ANCIENT & MODERN Hymns and songs for refreshing worship Who is Ancient & Modern for? Any congregation where hymns and songs are sung will find the comprehensive selection in Ancient & Modern a valuable aid to worship. As has been the case with all editions of Hymns Ancient & Modern since the first, Ancient & Modern is arranged in seasonal and liturgical order. Churches that follow a lectionary at their services will find Ancient & Modern particularly useful and easy to use. Many churches still have older editions of Hymns A&M: this new version provides the ideal opportunity to replace these with a hymnbook providing not only well-loved repertoire in congregational-friendly keys but also a wide selection of contemporary hymns and songs, including many suitable for all-age worship. What’s in the book? Ancient & Modern aims to combine the best of our wonderful heritage of traditional hymnody with recently written songs and hymns, some already becoming familiar but not yet included in most standard hymn books. There are many new hymn texts paired with well-known tunes, while a few older texts appear with freshly composed settings. Some strong new tunes have been found to match imaginative words. Choirs will find plenty to enjoy (including a wide range of descants), as will churches with less traditional musical ensembles, but the needs of congregations with very limited resources have not been ignored. The book includes resources specifically for morning and evening worship, hymns and songs for seasons of the Church’s year and for different types of service, a number of metrical paraphrases of psalms and canticles, some prayer responses and other short chants (including a selection from Taizé), and material relating to the Church’s ministry and mission as well as to subjects such as peace, justice and environmental concern. As part of the selection process, members of the editorial team studied each hymn to ensure that the words were relevant to today’s worshipping community and the tunes were in musically satisfying arrangements. The team aimed to see women well represented among the authors and composers and to identify younger writers whose work deserves to be brought to a wider audience. Familiar names such as Timothy Dudley-Smith and John Bell of the Iona Community are also well represented.

and

Who has put it together? The editors include musicians and liturgists from a variety of backgrounds, bringing a range of different skills and areas of expertise. Among them are Gordon Giles, Vicar of St Mary Magdalene, Enfield and writer of a regular column about hymns in Church Music Quarterly, Tim Ruffer, the RSCM’s Head of Publishing, Anne Harrison, who helps to produce the quarterly planner Sunday by Sunday for the RSCM and is also one of the editors of Praxis News of Worship, and John Barnard, composer, organist and choir director, who brought his experience as a parish musician and an active member of the Hymn Society of Great Britain and Ireland. The editors benefitted from the wisdom of colleagues who helped put together Sing Praise: Michael Hampel, now Precentor at St Paul’s Cathedral, Peter Moger, now Precentor at York Minster and Peter Nardone, now Director of Music at Worcester Cathedral. The aim of the editors was to produce a resource with liturgical and musical integrity, while reflecting some of the widely diverse patterns of worship within today’s ‘mixed economy’ church and taking into account the centrality of mission in recent thinking and writing. What exactly is being published? A full music edition and a words-only edition will be available initially, to be followed by a melody edition. Texts will also be available in a downloadable electronic words edition, and advice will be provided on copyright for those who wish to print or project the words: most items in the book will be covered either by Christian Copyright Licensing or the Calamus licensing scheme. How much will it cost? Full details of editions, prices and the grant scheme, plus a time-limited special offer, can be found on the final page of the Sampler.

We pledge to one another, before the Lord above, complete and full and perfect, this union of our love — a love that will be patient, a love that will be wise, that will not twist with envy, nor lose itself in lies; a love that will not falter, a love to hold us fast, and bind us to each other as long as life shall last.

2

We pray that God will guide us through all the years to be, our lives be shaped by courage, hope and serenity. Through joy and celebration, through loneliness and pain, may loyalty, compassion and tenderness remain, that those who share the blessing of love that cannot cease, may walk the paths of gentleness into the place of peace.

How shall I sing that majesty which angels do admire? Let dust in dust and silence lie; sing, sing, ye heavenly choir. Thousands of thousands stand around thy throne, O God most high; ten thousand times ten thousand sound thy praise; but who am I?

