Season’s Greetings Early Out Semester Tests December 19 1:00 P.M December 20 1:00 P.M December 20- NO ELEMENTARY No School Winter Break December 23 to January 6, 2013

District Administrative Coordinator Corner I would like to take this opportunity to extend my congratulations to all of the students involved in fall activities. It is always so impressive the way that our many student athletes and activity participants come together throughout the season to improve their skills and help one another to achieve higher levels of success from early August through October. As we move into our winter season, I would like to wish every participant the best as they begin new challenges and hope that the season is a successful one! As we begin this very festive and busy time of year, it is especially important that you reinforce time management with your children. With the quarter ending soon and semester finals approaching, it is important to structure study time at home on a regular basis. Please make sure you are checking in with your children and asking them about school and how they are doing. Be sure to check your child’s grades on Power School on a regular basis. If you have any concerns or questions, please feel free to call or email your child’s teachers at any time. Consistent communication between home and school will only enhance your child’s educational experience here at Allen. Check their grades on Power School and fill free to call or email the teachers at any time. If you

have any questions about upcoming events and schedules, please call the office. Just a reminder as the weather is starting to turn for the worse, along with the Tyco Alert calling system, Allen Consolidated schools will continue to use Snow Cap Online and KTIV as the main sources to report school information related to weather. Decisions about a possible late start or no school will be made as soon as possible the morning of the inclement weather. As soon as the decision is made information will be posted to KTIV and Snow Cap and a Tyco Alert now call will be made. Another winter weather concern is dressing the students appropriately for the upcoming temperatures. Please make sure your elementary students have heavy coats, some type of snow pants, gloves, and hats. The Elementary classes will be going outside for recess on most days unless the weather is too severe. Mr. Pattee Principal’s Corner It is difficult to believe that December is upon us, and that we have almost completed one semester of school already. Please note that semester tests are scheduled for Thursday, December 19, and Friday, December 20, 2013. We have been encouraging students to work hard and improve their grades all semester, and with good attendance and effort, there is still plenty of time to do so. Here at school, on a weekly basis, struggling students have been notified of their grades and asked to identify some possible methods of improvement for that class. At home, discussing classes, checking PowerSchool on a regular basis, and helping your teen establish a scheduled homework/study time are a few things that can also improve

student learning. By working together, hopefully we can make an impact on academic success for our students. I would like to take this time to extend congratulations to all of our students involved in fall activities, and invite everyone to continue supporting students as winter activities commence. By this time, basketball has begun, our one- act play group has competed, and our band and choir students have been busy preparing for their holiday concert. Our students appreciate your support and attendance at their activities! Finally, during this upcoming holiday season, it is always good to take time to be thankful for our blessings. Here at Allen Consolidated School, we are grateful for the Allen community, parents, students, staff and Board of Education. All of these people work together to provide a safe and wholesome educational program for our students. I would like to personally say “thank you” to everyone and mention how much I enjoy working with you all! I am so grateful to be a part of this district, and I wish you the happiest of holidays! Mrs. Oswald Santa and Mrs. Clause Santa and Mrs. Clause will be visiting with the children at the Christmas concert on December 19th. They will be in the gym before the concert and in the Commons at intermission after the elementary part of the concert. Any preschool through third grade child can have his/her picture taken with Santa and Mrs. Clause for $2.00. Order forms will be given to students December 11 and anyone wishing to have a picture taken is asked to return the order and money to the teacher by Monday, December 16th. Preschool children may order and pay for pictures as they are taken before the concert.

Here are some test taking tips that you can share with your children as we are getting close to semester test time. 1. Everyone is different; different methods work for different people. The following are only suggestions on improving upon your current studying techniques. 2. It is best to review the material right after class when it's still fresh in your memory. Don't try to do all you’re studying the night before the test. Instead space out your studying, review class materials at least several times a week, focusing on one topic at a time. 3. Have all of your study material in front of you: lecture notes, course textbooks, study guides and any other relevant material. 4. Find a comfortable and quiet place to study with good lighting and little distractions (try avoiding your own bed; it is very tempting to just lie down and take a nap). 5. Start out by studying the most important information. 6. Learn the general concepts first, don't worry about learning the details until you have learned the main ideas. 7. Take notes and write down a summary of the important ideas as you read through your study material. 8. Take short breaks frequently. Your memory retains the information that you study at the beginning and the end better than what you study in the middle. 9. Space out your studying, you'll learn more by studying a little every day instead of waiting to cram at the last minute. By studying every day, the material will stay in your longterm memory, but if you try to study at the last moment, the material will only reside in your short-term memory that you'll easily forget. 10. Make sure that you understand the material well; don't just read through the material and try to memorize everything. 11. If you choose to study in a group, only study with others who are serious about the test.

12. Test yourself or have someone test you on the material to find out what your weak and strong areas are. You can use the review questions at the end of each chapter or practice tests the teacher may give out as well as other materials.
