Grade 9 Applied Science Course    

I learn best when I can use my senses (visual, audio, kinesthetic) I may require assistance with problem solving. I prefer to learn a new topic and have an extra day to practice it. I like to have some practice time with teacher / peer support in class  I am willing to do at least 15 minutes of homework a day.  My grade 8 teacher recommended me for this course.

Grade 9 Academic Science Course  I am able to learn a new topic everyday and feel comfortable with it.  My reading and mathematical abilities have served me well in previous science classes  I am comfortable exploring science ideas with both a hands-on approach and an abstract approach.  I am expecting to do most of my homework outside of class  I am willing to do at least 35 minutes of homework a day.  My grade 8 teacher recommended me for this course.

Grade 9 Academic (ELL) Science Course  Generally the same expectations as Academic  I need lots of help with learning vocabulary or conveying my thoughts on paper  I am still in ESL Level 1 to 3  My grade 8 teacher recommended me for this course.

Basic Grade 9 Science Course Outline Units of Study  Unit 1 – Ecology – the study of ecosystems interactions  Unit 2 – Chemistry – the study of chemical reactions  Unit 3 – Physics – the study of electricity and its characteristics  Unit 4 – Space – the study of the universe

Other Course Basics Applied, Academic and ELL courses are combinations of:  Class lessons/notes  Labs and activities  Quizzes and tests  Homework and assignments  A final written exam and lab exam in the final week of the course

Science Department Policies Things you should know… 

Test and Quizzes:     



All major tests are announced 1 week in advance. There are no “re-takes” or “make-up” tests or quizzes If your are sick, please call in before 8:30 am on the day of the absence. Students always write a missed quiz or test on their first day back. Skipping will result in a mark of “ZERO”

Assignments:  All major assignments are announced several weeks in advance.  Speak with your science teacher if other arrangements must be made.  Plagiarized or copied assignments will result in a mark of “ZERO”

Science Department Policies 

Missed Work:  Students are responsible for work missed due to an absence.  Please contact a learning partner to find out what was missed.



Extra Help:  Always available, ask your teacher to arrange for a time.