2

Thy brightness unto them appears, whilst I thy footsteps trace; a sound of God comes to my ears, but they behold thy face. They sing, because thou art their Sun; Lord, send a beam on me; for where heaven is but once begun there alleluias be. Enlighten with faith’s light my heart, inXame it with love’s Wre; then shall I sing and bear a part with that celestial choir. I shall, I fear, be dark and cold, with all my Wre and light; yet when thou dost accept their gold, Lord, treasure up my mite.

Here proclaim the glorious mystery of the body and the blood; formed within the womb, made human, he the earth’s transcendent Lord; oVered for the world’s redemption, promise of eternal good.

2

On the night of that last supper, there reclining with his friends, met to celebrate Passover, eating as the law demands: he, as food for his disciples, gives himself from his own hands.

3

Word made Xesh, by word is making simple bread his Xesh, and we here discern Christ’s blood, though senses nothing more than wine can see: faith alone, true hearts sustaining, can perceive the mystery.

Therefore we, with deepest reverence, celebrate this sacrament; Wnding all the ancient scriptures sealed in his new covenant; what the senses fail to fathom, faith receives as nourishment.

How shall we sing salvation’s song when justice stands denied, when greed and tyranny and wrong prevail on every side? Shall silent fall our voice of praise, as on the willows hung the harps that told of happier days when songs of home were sung?

Yet still we sing as Moses sang beside the parted wave, when Canaan’s skies in triumph rang to God the strong to save. We too in psalms like David sing, as David’s faith we claim, who sang as shepherd-boy and king of God’s eternal name.

Jesus, Redeemer, may we remember your gracious passion, your resurrection: worship we bring you, praise we shall sing you, Jesus, redeemer, Jesus, our Lord.

Angel-voices ever singing round thy throne of light, angel-harps for ever ringing, rest not day nor night; thousands only live to bless thee and confess thee Lord of might.

2

Thou who art beyond the farthest mortal eye can scan, can it be that thou regardest songs of sinful man? Can we know that thou art near us, and wilt hear us? Yea, we can.

3

Yea, we know that thou rejoicest o’er each work of thine; thou didst ears and hands and voices for thy praise design; craftsman’s art and music’s measure for thy pleasure all combine.

O God, you search me and you know me. All my thoughts lie open to your gaze. When I walk or lie down you are before me: ever the maker and keeper of my days.

2

You know my resting and my rising. You discern my purpose from afar, and with love everlasting you besiege me: in every moment of life and death, you are.

3

Before a word is on my tongue, Lord, you have known its meaning through and through. You are with me beyond my understanding: God of my present, my past and future, too.

4

Although your Spirit is upon me, still I search for shelter from your light. There is nowhere on earth I can escape you: even the darkness is radiant in your sight.

5

For you created me and shaped me, gave me life within my mother’s womb. For the wonder of who I am, I praise you: safe in your hands, all creation is made new.

Sing all creation, sing to God in gladness; joyously serve him, singing hymns of homage, chanting his praises, come before his presence: Praise the Almighty! Praise the Almighty! Praise the Almighty! Know that our God is Lord of all the ages; he is our maker: we are all his creatures, people he fashioned, sheep he leads to pasture:

3

Enter his temple, ringing out his praises; sing in thanksgiving as you come before him; blessing his bounty, glorify his greatness:

Great in his goodness is the Lord we worship; steadfast his kindness, love that knows no ending; faithful his word is, changeless, everlasting:

When memory fades and recognition falters, when eyes we love grow dim, and minds confused, speak to our souls of love that never alters, speak to our hearts by pain and fear abused. O God of life and healing peace, empower us with patient courage, by your grace infused.

2

As frailness grows, and youthful powers diminish and weary arms decline in strength and skill, your ageing servants faithfully shall Wnish their earthly tasks, obedient to your will. We grieve their fading, yet rejoice, believing your arms, unwearying, will uphold us still.

3

Within your Spirit, goodness lives unfading; the past and future mingle into one. All joys remain, with heavenly light pervading; no valued deed will ever be undone. Your mind enfolds all Wnite acts and oVerings, held in your heart, our deathless life is won!
