1. MEDICAL DOCTOR JOSEPH A J2 ROTH (JACOB1) was born 28 Feb 1828 in St.Louis,Mo., and died 26 Nov 1898 in Coaldale, Scott co., Ark. He married (1) CATHERINE E. BRAWNER 27 Sep 1852 in St. Louis,Mo. at St.Francis Xavia(College Church), daughter of JEREMIAH BRAWNER and MARY KEEPERS. She was born Abt. 1822 in Maryland., and died 08 Aug 1889 in CoalDale, Scott co., Ark.. He married (2) LUCINDA ALEXANDER 16 Aug 1893 in Scott ,Co.,Arkansas, daughter of JOHN ALEXANDER. She was born 14 Aug 1870 in Scott,Co, Arkansas, and died 10 Jun 1948. Roth is deserving of a special mention as a successful practitioner of the " healing art," and although he has lived in Scott County, Ark., a comparatively short time, he is well and favorably known and has a large practice. He was born in St. Louis, Mo., on February 28, 1828, a son of Jacob and Charlotte (Barclay) Roth, the birth of the former being in Switzerland, and that of the latter occurring in 1805. They were married in St. Louis, and the subject of this sketch is their only child. The father, who was of Swiss descent, was murdered in Santa Fe, N. M., but his widow survives him, and makes her home with her son, the Doctor being now sixty-two years of age. Dr.Roth was married in St. Louis September 27, 1852, at St. Exavia Church, to Mrs. Catherine E. Chappie, a widow with one child, Alexis, who is now deceased. The wife's maiden name was Brawner. To her union with Dr. Roth one child was born, Archibald. Mrs. Roth died August 8, 1889, having been a member of the Catholic Church throughout the greater portion of her life. In 1

1865 Dr. Roth commenced the study of medicine, and in 1868 took his first course of lectures in the St. Louis Medical College, and the same year he commenced practicing. He bas been actively engaged in practicing ever since, but since 1875 has been a resident of Scott County, Ark., having moved hither from Bates County, Mo. He is the owner of 125 acres of good land, 65 of which are in an excellent state of cultivation. He was a soldier in the Mexican War, and has always been a strong advocate of the freeschool system. Socially he belongs to Duval Lodge No. 249, of the A.F. & A.M. POTEAU A settlement on the Poteau river, in Lafayette township, Scott county, 187 miles northwest of Little Rock, 18 west of Waldron, the county seat, and 50 southeast of Fort Smith, the nearest railroad station and banking point. Settled in 1850, it contains steam saw and grist mills, a cotton gin, 3 churches and a school. Cotton is shipped. Population, 100. Mail, tri-weekly. J.M.McDaniel, postmaster. Blair, D.H., general store. Durneal, Wm., justice of peace. Hendricks, W.H., constable. Hill, Rev. J.C. (Campbellite). Justice, H., grist mill. Kilgo, J.B., physician. McDaniel, J.M., farmer. Roth ofGipson in the County of Scott and State of Arkansas,being in ill health but of sound and disposing mind and memory do make and publish this my last will and testament hereby Revoking all former wills by me at any time heretofore made. 1st. I hereby constitute and appoint E.B Miller, T.A. Hall and M. Smith at Cauthron,Arkansas. To appoint the Executor of this my last will and Testament, and also that if my wife Lucindy Roth shall dye leaving my Daughter Katy Roth to (0) young to choose a gardian, that the said E.B.Miller, T.A. Hall and M. Smith shall choose one for her. I further direct that (if) there should be other heirs by my present wife they shall have an equal share with my daughter Kate Roth. 2nd, I hereby direct that my Executor after being chosen as directed above shall pay all my Just Debts and Funeral Expenses, and the Legacies herinafter given, out of My Estate. 3rd, After the payment of my said Debts and funeral Expenses, I give to my children Archabald Roth and Katy Roth the following named and Described property to (page 2) wit: To my son Archabald Roth I give one Log wagon and the work Oxen and one sett Blacksmith tools that he now has in his Possession, 3

and what I have heretofore given him, also one half of all My personal property Except my Homestead Effects. To my Daughter Katy Roth I give all my Real Estate described as follows To wit: Arkansas, and is more particularly described in Deeds. That said land herein bequeathed shall not be sold or mortagaged prior to the year AD 1919 and that all Taxes and Expenses of keeping up the said land shall be taken out of the Rents of said lands, and the remainder of the Rents to go to my wife Lucindy Roth so long as she shall remain unmarried and my widow, and on her death (page 3rd) or marriage to then go to my Daughter Katy Roth. I give to my wife Lucindy Roth all my Household Effects and also to shear Equally with my son Archabald Roth in all my personal Porperty which will be one half of all my personal property after my Debts and funeral Expenses are paid as above set forth. In Testimony whereof. I hereunto set my hand and publish and declare this to be my last will and testament, in the presence of the witnesses named below. This 24th day of September A.D. 1898. Notes for ARCHIBALD ROTH: SCOTT COUNTY ARKANSAS 1880 AGRICULTURAL CENSUS LAFAYETTE TOWNSHIP Archibald Roth owned 17 acres improved and 100 acres unimproved woodland valued at $600. He had $100 worth of farm tools and livestock valued at $800. He had spent $100 on his fences and paid $50 in wages for 12 weeks of farm labor. Estimated farm production was $450. He owned 7 horses, 3 mules or asses, 2 working oxen, 9 milch cows and 18 other cattle. 3 calves had been dropped and he had purchased 3 head of cattle, sold 4, slaughtered 2 and 2 had died, strayed or were stolen and not recovered. 156 pounds of butter was produced on his farm. He had 50 swine, 15 barnyard and 10 other poultry which had laid 20 dozen eggs. 8 acres produced 150 bushels of Indian Corn, 1 ½ acres produced 20 bushels of oats, 4 acres produced 4 bales of cotton and 4 acres produced 60 bushels of sweet potatoes. He had cut 50 cords of wood valued at $25.

Note Arch Roth Md. Was also a Dentist. He owned A Roth Lumber Co in Gilliam Ark. and sawmill and grocery store, out from Gillham,Ark. at the end of the mail route. He built his home in1907 located somewhere between Broken Bow and Poteau Oklahoma, this is where he was living at the time of his death. Arch A. Roth owned 750 acres in the Foot Hills of the Poteau Mountains. This land was sold .
