PREFACE Andaman and Nicobar Islands are certainly one of the most fascinating territories of India with panoramic beauty of nature. The emerald islands lie as a necklace in the magnificent blue water in the South eastern end of Bay of Bengal. These islands have diverse ecosystems are very rich in terrestrial and aquatic biodiversity, a significant portion of which are endemic to these islands. The tropical forest and littoral ecosystems in Andaman and Nicobar Islands are the largest and most varied ecosystem, which attract not only the naturalist but also scientific community of various disciplines to study them. Precisely for this reason, several scientific investigations were carried out in this region for past two centuries and due to these enormous efforts, a very large volume of articles, scientific papers, reports, books etc have been published, which form the treasure of these islands for posterity. Central Agricultural Research Institute, being a premier research Institute in the islands has taken the lead in documenting the published research materials in the form of a comprehensive bibliography entitled, “Science Bibliography of Andaman and Nicobar Islands (1688-2009)”. This includes the reference material on natural and applied sciences pertaining to Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It is hoped that this bibliography would inspire research workers, policy makers and administrators to work for conservation of the fragile ecosystem of this island territory. A total of 4255 articles have been listed in this bibliography, in six separate sections covering a period from 1688 to August, 2009. All the references in the text are numbered serially and the list of authors has been arranged in alphabetical order. A chronological order has also been followed for the published materials of the same author. In addition to this an author index and key word index have been provided at the end of the compilation. For convenience of the readers, the serial numbers of the references under each discipline has been prepared separately. It is hoped that this document will make each and every Islander proud of the vast and precious resources of these emerald islands and will serve as a ready source of reference for all the available published materials on the large spectrum of research that has been carried out on these Islands. The Compilers and Editors owe their deep sense of gratitude and indebtedness to His Excellency, Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Bhopinder Singh, PVSM, AVSM, the Honourable Lieutenant Governor, Andaman and Nicobar Islands for writing the foreword of this bibliography and encouraging the authors immensely in this endeavour.
