, argues that America’s higher education system is broken. The great credential race has turned universities into big business and fostered an environment where middle tier colleges can command elite university-level tuition while concealing staggeringly low graduation rates and churning out students with few hard skills into the job market. Incisive, urgent, and controversial, this is a must-read for students, parents, and anyone concerned with the future of American higher education. “A compelling look at higher education. Selingo is critical, but he’s also encouraging. With so much time and money at stake, the issues he raises and the possibilities he explores are well worth your time.” —The Washington Post

To the Moon and Timbuktu Nina Sovich Non-Fiction Rights Available: All Languages Rights Sold: Audio Nina Sovich had always yearned for adventures in faraway places; she imagined herself leading the life of a solitary traveler. Yet at the age of thirty-four, she found herself married and contemplating motherhood. Unwittingly, she had followed life’s script, and now she needed to cast it out. Inspired by female explorers like Mary Kingsley, who explored Gabon’s jungle in the 1890s, and Karen Blixen, who ran a farm in Kenya during World War I, Sovich packed her bags and hopped on the next plane to Africa in search of adventure. To the Moon and Timbuktu takes readers on her fast-paced trek through Western Sahara, Mali, Mauritania, and Niger, bringing their textures and flavors into vivid relief. Sovich’s journey reveals that sometimes we must pursue that distant glimmer on the horizon in order to find the things we value most. “Sovich’s journeys are page-turning and suspenseful. Her travels are uncomfortable, often frightening, always illuminating and so beautifully conveyed that the reader feels present, as if she herself is watching a sunrise over the Nile.”—Bookpage

We find Jimmy Veeder settled in the Imperial Valley: working his farmland, living with girlfriend Angie Torres, and raising his brother Juan as his son. He still spends time with his best friend Bobby Maves, but their relationship has become a bit strained. As Jimmy gets more comfortable with his respectable life and responsibilities, Bobby’s antics and irresponsibility, while often appealing, are no longer something that Jimmy can do on a regular basis. Bobby is a man of action. And when there is no action, he creates it.

Carly moves home in an attempt to start a new life after dramatically losing her husband and unborn child. As Carly falls in love again, Ella— her landlady who lives in the flat above—falls apart; she wants Carly all to herself and won’t stop at anything until she has her. A gritty and menacing ‘neighbor from hell’ psycho thriller in the vein of Single White Female or Pacific Heights.
