Synopsis Russian Beginners 1 aims to provide students with a basic knowledge of Russian and focuses on the acquisition of practical communicative skills. It covers basic grammar and essential vocabulary, allowing students to communicate effectively and with confidence in Russian on a limited range of topics relating to everyday situations. The course is taught mainly in Russian and concentrates on acquisition of the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, with the main emphasis on speaking. Students engage in interactive language activities, participating in group and pair work to practice vocabulary, word and grammar structures. There is an overview, consolidation and feedback session in the final week, concentrating on the material covered in the term. By the end of the term, students should be able to read the Russian (Cyrillic) alphabet, greet people (both friends and strangers), introduce themselves and others, count, make simple positive and negative statements, ask questions, describe their family and use some simple verbs (‘work’, ‘live’, etc.).
