Running  Head:  Secrets  of  Body  Language

Secrets  of  Body  Language  Summary  and  Reflection    Words  are  only  7%  of  what  we  say  and  the  other  93%  is  body  language.    Body   language  is  non-‐verbal  communication  that  consists  of  body  posture,  gestures,  facial   expressions,  and  eye  movements.         Body  language  is  crucial  and  can  vary  between  cultures.    Different  cultures  can   interpret  certain  gestures  differently.      Every  thing  from  the  way  your  body  moves  to  the   way  you  shake  hands  can  be  interpreted  to  mean  something.    Image  is  everything  and  body   language  is  powerful.       Body  language  became  important  to  politicians  after  the  first  televised  debate.    Many   politicians  are  now  coached  on  how  to  get  their  message  to  the  public  effectively  by  using;   actual  words,  vocal  tone,  pitch,  pace  of  voice,  facial  expression,  gestures  and  posture.     Sometimes  gestures  can  come  off  as  not  natural.    Gestures  should  be  expressed  from  the   heart  and  displayed  on  the  beat  of  feel,  show,  and  say.       There  are  people  that  study  the  body  language  of  others.    They  look  for  cues  called   micro-‐expressions.      Micro-‐expressions  can  tell  what  a  person  is  really  feeling  and  if   someone  is  lying,  uncomfortable,  confidant,  happy  or  sad.    Our  subconscious  is  usually   dominant  and  can  be  a  dead  giveaway.       I  never  knew  how  much  body  language  could  effect  how  others  view  you  and  the   impact  it  can  have  on  the  message  or  image  you  are  trying  to  portray.    After  watching  the   video,  I  will  be  more  away  of  my  posture  and  facial  expressions.    In  the  past  I  have  been   told  that  you  can  tell  what  I’m  thinking  by  my  facial  expressions.    My  goal  is  to  practice  a   being  stoic  in  certain  work  settings.
