GDS SCHOOLS COMPETITION My city, my vision 2040? The City’s GDS is its long-term plan to ensure sustainable delivery of services, deal with social and economic development, involve residents in Local Government and promote a safe and healthy environment. Do you want to contribute to making Johannesburg a world class City for yourself, your children and future generations? If you have answered yes to the above question then we would like to invite you (learners/students in the City of Johannesburg) to participate in the City’s GDS competition.

GDS Objectives: • • • •

To create a platform for discussions on the key challenges confronting the City; To help us to initiate dialogues on the GDS To help us to obtain input and suggestions from learners and communities; and To help us to capture the imagination of Joburg residents in order to maximise interaction and participation.

Themes: • • • • • • • •

Economic growth (gap between rich and poor) Liveable communities (sustainable communities) Community safety (combating crime) Health and poverty Resource sustainability (basic services, water, waste) Governance (participation, inclusion) Transport Smart city (broad banding, social, technological)

CATEGORY A: COLOURING IN COMPETITION Foundation Phase: Colouring in competition. Learners will be required to complete a futurescape of their City on the supplied entry form. Schools are requested to submit their top 10 forms for adjudication by the judges. Closing date for entries: Fri 16 September 2011. CATEGORY B: ESSAY OR ARTWORK Primary School: Write an essay of not more than 200-250 words on any of the above themes or complete an artwork on your vision of your city in 2040. Closing date for entries: 30 September 2011. CATEGORY C: SKIT OR 3-D MODEL Secondary schools: Write and produce a skit of approximately 15-20 minutes on your understanding of what an Active Citizen is. Your group should not exceed 6 members or Design and build a 3-D model of your understanding of what your future city would look like using recycled or scrap material. Use the above themes to guide you. Closing date for entries: 10 October 2011. CATEGORY D: SKIT OR 3-D MODEL Tertiary Institutes: Write and produce a skit of approximately 15-20 minutes on your understanding of what an Active Citizen is. Guidelines • The cost of set up, production and design of projects and skits will be undertaken by the relevant individuals. The City will not be held liable for any cost incurred. • All learners/students in the City of Johannesburg are eligible to participate. • All categories will be adjudicated separately.

Where to hand in your entries: • Danie Van Zyl Recreation Centre, Montclare, cnr. Rex and Plantation road just off Ontdekkers road, only on the dates supplied on page one of the entry form.
